A question about using Sodium Carbonate and Disodium Metasilicate and effects on pH

Actually I don't use muriatic...I use granular BioGuard Lo n Slo. You guys might convince me...that's true...but I have a really hard time thinking about actually dumping bleach into the pool! I was at a hotel one time when I saw the owner come out and do that and was quite horrified really...

A question about using Sodium Carbonate and Disodium Metasilicate and effects on pH

Jason...LOL...no problem! I should have mentioned that this whole thing is associated with trying to forge on with baquacil. I appreciate your input!! Matt....thanks as well. Yeah...you pretty well nailed it. With all due respect, I'm not convinced of being on the "losing end" of the baqua...

How long does replastering generally result in higher pH levels?

Not a chance...those tablets are what I am choosing to try in place of the discontinued chemical called "Assist".

How long does replastering generally result in higher pH levels?

Just wondering....I had the pool replastered summer of 2014, and so I expected it during the remainder of that season and the next, but the continued increase in pH this season actually seems to be worse than last year. That doesn't make any sense to me. Any reason for it? I'm getting tired of...

A question about using Sodium Carbonate and Disodium Metasilicate and effects on pH

Hi, I recently started adding Aqua Finesse Pool Care tablets to my pool since they are supposed to help with eliminating biofilms, slime, water mold, etc. A concern I have is that both of the ingredients, sodium carbonate and disodium metasilicate, are basic and so will increase the pH. This is...

pH level keeps going up ever since having pool replastered

OK...except that I don't use bleach in my pool. Thanks so much though.

pH level keeps going up ever since having pool replastered

I thought 80-120 was the preferred range for TA? And anything over 200 for CH?

pH level keeps going up ever since having pool replastered

Thanks for replies. I might just try listing my unused / unneeded chemicals in the coffee bar! Here are my recent results as requested: pH - between 7.5 - 8+ TA - 110 - 120 CH - 210 - 220 No water features or aeration, no chlorine levels since I use biguanide

pH level keeps going up ever since having pool replastered

Hi, I expected this for the first season and over the winter following replastering, but this is the 3rd season and I still can't keep it down. I had checked it over the winter a few times before the pool froze and added acid several times, but some time between the freeze and spring start up...

Just ordered aqua finesse water care tablets...hope this helps with the slime/mold

I think this is the last ditch effort to be able to continue with baquacil and hopefully control the pink slime and white water mold issues. I've read good things about these aqua finesse tablets. From the research, it does appear that biofilm issues are not only associated with baquacil, but...

TA and CH readings are very low...should I adjust?

I took off part of the cover - as I usually do when checking the water and adding any chemicals during the off-season. It turned out I was way off. The true readings are: pH - 8+ (guessing around 8.2 or 8.3) TA - 130 CH - 230 So I'm a bit in the scaling zone...added some pH decreaser...

TA and CH readings are very low...should I adjust?

I would not plan on running the pump being that the entire system is drained and antifreeze in the lines. I just use a kayak paddle (lol) and agitate the water for several minutes...probably still not a great sample but good enough I suppose. - - - Updated - - - Yeah...I'm not content with...

TA and CH readings are very low...should I adjust?

Hi, I have not checked readings since November. We're just at the point here in PA where the water is starting to freeze over on the surface. Last year, with the new plaster, I was worried about scale and so several times had to lower the pH. Now, however, I seem to be looking at the opposite...

Newbie trying to balance pool chemicals prior to winter closing

Back when I was using chlorine, my pool store would always sell me a special "winter shock", and would always have me adjust the TA, CH, etc. I think it was overkill and a bit unnecessary. The explanation on their water test sheets would always talk about how winter balancing needs to be...

For anyone who does use Baq....do you use a sand or DE filter? Time for chlorine?

Thanks to all for the kind and helpful replies and suggestions! I really appreciate it. Actually, the water is absolutely beautiful...crystal clear ever since I have used my next to last dose of SoftSwim Assist (too bad they discontinued it) and have been doing a better job of monitoring the...

    New Guy Here

I might mention that you want to not rely too much on pool store advice. You can do your own testing and probably avoid adding alot of stuff that the pool store would tell you to based on the results of their testing. I do believe that pool store test results are skewed towards whatever levels...

