CYA Testing - Back to the sun, but...

Hey thanks, HermanTX. Yeah. I do that. The method is listed in CYA Testing - Further Reading. It's just that I can see the dot still if my back is to the sun, but the tube is shifted to be in the sun... per a given line. Then shifting the tube back to the shade, the dot disappears. I...

CYA Testing - Back to the sun, but...

Good afternoon, Taylor K-2006C With my back to the sun and the tube waist high, should the tube be shaded by my body? Or...?

High CYA, Chlorine & Phenol Red

Well you had me right up into the distilled water thing. Distilled water has a pH of 7.0. You may be right. It would just be surprising, is all. I'll have to test that theory at some point. That's interesting news about Taylor's phenol red. I'll have to test that too. Thanks! I'll test...

High CYA, Chlorine & Phenol Red

Good afternoon, My question is... With a high CYA level, does the chlorine level effect phenol red in the usual way? In other words, should I be concerned about accuracy when testing for pH with a CYA level of 100 and FC of above 10? No need to read further unless you're wondering why the...

Failing Pump Motor and the SWG

Huh. I tried it for about 10 seconds and restarted. Tried it again and started counting in my head, but then thought I should use the stopwatch on my phone for better accuracy... but she wouldn't fire up again. Seems like she was on the brink and me killing the cooling fan didn't help. Of...

Failing Pump Motor and the SWG

Well... nothing like a little Hindenburg action amongst friends, eh? Yeah, I'm gonna' change out that motor ASAP. Thanks! Now if I were to test it by shutting down the pump manually, any idea how long I should expect the sensors to do their jobs, i.e. how long before I should restart the pump...

Failing Pump Motor and the SWG

Good afternoon, It appears the thermal overload on my motor is kicking in some afternoons. I have a motor on order, but I'm a bit concerned about the Ecomatic SWG cell. If the pump quits while the cell is on, is there potential for damage? The manual doesn't specifically mention a dead pump...

    Noisy 2" Check Valve

Energy is cheap in Oregon. And solar is my only heater. My priority is the most pool enjoyment possible. The primary benefit of a 2 speed pump up here is to keep things moving during freezes at a lower cost And... perhaps. Sure sounds like a royal PITA, though. For mine... I kind of wonder...

    Noisy 2" Check Valve

That's a really good question. No. All holes have been on the top. For some reason this never occurred to me. And they're laying right over the sandy comp roof. AND... when making repairs and such... my big, heavy body has no choice but to sit on the panels. I've often wondered if this...

    Noisy 2" Check Valve

I believe my warranty ran out at 12. Yeah, well thanks for nuthin'. Just kidding. Quite a bit to unpack there. I won't give you the flow rate through the individual tubes argument. That's relative. Just think of it as velocity. And everything is divided between the complete set of tubes...

    Noisy 2" Check Valve

And my single speed pump is rated at somewhere in the neighborhood of 50+. Given my background as the son of a well driller and pump installer, 50+ seems about what my hands are feeling from the total of the 2 main jets and the little one on the side of the Roman steps; at least when the filter...

    Noisy 2" Check Valve

Roger that Dirk & James. Thanks! My install is pretty straightforward. South facing on a 5/12 comp roof. And it was designed by the top wholesaler in the state... who had been at it almost 3 decades by that time... mostly in southern California. The panels are 16 years old. The past few...

    Noisy 2" Check Valve

:) I like the last sentence there, but... I guess the challenge wouldn't be immense. Would just have to run some conduit from the breaker panel by the pad... over to the solar corner... then into another outlet. And then buy another expensive cell housing... etc. I still like that last...

    Noisy 2" Check Valve

Good to know, thanks! And... regarding the SWG / solar reconfiguration... that's a big one. Everything we've been talking about so far pales in comparison. The 2 sets of plumbing / electrical are 20 feet apart. The pump, filter and SWG are on the side of the house in the middle. It was...

    Noisy 2" Check Valve

Except I forgot to mention I have a single speed pump. We use the pool quite a lot. So having plenty of force to keep the skimmer fed is not a bad electric bill tradeoff.

    Noisy 2" Check Valve

Thanks! I'll check that out asap.

    Noisy 2" Check Valve

Correct. Out of the top of the sand filter... then 90 down to the SWG cell housing which requires a 90 left and then a 90 after to go back downward into the check valve. Don't have pics of the rest at the moment. I'm busy setting up a bunch of showings for tomorrow. I'm a real estate agent...

Picture should be available again now. No air that I can detect, but definitely a bouncing check valve. And yeah... it's right after a 90

    Noisy 2" Check Valve

I had a feeling. Kind of hard to imagine someone could sell you a check valve that doesn't work at relatively low pressure and 50 GPM or so. But live and learn I suppose. Thanks!

    Noisy 2" Check Valve

Thanks, but that's what I did. Well... technically it goes filter, then out to the SWG, then check valve. There's no room between the filter and the SWG cell. But I wouldn't think it should matter... unless the SWG is causing some turbulence. I had some photo issues. Looks like that's been...

    Noisy 2" Check Valve

Good afternoon, Last season I bought and installed a 2" check valve with the goal of keeping the solar drain-down from upsetting the sand filter bed. I bought it at a local plumbing supply shop... not thinking that there may be specialized pool products better suited for the job. I fired up...

Salt Water Chlorine Generators - Combined Chlorine / Chloramines

Cool. Yeah, I've seen some guys have done that and the company sells a pigtail to run it right off the tub's control box. Now how about the head unit? Have you taken or do you plan to take... precautions regarding precipitation and such?

Salt Water Chlorine Generators - Combined Chlorine / Chloramines

Thanks! Yeah, I had read that post of yours. Very cool of you to share. And yeah... for 4 of us I would probably boost with some bleach ahead of time. Don't want the FC to drop below zero with all of our butts in there. And then either test when we're done or just add some more to be sure...

    FAS-DPD Keeps Returning to Pink

Thanks! I'll do that. However, this is a new kit. And only the pool has been tested for the last few months. Basically no CCs in it. The spa was just reopened last week and the problem resurfaced with this new kit. I just ran a test: Granted, the pool is 57F, but I left the beaker sit for...

    FAS-DPD Keeps Returning to Pink

Good question. I rarely check for CCs in the pool water unless I have good reason. There's almost never a trace in this outdoor, saltwater pool. But I'd still say I leave it out about the same. And I'm guessing my 15 seconds is generous. May be more like 5 before it goes from crystal clear...
