    Organic vs Inorganic Combined Chlorine

Hi, I work at an indoor resort. We have several pools, spas, and waterslides. We occasionally have issues with high combined chlorine. Sometimes, when we treat the combined chlorine, we see no change at all. We utilize multiple methods to treat combined chlorine (oxy-shock, breakpoint, etc)...

    Combined chlorine

Howdy all. I am using an Australian liquid test from Clear Choice Labs. Very good product although pH can be tricky to read with the colours. The FC and CC is measured in 0.5ppm increments. I find I always have 0.5ppm CC. Is this acceptable?

Planning to use a pool cover most of the time. Considering a UV system

Hey TFP! We're in the early planning phase of a new concrete pool. We live in a warm climate, and want to warm up the pool year round using a heat pump. To reduce our costs and carbon footprint, I'm hoping to use a pool cover when the pool is not in use. This means very little of the sun's...

CYA Remains Unchanged and Salt Increases

I am trying to figure out a couple of things. I have added 70 ounces of CYA over the past 2 weeks, and it only raised by 10ppm. Over that same period, my salt reading has gone up by 400ppm without adding any Salt. I have tested these numbers several times in the same sample to confirm. EDIT: I...

Wood Hot Tub success with dichlor and UV

I wanted to share a success story after purchasing a larch wood-fired hot tub and finally finding a way to maintain the water successfully! When I originally planned to buy the tub, I received a lot of advice warning me that wood hot tubs are notoriously difficult to maintain because wood is a...

Indoor, in ground pool high combined chlorine

Hello everyone, I just purchased a new home. It has a 17,000 gallon indoor, inground, geothermal heated pool. It’s 14 years old, original vinyl liner and all original pool equipment. It wasn’t used much by the previous owners, but was maintained by the local pool company who built it when new...

Can't get CC below 0.5 ppm

I've SLAMmed it several times, and the best I can do is 0.8. If I don't SLAM on the reg, it will be between 1 and 2. I figure I must be doing something wrong for my setup. Here are the factors that I think are influencing my process: My < 1 year old tub came with an ozonator It's under a tree...

How to test for Combined Chlorine when Free Chlorine is high

My CC tested 0.6 on a FAS-DPD test using a 25mL sample. If I understand correctly, the recommended approach to reducing CC when greater than 0.5 is to shock to 12ppm FC. I'm not sure if this is technically SLAM, but assuming I need to maintain 12ppm FC (or whatever the CYA/FC table specifies)...

    Combined Chlorine

I’ve read so much on this, and know that I should take the pool stores guidance with a grain of salt. Typically, it is to buy product. I even went to second store and was surprised they brushed me off when I was concerned about .5ppm CC. I have a salt pool, above ground, fiberglass, about...

    So what causes combined chlorine

So I know it’s the breakdown of matter but we usually have no cc with my chlorine test even when using the pool, well the New Jersey weather hasn’t been good so we haven’t been in the pool since last Sunday and the last 2 days I have had .5 ( well took 1 drop to get back to clear so I suppose...

    Combined Chlorine- grrr!!!

Hello. I am a new pool owner that’s ready to fill it all in with concrete because despite the awesome knowledge I’ve gained from this site, I’m at my wits end. Pool is chlorine with a UV light filter, cartridge filter, ozonater, and gas heater. Water sits at about 84 degrees. Pool has a vinyl...

SLAMming with no CC, FC drops

I’ve begun the slamming process and I just want to make sure I’m not crazy. I know zero CC is the ideal outcome so I ‘think’ I’m still on the right track. I added a bunch of chlorine last night, that brought FC from 0 to 8 this morning. Added more, FC went to 12 (this was at 7:20am ET). Each...

Newbie advice needed- VERY high CC

Hello - I am new to pool care and I want to make sure the advice I was given is correct before adding 14 GALLONS of liquid Cl. Last night I followed the SLAM chart and added 3 gal of liquid. Today I took a sample to Leslies because i thought I was using my new Taylor K-2006 kit wrong when I got...
