Opened pool 3 days ago. Everything great until today - black marks on bottom

This is my 16th year opening my pool. Three days ago I did what I do every year. Began filtering 24/7. Vacuumed sides and bottom. Changed DE 3 times. Water got clearer every day. Today it was very clear. There was some dark residue on the bottom of the deep end, so I vacuumed it away this...

Which is best for underground pipe repair?

Which is best for an underground PVC pipe repair? Union, Compression coupling, or Slip (telescoping) coupling? Union has one o-ring, Compression has two seals, and Slip has 3 o-rings.

Proper pipe fittings for my repair

The pipe on the left goes to my pool inlet fitting, and looks like ABS. The pipe on the right is 1-1/2" ABS back to my pump. The white fitting has broken (MIP on left to barb fitting inside pipe on right). I'm going to have to cut the ABS on the right at least 2 inches to get past the broken...

    Replacing an old inlet fitting

I need to replace an old chrome inlet fitting in my vinyl in-ground pool. I am planning to us a Hayward SP1408 fitting. The directions say the pool wall thickness must be equal to or below 1/4" or between 5/8" and 1". I don't have it all apart yet, but I think my wall thickness is 1/2". Why...

New pump - Hayward 3/4 hp or 1 hp?

I'm redoing my pool plumbing, and I thought I would replace my pump while I'm at it. I currently have a 3/4 hp Sta-Rite pump that is at least 15 years old (all metal housing). It's still going strong, but I can't expect it to work forever. I think the previous owner bought the pump and the...

Pool heater bypass and check valve

I'm installing a new pool heater for my inground pool. I am going to plumb in a bypass so I can bypass the heater when it's not in use. I know I need a check valve between the chlorinator and the heater outlet. I also read somewhere that there should be a check valve in the bypass system. So...

Where to buy replacement winter cover

I need to replace my solid winter cover (with straps, springs, etc.). I'm having trouble finding a place to buy a replacement cover, where the brass inserts are already in the concrete. There are plenty of websites that will sell me a new cover, where they decide where the seams, straps, and...

Algae (or something) appears at FC of 10

I have a crystal clear pool and have been enjoying it this summer. I use the TFP method. Last year while on vacation, the FC dropped to 0 and there were slight grayish hazy areas on the bottom, which I assume was algae. When I raised the FC to shock level, the areas disappeared. However, since...

Algae returns at FC level of 7

In July while on vacation my chlorine level dropped to 1, and there were light grayish-green patches of algae on the bottom. I SLAMmed and thought the problem was fixed. But since then, if the chlorine drops to 7 or below, the patches re-form. With my CYA at less than 30, I would like to keep...

Algae after 3 weeks of non-use?

I was away from my pool for three weeks. I use the trouble-free method and never have any problems. When I took the solar cover off upon returning home, the water looked fine, but there are several large light-gray or light-green blotches on the bottom of the pool, both in the shallow and deep...
