OCLT question re: very high chlorine

I’m down to 10 (20 drops) and it held from sunset to sun up. All I need to do now is balance the rest of the chemicals, including bringing my CYA higher and start the heater. By Wednesday of this coming week, we’ll be in the high 70’s. Good enough for me to swim. Plus, it’s my daughter’s...

OCLT question re: very high chlorine

True, not SLAMing. Silly, but actual, reason is that there was one gallon left in the case I bought.

OCLT question re: very high chlorine

Been slowly getting my pool ready for swimming. It’s looking pretty good but, it’s been too cold here to swim. I cleaned up the pool yesterday (vacuumed, brushed, . . .) and then I made a bit of a mistake. I dumped a gallon of LC in the pool. That brought the chlorine level to 17 when I did...

Well, Here We Go Again with the Algae

Can you post a link to that elbow? I’ve had the same problem as you and I’m out of ideas. Though, I have thought it’s a circulation issue. Wishing you luck figuring this out. I’ve just kinda learned to live with it. Brush a lot and keep chlorine at the high end of recommended based on CYA...

    Ongoing Nuisance Algae Problem

A little late, but just wanted to weigh in and let you know you’re not alone. I just closed my pool for the season, but I had a very similar experience. My pool is fiberglass so there really just is not many places for the algae to hide, but there it is, every so often throughout the season...

    Algae in 8ppm FC?

So I left the spot for another day and it did not change at all. Wouldn't it have grown if it was algae? Especially mustard algae?

    Algae in 8ppm FC?

I’m not too worried about it. Given the crack in the fiberglass, I’ll have to drain the water before too long. I’ll just keep it under control until then and then go over everything with a fine tune comb while the pool is empty. I’m thinking about something like spraying down the entire shell...

    Algae in 8ppm FC?

It has a tinge of green. Closer to a dark green/brown.

I’m just glad you’re not saying “Ooh, that looks like mustard algae.”

    Algae in 8ppm FC?

Just thought I’d throw a couple pictures here in case it helps identify what I’m dealing with. Obviously, its hard to get good pictures. The interesting thing is that this batch appeared the morning after the storm and has not changed since. If it were algae, wouldn’t it have grown? I...

    Algae in 8ppm FC?

I’m wondering the same. If so, I should pass OCLT. We’ll see what happens tonight.

    Algae in 8ppm FC?

Well, that was short lived. It rained pretty heavily last night and I woke up to what I think is algae in the same spot as before. Given the lateness of the season and the fact that I’ll probably be draining my pool soon (see below), I’m pretty much just going to live with it. I’ll do another...

    Algae in 8ppm FC?

Good morning. As hoped and kind of suspected, I passed the OCLT this morning. This has been an interesting experience. I’m still bewildered that this happened, but I have nothing else to work with except the hypothesis that my circulation may not be good in certain areas of the pool and/or...

    Algae in 8ppm FC?

Just a quick update. Been SLAM'in. Failed the OCLT last night. Feeling optimistic going into tonight's OCLT. There was no visible algae today and chlorine usage seemed less - even though it was sunny today. We'll see what morning (pre-dawn of course) brings. Note to future SLAM'ers - count...

    Algae in 8ppm FC?

One question about the SLAM and the OCLT. Is the OCLT accurate at that level of chlorine? If I'm at 24+ at sunset, aren't I going to lose some of that just because it's to high of a concentration? Said another way, if I'm at all over the recommended SLAM level, the CYA is at capacity plus...

    Algae in 8ppm FC?

In thinking this through, I agree with your analysis. I've been running my pump 24/7 at a low speed. I've also had my SWG on a low setting, which seemed to work fine (but obviously did not). However, I'm thinking in the future, I'll probably set my pump to run at a higher speed for a few...

    Algae in 8ppm FC?

Mostly using the SWG. Wouldn’t call it maintaining SLAM level because at my CYA, I should be around 24. But, the SWG has been keeping me in double digits as I puttz around with this. I use LC when I get serious, and shut the SWG down.

    Algae in 8ppm FC?

Well, today was frustrating. Yesterday I took the filter housing apart and the filter was pretty dirty, but I didn't think it was algae. Maybe dead algae but nothing green. Sprayed off the filter and it looked pretty good. I also looked at the weir door. Got down in the skimmer with a...

    Algae in 8ppm FC?

I believe I’ve done all of the above, but after I clean the filter and check the weir door today I will start again, making sure that all of the above are in place. I have no main drain. Thanks.

    Algae in 8ppm FC?

Well, I guess I have more work to do. I did not pass OCLT. Lost 3ppm (18 to 15) last night. I’ll get at scrubbing the weir door and I’m going to open up the filter housing today and clean the cartridge and see if anything is going on in there. Not sure if I see much point in trying to...

    Algae in 8ppm FC?

I guess I can just assume it’s nasty and scrub the heck out of it without taking it off to confirm anything.

    Algae in 8ppm FC?

The spot will disintegrate if I get near it. It’s not “stuck” on the pool. I can barely get the brush on it and it just disappears.

    Algae in 8ppm FC?

The first picture shows a light and an outlet. The second shows the skimmer and there’s a light below that. I don’t know how to remove it, but the skimmer has what appears to be a frame around it. Maybe behind that? The lights? I know nothing about them to speculate whether they could be...

    Algae in 8ppm FC?

I’ll check the back of the weir door. It’s obviously hard to view. Is there a way to remove it so I can better inspect the back of it? Otherwise I’ll try a mirror. The pool, being fiberglass only has three things that break the seal of the shell. The outlet jets, the lights and the...

    Algae in 8ppm FC?

I have laminars (water features), but I haven’t used them much this year and not recently. No ladder, no auto fill except that storm last night :) ), just the weir door and the lights and I don’t know how the lights are set in there. Here‘s my one thought. About a week ago, DD had some kids...

    Algae in 8ppm FC?

Clarification, my pool is fiberglass. As for the lights, they are small LED’s. I‘ve never removed them but I would think they are sealed. I can take a picture if necessary.

    Algae in 8ppm FC?

SLAM update: I was disappointed to see the above blob after I SLAM’ed yesterday. Yesterday, I kept the chlorine level above 20 all day. It seemed hard to get to my target of 25 but it was a very hot sunny day. Toward evening, I got frustrated and dumped in a gal of chlorine. That was around...

    Algae in 8ppm FC?

I’m not sure if these add anything but I tried to take some pictures this morning. Is so hard to get a picture of something underwater. The first picture is a close up. The second pictures shows the blob from eye level. It’s about the size of a dollar bill. I’ll post my observations in...

    Algae in 8ppm FC?

I put the SWG on 100% last night and this morning there doesn’t appear to be any algae. Maybe it’s because the sun hasn’t hit the pool yet? So, no picture to be had. Anyway, the chlorine is at 15 and I’m going to start my SLAM. I shut off the SWG and will turn the pump up to 75% and give it...
