Adding DE to sand filter didn't increase pressure

I'm amazed at how well the DE worked. In just one day, the sparkle is back!

Adding DE to sand filter didn't increase pressure

Thanks, woodyp! So I think I either did a real bad job at reading the gauge, or it took a while to register. I added another cup and noticed it increase by about 0.5psi. I also noticed the return was lacking pressure and the pump wasn't pulling much water. I did a short backwash & rinse and...

Adding DE to sand filter didn't increase pressure

Hello, Thanks to TFP, I've had sparking water, at least up until this very hot summer. I got some fine green sediment a couple times, which got kicked up while vacuuming, and now I just can't get the water clear. I shocked and ran the pump for three days with little improvement. The water is...

Natural gas odor while heater is off - RayPak 156

I appreciate all of the replies! It was really helpful to know that this appliance should not purge. I finally got my gas guy to send someone to check everything. It turns out that one of the gastite fittings just needed to be a little tighter. It took over a minute to build a soap bubble. The...

Natural gas odor while heater is off - RayPak 156

Anywhere nearby the appliance but it seems stronger if I get right up to the area where the line enters it. The installer had the cover off and I watched as he soaped every connection inside and out. Of course at that time there was no odor for him to smell  -Rob

Natural gas odor while heater is off - RayPak 156

Thanks everyone for the great replies! The line is yellow gastite to cast iron, with brass couplings. There is no external regulator. Could the internal regulator occasionally discharge normally? It's definitely not a constant leak. Also I think it is more than a minute or two between...

Natural gas odor while heater is off - RayPak 156

Hello, First of all - huge thanks to TFP as this season has been literally trouble free (at least the pool was) :) We just installed a pool heater in the spring and it's wonderful! I have a question about the heater and am wondering if anyone else experiences this... Occasionally when the...

Can't keep the chlorine in - SLAMming in Canada!

Update time! I've had the TF-100 for almost two weeks now and things are going great. The water is still sparkling and the chlorine demand is predictable and reasonable :) PH is stable at 7.6 TA will be tested this weekend but was 85 with the rainbow & store tests CYA 50 FC is being kept...

    Newbie PH mistake

I had a nice PH of ~7.7 (with a Rainbow test kit, but TF100 is on the way) ...and then I accidentally left my pump running for 12+ hours with the return jet breaking the water. Now the PH is somewhere above 8. I've pointed the return downwards and am looking forward to the rain overnight &...

Can't keep the chlorine in - SLAMming in Canada!

The pool is an oval 12'x24'x48". The ladder is huge and heavy with full-size plastic steps. I definitely struggled to get it out by myself with all the water weighing it down. I really didn't see or feel anything dirty on it so I just left it out of the pool for 24+ hours while the SLAM was...

    Can't keep the chlorine in

Hi Jcgaz, If your pool is clear like mine but losing all chlorine in the day, you might just need to dedicate one whole day to the SLAM and keep on top of it. I couldn't believe that so much chlorine can be used up out of sight. The pool store just said the same thing every time, "shock it and...

Can't keep the chlorine in - SLAMming in Canada!

Thanks, fklash. I have a TF kit on the way, however complicated that was to get up here! Also will be visiting Canadian Tire for my next batch of the good stuff. Update on the pool - I think it's safe to say that the SLAM was a success! Many thanks to everyone here. I would have thought...

SLAM - the math AND the reality

I'm new to this but doesn't the FC drop from shock level to the normal max pretty quickly in the day? If so, you should probably err to the higher end and then test for the safe swimming level based on the minimum CYA.

no pump for a few days! how and what quantity of liq.bleach??

I've heard that throwing them away is so that you don't inadvertently increase your calcium hardness. To me, it feels like there must still be some chlorine in there.

no pump for a few days! how and what quantity of liq.bleach??

Hi Marc, You can use pool math to figure out how much bleach to add: http://www.troublefreepool.com/calc.html Enter your stabilizer (CYA) first and check the Suggested FC Levels to get your FC target. Are you disolving the granular in a bucket first? Try dumping only half of the bucket and...

