Yeah ok, uncle, you guys know it all

    a Q about phospates

For years phosphates were added to water plants to help protect copper pipes, so there must be some truth there somewhere.

    a Q about phospates

I’ll just add that there are studies that show phosphates can coat the plates on swcg and limit their ability to produce chlorine. Most manufacturers will not replace “faulty” cells until phosphates are ruled out.

What's the reasoning behind a higher CYA level recommendation from TFP?

Just an FYI, Richard didn’t figure out this ratio, it was Ben Powell from the old Pool Forum. I believe Richard took the industry to task regarding their poor understanding of CYA. We used to use 7-11-40 with 11% being your target level. That got bumped down to 7.5%. Certainly a far cry from the...

Cloudy water, but none of the usual suspects?

Cloudy says it’s not passing OCLT. Slam will get it sparkly clear.

    PH meter is wonky?

Ph meters are great….for two days after you open the box, then not so much. Drop tests are easier.

    Underwater liner fade

Vegetable dyes vs mineral dyes. I believe the vegetable dyes fade quicker. Make sure your chemistry is balanced at all times, and yes that means hardness. Calcium is used in the manufacturing process. Over time, no liner will ever look as good as it did the day it was installed.

    Recurring Metal Problems

Without a doubt it’s metals. If you can source pro team metal magic then you need to do a weekly dosing Once you’ve chased those metals back into suspension. Members have also had good results using poly fill in their skimmers to capture some metals. There isn’t a pool out there without trace...

    SWG issues?

Just an FYI, Hayward is insisting the phosphates can and do leave a biofilm on the blades of their Aquarites, limiting chlorine production. Part of that makes sense to me (years ago phosphates were added to city to limit corrosion from acidic water) and the other part screams warranty claims...

Cloudy Water, Day 7 of Slam

If you don’t follow slam procedures you can play rope a dope with algae all summer long. Those dips below 40% of your cya reading simply give the algae a breather.

    Going back to salt

I have tried with cya of 80 and cya of zero. Difference is at 80 my % is at 10, at 0 it had to be 50-70%. Remember every cell makes a set amount of chlorine in its lifetime, you can chose to use it all in one year or use it over 4-7.

    Pool Rx - should I add ......?

I constantly have chemical suppliers offering me products to sell that will enhance salt water pools and also enhance my profit margins. Run away, none of it’s needed.

    Cooler weather, more chlorine consumption?

It’s all contributing to requiring more chlorine to break it down. Yes increase output as required.

    Cooler weather, more chlorine consumption?

Those leaves are creating a chlorine demand.

    Sequesterants....

City water supplies are the culprit a lot of times. Manganese is common during drought conditions I’m told.

    Phosphate levels

A lot of stores are using LaMottes spin disk system, the disks are preloaded with reagents that are then filled from a syringe. These disks are spun for a set time frame and then light is shine through them and the colours are compared to set parameters. A colorimeter. The store can then program...

Any way to quickly reduce chlorine level?

Sodium thiosulfate, or sodium sulfite will reduce your chlorine levels ASAP. Simply follow the directions for dosing.

    Vinyl IG closing LC

    First test, closing this weekend

Yes it’s fine to close it now. Circulate a quart or even two of poly quart 60 a day or two before. In the spring the rain water or snow will have diluted your cya but you need to know what it is then and decide of you want to do a partial drain refill to get it back to 30 if you are going to...

How do they kill algea in commerical pools

Common in my parts for non chlorine shock to be used once any cloudy or dullness is apparent. It allows them to open sooner.

    Mad about phosphates!

I suspected the article was more fake news, god forbid journalists do proper research...but....we all know that the cya ratio got debunked eventually by Ben Powell.

    Mad about phosphates!

Don’t shoot the messenger, aqua magazine had a big write up on it two years ago I believe. Hayward now will balk on warranty replacement if phosphates are not lower than 500 ppb. I personally see no reason not to use it, it lowers chlorine demand that can prove excellent should a pool drop...
