SLAMming and CYA question. Still seeing green after Day 3! Please Help!

Two years ago, I had a horrible time getting cloudy debris out of my pool. I finally vacuumed to waste several times. That solved the problem. I don't know why my sand filter was so inefficient.
Since then, I vacuum with a robot or a battery powered hand held vac (PoolBlaster Max). These are independent of my filter.