    PH keeps increasing...

I might add that it can take even longer than a year for the new plaster. My pH is still going up and it is now just about 14 months since it was replastered. Unless my increase is now due to some other reason. Being that noone else mentioned this yet - I might suggest to continue monitoring the...

Why is my CH level gradually increasing?

Thanks for the reply. My fill water appears to have virtually no CH based on my test kit results. Since we have a water softener, that would seem to make sense. So adding a few hundred gallons should most definitely lower the CH a bit!

Why is my CH level gradually increasing?

Hi, I had replastering and fresh fill done last summer. Up until just the past few weeks, my CH level fluctuated within a range of 160-180, but since July 16 to the present, it has jumped up to 250 (210 on 8/10, 230 on 8/20, and now 250 today). I know these readings are all still within...

For anyone who does use Baq....do you use a sand or DE filter? Time for chlorine?

Hi JoyfulNoise, Thanks so much for your encouragement! I really appreciate that. So far I have not heard back from the guy at the company that sells the AquaFinesse product. I had talked to him at length about a week ago but haven't heard back since. Not sure if that's a good sign or not!! I...

For anyone who does use Baq....do you use a sand or DE filter? Time for chlorine?

Thanks for the suggestions! I think I am going to try a product called Aqua Finesse (pucks). I'm a bit leery of the disodium metasilicates that are in the product but there are testimonials that it does help greatly with the biofilm issues. And...am seriously considering the switch back to...

For anyone who does use Baq....do you use a sand or DE filter? Time for chlorine?

Hi, My water is not in good shape right now. When I brushed it today all these mold particles came up and are floating around. Pretty disgusting. The walls feel all slimey (or at least did before I brushed). So a question that arises is - should I go to a sand filter? IF I stay with Biguanide...

Having trouble with constant pH increase and cloudy water

Hi and thanks for the reply! No...I have no waterfall, fountain, etc. Since I submitted this thread I noticed the water problem is much more severe than just high pH. When I brushed the pool this afternoon, all these particles of mold came up from the bottom and now the water is REALLY cloudy...

Having trouble with constant pH increase and cloudy water

Hi, My plaster was redone last year, so I would not think the new plaster is still causing the pH to keep going up. It seems like when I knock it back down the water clears up for a time, but then gets cloudy again as the pH raises, although this is just a generalization on my part and...

My TA is 100...do I need to adjust it higher?

Hi, Just had a test at my pool store for a few reasons but mostly just to see how mine matches up with my Taylor kit. I came out to 100, they got 92. Anyway, they want me to add 11 lbs of TA increaser, with their recommended range being 125-150. Isn't that a bit higher than needed? I thought...

Never had this much trouble trying to get the water to clear after opening

I'll check oxidizer again but it should be fine. No reason to think metals are in there but I figured it's worth a shot, so I added some. Color does seem to be improving even more but very slowly. Betcha it'll be nice and blue by the time the pool is ready to close in October...lol

Never had this much trouble trying to get the water to clear after opening

I've tried everything. The oxidizer and sanitizer levels are both really good. I backwashed and cleaned the filter. As I mentioned, there was lots of green stuff in there, but now that it's cleaned out and new DE the problem remains. There is SLIGHT improvement...more of a bluish/green, but it's...

Never had this much trouble trying to get the water to clear after opening

I didn't realize this. What gets really wild with the cruise ship pools is when there is significant wave height and the water is sloshing from one side of the pool to the other! I do not care for crowded pools, and so the best time to get in to a cruise ship pool is right when people are...

Never had this much trouble trying to get the water to clear after opening

I'm totally p-off at this point to be honest. I really don't know what to do. The worst part is the huge and ugly area of foam that collects right at the return lines...and there is yellow stuff mixed in with the foam. I think I really might need professional help with this.

Never had this much trouble trying to get the water to clear after opening

Understood...really. I'm sorry...I really went on the aggressive there a bit. My only experience with saltwater pools is on cruise ships....liked it actually..great for floating! I KNEW you'd mention about "improperly maintained chlorine" though!! I could feel it coming. Actually right now...
