I think smykoski has it right. You tend to take deep breaths and hold it when swimming. It's common the first couple times swimming of the year to have sore diaphragm muscles. It shouldn't persist all season long though.

Yes, that "slimy" feeling is normal with soft water. Just use less soap. Hair should feel softer after washing even though it feels like the soap isn't washing off completely. Sorry, no idea on the ideal pH but I'm guessing its no different than a pool: 7.5

I would think you need to have new skin on the wound to consider it healed and water tight. No scab. No drainage.

Keep it dry until it heals and then after that if you want to minimize scarring then you really have to keep it out of the sun for 1 year. Even sun block won't provide 100% protection against permanent scarring. However, with a 3" incision, you are probably expecting to keep some level of scar...
