I always turn off the swcg when adding salt. It’s simply not worth risking damage to expensive swcg equipment.

I doubt I would have survived if we had social media back then like today (I’m not joking).

It’s either the salt, city water, or combination of both.

That’s what I’ve been using for several years now. Gradually, given enough time (weeks?), iron stains will start showing, especially on the steps. But to be fair, it seems no matter what I’ve used over the past 21 years, iron stains slowly show up given enough time.

That’s good to know. The grey scum I experienced (had to clean it off the waterline) really turned me off to it, not the mention the mystery ingredient. Perhaps my experience was a fluke. Has anyone confirmed that using this salt really does prevent iron stains? I’ve been using Jacks Magic...

This also applies to the Aqua Salt product. It also advertises stain inhibitors without disclosing what chemical is used (I tried calling them, but the person I spoke to had no clue). The time I tried it, it was very dirty; lots of nasty grey scum floated to the surface.

Tough problem. Some have had luck with a motion detector sprinkler. Spiky mats around the pool might work as well.

I believe the risk is the grids may become permanently clogged. However, it sounds like you have a spare new set of grids to use in case the old grids get clogged?

This sounds like chlorine is fighting something in the water.

Given the potentially severe consequences, it seems silly not to take the simple precaution of wiring a SWCG properly to eliminate the risk.

I’m surprised the manual says that. 😲 Most state that power to the SWCG must be off when the pump isn’t running. The flow switch is a backup/secondary safety device. If the cell operates without sufficient water flow, hydrogen gas can build up in the cell resulting in an explosion risk. One...

With all the vegetation around here, I run our Polaris 280 every couple days or so. Doing this, the only brushing I have to do are places the Polaris can’t reach (stairs, behind the deep end ladder, etc).

Other than perhaps acting as a “roving return” that might help with circulation, the Polaris has nothing to do with chemical balance. Edit: I just realized the OP is using suction side cleaner, not a pressure side cleaner (ie 280), so my comment about it acting like a roving return doesn’t...

Would you share the link? I didn’t know such a thing existed. This past spring one of the union nuts cracked on my Tcell. I ended up having a pool company replace the unions.

This makes a big difference in reducing FC loss and likely explains your success with lower CYA levels. By covering or using higher CYA levels, either way FC is being protected from UV. Somewhere around here it was discussed how that chart showing FC loss in relation to CYA level doesn’t seem...

With your pH pretty stable, I wouldn’t worry about lowering it before your trip. It’s not a problem even if it does get a little high for a few days while you’re gone.

Yes, I do have to pump water off the cover periodically. When just using the mesh cover, I would periodically have to pump water out of the pool as well (because of our high water table, I don’t lower the pool water level at closing to help prevent the liner from floating).