Can't keep the chlorine in - SLAMming in Canada!

It was indeed a nice long swim! FC actually stuck around 8ppm. I put in 2ppm at evening and it held overnight. So now for the final leg - see if it will hold good today! -Rob

Can't keep the chlorine in - SLAMming in Canada!

So after 7 hours with peak UV index 6, we are at around 8ppm. If it holds on to 4 of those to evening, I'll be very happy. In hindsight, it might have been interesting to keep my test bucket overnight for an OCLT. Swim time! Thanks everyone! -Rob

Can't keep the chlorine in - SLAMming in Canada!

Kim, it's more clear than ever. Even the leaves I vacuumed up from the bottom have no green on them. Re. the kit, I have family on both sides of the border. Can't wait! Mike, I suppose using the more diluted samples, I read a 7ppm loss. It seems too bad to be true! I'm going to test the...

Can't keep the chlorine in - SLAMming in Canada!

1000ml pool : 2500ml distilled water (FC 0) The strips are tough to read up top. What should the 1:1 reading be given a 3 @ 1:2.5? Not bad, thanks!

Can't keep the chlorine in - SLAMming in Canada!

Good Morning! Here are the readings. I'm not sure how I feel about it but I guess that's test strips for ya... Last night: Diluted 1:1 = >10ppm (>20, which was above my target of 17 - maybe the final bleach hadn't mixed yet?) Diluted 1:2.5 = 5 This morning: Diluted 1:1 = 9 Diluted 1:2.5 = 3...

    Dirty filter chlorine demand?

    Thank you!

    Dirty filter chlorine demand?

Quick and maybe a paranoid question... Can a dirty sand filter cause a chlorine demand? I'm (hopefully) almost done SLAMming and I've been running my filter on recirculate just in case. Now I'm scared to turn the valve to filter, since I had clear water and high demand before - can the problem...

Can't keep the chlorine in - SLAMming in Canada!

Hottest/brightest 2 hours of the day: 0.89gal added ...and we just lost power! Too many pool pumps and A/Cs in the town?

Can't keep the chlorine in - SLAMming in Canada!

I will need to dilute to do the OCLT. Hey, it's something ;) and I'm already in, I need to continue. Brand new bleach - the 4.25% is the strongest generic at Walmart up here. It's equiv. $1.50 USD/gal, so I am not spending huge so far despite the low concentration. I haven't checked "Crappy...

Can't keep the chlorine in - SLAMming in Canada!

Thanks again! Ammonia test was for a fish tank. Pulled the stairs and mat, they are squeaky clean. No light housing to worry about either. So, invisible algae + sun can eat this much chlorine at CYA 55, leaving behind no CC? -Rob

Can't keep the chlorine in - SLAMming in Canada!

Hmmmm that would be a lot easier right! I might have over-thought the test strip range problem. I could easily get some jugs of distilled water for this.

Can't keep the chlorine in - SLAMming in Canada!

Thanks, Kim! This time, since it's over the weekend, I'm on it every 2hrs in the day ;) With no way to test, I didn't know what to put in at morning on my 4th try. So I left it and hoped it would hold. I am running recirculate 24/7 so far. -Rob P.S. Going to pull the ladder now!

Can't keep the chlorine in - SLAMming in Canada!

Thanks for your comments, Texas & robdac. I am definitely getting a proper kit ASAP but need to make an attempt in the meantime, summer is too short! This is actually my first SLAM attempt. The other 4 were to try a regular single shock "pool store style", before I understood the SLAM. If...

Can't keep the chlorine in - SLAMming in Canada!

Greetings All, This is my introductory post. Like many before me, I'm sure, it's about the chlorine disappearing act! First off let me say that this forum has a wealth of knowledge and I really appreciate all of the help. It was overwhelming at first, but I quickly realized that for TFPC, no...
