    Combined Chlorine and Algae

There is nothing you need to do about the CCs, they are just part of the cycle. FC gets used up and turned into CC, then the CC's are burned off by the sun. Unless you have an indoor pool or a cover, just let the sun do its job. Thats bad advice from the pool store. Speaking of bad advice...

    Slam and silt

Its likely dead algae. Keep at the SLAM, including brushing, running the robot and backwashing when needed. Once crystal clear, do the OCLT and CC tests to see if you pass those. It sounds like the end is in sight, but you likely have a few more days.

    SLAM question

Good job testing and replenishing FC multiple times a day. Just a couple of points: With a CYA of 30, your SLAM level is 12 not 10 I wouldn't mess with the CC or any other test besides FC until your pool is crystal clear Make sure you are running the pump 24/7 and brushing daily since algae...

    Need to SLAM but..

+1 on Newdudes advice. We have plenty of options around us and no reason ever to go into the pool store ever again.

SLAM timeframe while passing OCLT & 0 CC?

I hate posts like these, but please keep at it. The one thing I haven't seen you mention are the main drains. Sometimes those can get algae in them under the cover. Are the drains fully open at the equipment pad to maximize circulation there? Ideally you could dive in and remove the cover to...

SLAM timeframe while passing OCLT & 0 CC?

I would keep it at SLAM level and keep hunting for the algae. Have you scrubbed weir doors, behind lights, etc? I've seen many people in your position and the algae will keep coming back until they find it, scrub it to remove its protective film, and let it be killed by chlorine. Some of my...

Organic Staining--what else can I do?

When you cleared the green pool, did you follow the SLAM process and use only Chlorine? No algaecides, blue products or other pool store magic potions? In the meantime, read up on stains in the pool. Note the process to test for Organic stains by placing a puck on the stain for a few minutes...

HUGE Algae problem - startup help

While I dont love the use of clarifier since it will gum up the filter, are you saying you were on vacation and completed a SLAM of the pool at the house you were renting? If so that is a first I've seen on here so kudos to you. Did you know the owners or did they give you any sort of break on...

SLAM timeframe while passing OCLT & 0 CC?

So you are passsing 2 out of the 3 criteria to end the SLAM, but since you are visually seeing evidence of algae you don't pass all 3 criteria. See my post #2 about hidden algae as I suspect that is your issue. Likely still have algae hidden in some random spot that isn't enough to see on...

SLAM timeframe while passing OCLT & 0 CC?

There is no set timeline for a SLAM. When the algae quickly comes back after passing the SLAM exit criteria typically means there is hidden algae somewhere. Typical hiding spots are: - Stairs - Ladders - Weir Doors - Behind lights - Auto fill valves - Water features Have you thoroughly...

Newbie to the SWG world now have yellow algae present and getting worse

Nope. Keep in mind the first step in the SLAM is to lower your pH to 7.2. That is because your pH test will show false high readings when chlorine is at SLAM. Follow the process.

Newbie to the SWG world now have yellow algae present and getting worse

+1 on not using any more of the algaecide. Usually, when we see people's chemicals registering higher than expected, it is due to their pool volume being smaller than they think. The good news is that is an easy fix. There are several online pool size estimators that you can plug in your...

    Black algae removal

I would hold off on the wire brush for now. Just based on those pictures, it almost looks like you have brushed off all of the plaster. I would read up on Black Algae in pool school, especially the part identifying it as black algae including the part I marked in red: However, there are a...

Well, here goes my first SLAM!

Dang. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but there is no way that pool will clear up until at least next year. 😈 PS - Good luck, sounds like you are on the right track.

Green water after baking soda and Shock

Hi Bruno - Those look like hard water spots. Do you notice any iron staining on the porcelain, usually where the water comes out of the faucet into the bowl of a sink or toilet and will look yellow or rusy over time? The below picture is a bit extreme, but something like this:

Green water after baking soda and Shock

Green is either caused by algae or iron, so I would think step 1 would be identifying why your pool is green. For algae, we typically would recommend you do an OCLT to test and see how much chlorine you are losing overnight. That will be tricky without a test kit, but do you know your...

    Clearing pool of algae

Welcome, just a couple of questions: What test kit did you order? How do they normally vacuum? How do they normally chlorinate? While you are waiting on your test kit, are you adding chlorine daily? If not, you should add 5ppm of chlorine on a daily basis to keep the algae in check. If you...

Clear Green Pool Algae or Iron

Did you pass the OCLT and CC tests as well? Mind posting your most recent test results and telling us your post SLAM plan for chlorine? Hopefully we can make sure this is your final SLAM ever.

    Keep Getting Algae

My doctor said our chronic health problems had nothing to do with high chlorine. I even think my high chlorine helped clear up the 11th toe that was starting to grow on my son's foot. :laughblue: Seriously though, SLAM and make sure and kill all of the algae then run your FC higher than...

    Keep Getting Algae

I like to keep things simple. While I cannot explain why you are getting algae, we all know algae is caused by low chlorine. It could be a circulation thing, testing error, bird poop, environment, aliens, etc. The simple solution is to bump up your chlorine. 6 isn't working so try...

algae help. can't seem to make progress

24 days is a frustrating time for a SLAM. Lets take a step back and re-look at some of the basics: 1. How confident are you in your CYA number? If that is off it could also mean that your SLAM target is off as well which can prolongue a SLAM. 2. Have you checked for hidden algae in stairs...

    Algae with Chlorine Lock

I love how their 1st suggestion is to sell you something to get rid of the metal in your pool. Removing metal will have zero impact on your algae issue, and did they happen to tell you how you ended up with metal in your pool? I'll give you a hint, its something they sold you, likely...

Been weeks and I still can’t clear it up HELP!

+1 on the SLAM and below are the details. To begin, do you have your own test kit that generated those numbers? If not, you will need one. Also if your CYA is 70, your SLAM FC target is 28. Good job on raising the chlorine higher than most do, but as you can see it is not quite high enough...

    Not algae but HELP

+1 on upping the chlorine. You always round up CYA and the Target range for a CYA of 60 is 7-9 but don't be afraid to go higher since you know you have lots of stuff in your pool to deal with. Run your filter 24/7 and the DE is not a bad idea either, just keep an eye on your pressure gauge.
  26. JJ_Tex

Help, my pool is green :(

Since you have some wiggle room in your CYA, you can use a combination of pucks and liquid chlorine. Now that you have a good test kit and know the impacts of pucks to your CYA, you shouldn't be afraid to use them especially since they are convenient. Its the folks who blindly use pucks who...

Help: algae bloom I can't control

Ok, but for the record your low FC is giving me an ulcer. FC of 4-5 is below the target range for CYA of 40. Once you get to CYA of 50-60 that will be too low of FC and you will likely get algae at those levels. Make sure you are following the FC/CYA chart and keeping your FC at the...

    fc target level

No harm at all as long as you keep it under the SLAM level for your CYA. As you can see from my avatar, I like keeping my chlorine on the high side and no ill effects to equipment, people, swimsuits, etc. to date.

    Flock waste

Ok, just make sure you are always staying in the target FC range or even a bit higher to avoid allowing another algae outbreak. I made a chart to help me keep all of the ranges straight and help me stay far away from the minimum FC level. Its pasted below if helpful. Also on the comment on...

Like most shortcuts in life, there are downfalls. Obviously, you didn't pass the 3 criteria to end the SLAM with cloudy water. Did you pass the OCLT?
