can't get rid of cloudy water

What sort of debris? If you have the ability, it might make sense to vacuum to waste, while you let the FC come down. Over 10FC ppm, pH readings are not reliable. Let it come down below 10 and retest pH and TA (and CYA for that matter). My thought is to get those in range and as much of the...

can't get rid of cloudy water

The Chlorine level needs to come down below 10 ppm to test pH. pH imbalance and total alkalinity may cause cloudy water.

First time opening pool with sand filter

Only time you really have to change the sand is if you are converting from Baquacil or regularly use a flocculant. "Dirty" sand is actually more efficient.

Does this look right ? Pool closed. Cover question

I have something that looks like this. Actually, exactly like this. It pumps 350 gal/hour. You can get it off Amazon for about $30-40 or at your local pool store (Didn't see one on TfTestkits, otherwise I'd link it.). I got mine at Leslie's before I found TFP. Don't think I've been there more...

Does this look right ? Pool closed. Cover question

That looks like a solid cover. It also looks like a circular pool. 15 x 42 would be far more of an oval shape. As a solid cover, it is doing it's job. As mentioned above, consider scooping out the leaves and pumping the water. Water is heavy and you don't want the walls collapsing in on itself.

Double check my closing procedure (main drain)

In 14 years since I've owned a pool of my own and for the 15 or so years that I helped my Dad close his inground pool, I've never seen bubbles come from the main drain, using a 6.5 HP Shopvac. On the other hand, the pools that I've cared all have at least an 8 1/2 foot deep end and hold (held)...

Is it ever going to filter clean?!

If you've passed the OCLT and CC<=0.5, maybe reduce your filter run time to allow whatever is making the water cloudy to fall to the floor and be vacuumed slowly. Perhaps the motion of the water is keep the filter from catching whatever is suspended. I don't want to suggest flocculent because...

    2018 Bleach Prices

Assuming a 121 oz. jug, it works out to $0.24. Not bad. There are some better deals, but certainly worse as well.

Picked up the Suncast model because it matches my patio furniture. Hopefully it works as well as the Keter, which was right next to it.

    2018 Bleach Prices

I ended up doing it twice. There is a patio chest that I want to get for $99, which will now cost $69. I no longer have my shed right outside the gate, so I want a convenient place to store pool toys and vacuuming equipment.

    2018 Bleach Prices

I've never had a problem. It dilutes as soon as it hits the water and pouring in front of the return distributes it pretty decently. Plus, if you have a main drain, the Chlorine will get sucked into the filter and shot out the other returns. Their theory is probably because Liquid is not...

Looking for advice. For next year...

Is that photo from before last year's SLAM or is it current? Get first things done first, but I would certainly address that cover issue before you close this fall. This is a before/after of my pool the Spring immediately following my conversion to the TFP method. I did pretty much nothing to...

The 6 New England states, New York, New Jersey and I think two in Eastern PA. It's good for a few things, but sometimes what you pay is exactly what the item is worth. For instance, I bought a garden hose on the cheap. A week later I bought its replacement, which I still have, at Home Depot

Thanks for the info. Having the pool opened on May 8, but I want to add a gallon or two before the cover comes off for the season. New pool, new plumbing, plus heater. I left the buyer of our former home step-by-step instructions on how to open and close. I wasn't so lucky. The former owner is...

    Cloudy Water Question

Without a gauge, it may have been hard to tell when to backwash. DE in a sand filter tends to raise the pressure quickly if you put in too much, thereby rendering the application moot. Good to hear you are back to seeing positive results.

The active ingredient in beach = Sodium Hypochlorite = Liquid chlorine. The only variables are strength, price, and volume. Regular Clorox is between 3-6%, Concentrated Clorox is 8.25%. Both can be found in 121 oz. "gallon" jugs. "Liquid chlorine" typically ranges in strength between 10% and...

day 10 from opening pool and still cloudy

I'm having a hard time with your FC and CC numbers. Is the CC number supposed to be TC (Total Chlorine)? If so, it is a sign that you still have organics in the water. How are you testing it? You need to have a good DIY kit (See my signature below). Also, if your CYA level is to be believed...

    Pool Slide Cover

I had my slide refurbished back in August and I am looking to protect my investment. While it's been pretty mild so far, Winters can get rough in New England. Incidentally, It was somewhat mild last year as well until January when we had record snowfalls. I'd rather not leave fate to the...

Water and leaves on winter cover/tarp

Quite honestly, I did it for two reasons: 1) I was buying a new cover every 3 or 4 years at $125 or so a piece (on top of replacing water bags every year) for an ill-fitting cover. 2) Safety. My son likes to follow me around when I'm working in the pool area. No matter the cost, the cover paid...

Water and leaves on winter cover/tarp

That's a solid pool cover. When you said tarp, I envisioned the light blue/gray general-purpose tarps available at a hardware store. It looks like you have one on the other side of your fence.

Blowing out main drain? Friendly debate

Some pool anti-freeze is blue. I've picked it up from time to time. Your liner maybe blue, but water is clear and there is enough contrast to make a distinction in color when you're adding it. Especially if you've already blown out the lines.

Water and leaves on winter cover/tarp

Living in Ontario, I am going to assume you have a genuine pool cover. When I had a solid cover, I liked to keep as little water and debris from accumulating in the cover in the Fall before it froze. Once the ice comes, there is very little that can be done until Spring. If you wait until Spring...

Just adding RV antifreeze vs Blowing main drain for winter.

In theory, antifreeze is sort of a redundancy. If all the lines are blown out and capped, there is nothing for the antifreeze to keep from freezing. However if there is a leaky cap, the antifreeze will, at worst, create a slush. When it comes to the main drain, if you detach the tank from the...

Just adding RV antifreeze vs Blowing main drain for winter.

My Dad has had an IG pool for near 30 years and I have owned mine for 8 seasons. Never once in over 35 closings have we been able to blow out the main drain. Even when the water is below the returns, I estimate about 14,000 gallons of water, and though we try, 14k gallons of water is an...
