My only concern would be that these mats may not be suitable for outdoor use. What are they, some sort of foam rubber? Will they absorb water and get waterlogged?

I calculate 3.2 tons (at 100lb/cu ft). Extending the radius out a little around the pool I'd say your 3.8 number is pretty accurate.

What's under the artificial turf?

The heat pump will not heat your pool if ambient is below 60F or so. If you are looking to extend the season in that way a HP won't do it. In Mich, I'd go propane. Much easier to heat to the temp you like, and much quicker. You can turn it off and on as needed. Can't really do that with the HP...

I would think that an irrigation system location and redesign/rerouting should be included in your pool install contract. Ours was.
