I need to help my boss with Black Algae!

UPDATE: My boss told me they bought "unstabilized" granular shock and used that to shock her pool, and rented a scuba tank and went in and scrubbed the black spots with a chlorine tablet. They won't switch from using the chlorine tabs, so I guess she will handle things on her own now!

I need to help my boss with Black Algae!

I agree Dave! I tried that first. Now I am looking for you guys to spell it out, so I can print out this thread and say "there's your answer". They think I'm crazy to pour "laundry bleach" into my pool!

I need to help my boss with Black Algae!

My boss has a gunite in-ground pool with spots of Black Algae appearing in the pool. She uses either Tri-Chlor or Di-Chlor tablets exclusively for chlorination. I tested her water for her (I have the good Taylor kit), and here were her numbers: FC zero CYA well over 100 (100 is the highest my...

    Stinking Mustard Algae!

I'm the OP for this thread. I've come to the conclusion that what I have been seeing is either 1) dead algae after I have shocked, or 2) undissolved Cal-hypo, or 3) Something precipitating out of the water when I use Cal-Hypo. My belief is that it is dead algae. I haven't had any problems...

    Stinking Mustard Algae!

And now it's back!!! I did let my FC level drop below 5 a couple of times this week, so I bought some Cal Hypo (Calcium level is fine, and it's easier than hauling a bunch of bleach) and shocked the pool. Guess what, the stuff started coming back the next morning! So now I'm thinking...

    Stinking Mustard Algae!

OK, it's been a few more days. I've let me chlorine level drift back down. For the last 2 days, I have not added chlorine and I have not brushed. I've even turned the pump back down to low, it's been on high for the last 7 days. Guess what? The stuff is gone. My conclusion? I have no idea...

    Stinking Mustard Algae!

Last night and this morning, I'd say the "stuff" is down another 25%. There is still some there, but it's much less.\ I'm getting what you all are saying, that we might just be fooled into thinking the chlorine is doing something, when it was just dirt or pollen the whole time. I should be...

    Stinking Mustard Algae!

Thanks Richard. I've pretty much decided that I need to so this anyway. If it was just a little now and then, it would be no big deal, but the one dog drinks alot of pool water when allowed to. Sometimes I think she lets herself go thirsty when in the pen, just so she can "fill up" when she...

    Stinking Mustard Algae!

You are right, and I've come to the realization that I need to do something about the dogs drinking the water. Actually, it's only one of the two, who will actually lay at the steps and just drink and drink. The other one is too afraid of falling in. They stay in a large penned enclosure for...

    Stinking Mustard Algae!

The first couple of days, it would drop from 25 the night before, to 22 the next morning. After that, I didn't retest in the morning, because I was running low on FAS-DPD reagents. Right now, I'm just guessing and adding chlorine in the pool to keep it high, trying to keep it around 25, but I...

    Stinking Mustard Algae!

I don't want to jinx myself...but when I got home this afternoon, I saw about 50% of the amount that was in the pool yesterday, so maybe I'm winning this battle. I don't know if this made a difference, but for a while, I was brushing the whole pool, and then going back and adding the chlorine...

    Stinking Mustard Algae!

OK, it appears that I have IT! I have kept my FC level at 25 or above for the last 3 days, my CYA is 50. I am brushing like a mad woman. I add more chlorine (using bleach and cal hypo) 3 times a day. Someone, remind me AGAIN why I should not use that copper stuff in my pool. If it's...
