When to re-plumb pool?

My pool is about 40 years old and I believe still has its original plumbing. Every year, without fail, there is a leak which needs to be repaired at significant cost. Luckily for me, the leaks have been pretty close to the pump and have never required pulling up our patio. My question is at what point does it make sense to re-plumb the entire pool? We are considering expanding our patio and I certainly don't want to put money into that project if it will need to be torn up a couple of years later. Is it typical for leaks to occur near the pump or have I just been lucky?

I don't think it ever makes sense to re-plumb a pool unless you need to replace it for other reasons such as replacing equipment. But exactly what is failing in the plumbing?
