    Thoughts on bio-active cya reducer

Thanks AU. Lots to consider there. Is there any (convenient?) way of checking for bacteria? Or would doing a super-chlorination based on suspicion just be easier? What would you recommend for a 27Kgal pool? I appreciate the assist, and hope you're esky remains full of stubbies even into...

    Thoughts on bio-active cya reducer

Although I've been putting between 1-2 gals of liquid chlorine in the pool per day, my FC level is 0.5 ppm and the CC is at .25 ppm. Weak, I know, but I'm chalking it up to the non-existent stabilizer.

    Thoughts on bio-active cya reducer

Dang - sorry I wasn't here to defend my results. I'm no expert on any of this stuff, but have made a living observing and trying to make sense of things. I'm simply reporting my observations, make of them what you will. The 20 ppm of CYA seems to have been a flash in the pan, I agree that...

    Thoughts on bio-active cya reducer

Well, it looks like I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum! 27K gal pool, CYA was about 150, using chlorine bleach, struggling to keep FC levels up adding 1 gal/day, pump running 24 hrs/day at 28 GPM. All other chem levels are in the slot. I used an 8 oz. pack of the Bio-Active, 1 day later...

Trying to weigh cost of bleach vs. SWG

New - thanks for the detailed info. 500W for the CG? And I'm so proud of the 160W my pump is currently burning, seems a shame to load the circuit back up (no cheap coal based electricity out here). Out of curiosity, how do you measure Borates? It seems to me to be the exact same procedure as...

Trying to weigh cost of bleach vs. SWG

Mark - I did the CYA test myself, I learned to distrust pools stores shortly after I started using them. Yes, the dot was completely obscured. Great question, though, always good to be sure of the facts.

Trying to weigh cost of bleach vs. SWG

CC is 0. Current numbers: FC - 3 to 6 (depending on time of day) TC - same CC - 0 pH - 7.4 (aerating to bring this up) TA - 120 (adding muriatic acid to bring this down, hence the low pH) CH - 300 CYA - 40 Yes, my cover is clear not opaque. Prior to finding this forum my only concern in a...

Trying to weigh cost of bleach vs. SWG

mas - my CYA is 40. Funny, after having a CYA level of about 200 (off the scale for my test kit) I was stoked to finally be reading 40 after draining and refilling the pool. That number is a little below mid range based on my goal numbers, but within range based on the Pool Calculator numbers...

Trying to weigh cost of bleach vs. SWG

Seems to be about 2 ppm currently. The pool cover is on throughout the season. If the loss were to remain constant thru the year that puts me at only $500 a year for bleach. Based on replies, the FC loss should decrease during winter and may increase during the peak of the summer...

Trying to weigh cost of bleach vs. SWG

I'm doing the calculations to try to make an educated decision on whether or not to buy a SWG. I've read here that losing 1/2 of the FC each day is a reasonable expectation. My FC target is 6, so that would be a loss of 3 ppm of bleach each day. The Pool Calculator tells me that for a 27Kgal...

Am I missing something or is my local pool supply confused?

If chlorine pucks was the only thing Leslie's misdirected me to buy I'd be happy. Last year we burned hundreds of dollars on their phosphate treatments, and each employee had a different theory about why this miracle cure wasn't working. We even had them dissing their fellow employees...

Pool not warming up after water change?

You know, after we resurfaced the pool with "Tahoe Blue" plaster our typical temps went from the mid 80s to the low 90s. I was always a little surprised about how warm our water was (like I said, there were spells where we'd leave the solar blanket off for a day or two because the temps were in...

Pool not warming up after water change?

AP - no, no, no. I never intended that comment for you. Sorry! Your reply was thoughtful and I guessed your intention to be sincere. I thank you for your willingness to try to help. With respect to the water temp, everything you say is true enough. However, the initial temperature is...

Pool not warming up after water change?

Maybe them splashing around is just what I need to aerate my pH back to where it should be!

Pool not warming up after water change?

Boy, pretty sharp contrast to those good folks who are actually trying to be helpful. Didn't your momma ever tell you if you can't say anything nice..... PV - the real question here is not why is my water is colder or warmer than yours. Maybe if you could get past your envy you'd see that. My...

Pool not warming up after water change?

Ahhh, thanks. I didn't know that the user set the goals, I thought that was done automatically by the program (and yes, I do have troublefreepool.com selected). Sounds like the program provides suggested values but they can be altered. Thanks once again.

Pool not warming up after water change?

Wow, that was pretty clueless of me. Thanks Bama. Ya got that right enough. I am following the pool calculator to the letter, but after a day the FC drops from what I'm assuming is 4.0 (based on what the calculator has calculated with the numbers I've entered and 4.0 being the goal) to about 2...

Pool not warming up after water change?

I'm a little stumped that my pool has not returned to previous temperatures after draining and refilling. I had expected to pretty much lose the rest of the summer, but became much more optimistic when my temps were in the mid 70s after the refill was complete. I hoped that I'd be back into the...

    Can't keep Chlorine up

OK, thanks to all. Of all the things that are out of balance, I just wasn't sure (until now) what the biggest problem was. Tabs are coming out, no more bags of shock. I'm going to rig an emitter that attaches to the pool sweep fitting that will send a stream skyward to help with the aeration...

    Can't keep Chlorine up

This problem has lasted for the past year. Since I found this forum, and am trying the BBB for the first time I am hopeful that I can get control of this problem but right now I'm stymied. The pool calculator has me adding lots of chlorine and borax, which I have been doing, but it doesn't seem...

    Noob checking in

Just wanted to say hello before I dip my toes into the pool. Just upgraded my pump, glad to have finally gotten away from my decades old unit. What a treat to watch the new pump use less power than 2 light bulbs. Currently trying to research what to do about replacing my pool...
