Using TF-100 kit and during the hottest part of the summer (July-Aug) getting Green Algae

Guess the 93% pool water temp makes no difference? To determine the CYA I use a red tipped bottle in the TF-100 kit, fill up to the bottom of the label with water, then fill to the top of the label with R-0013 taylor solution, shake then start to fill the CYA view TUBE till I cannot see the...

Using TF-100 kit and during the hottest part of the summer (July-Aug) getting Green Algae

That makes since. Yes the R-0870 is a purple/brown color so it is probably bad. Does the pool temperature at 93% have anything to do with the chlorine lock?

Using TF-100 kit and during the hottest part of the summer (July-Aug) getting Green Algae

Ok I can do the SLAM process... I appreciate your help, still need to know what I have done wrong to get in this situation? I have kept the CL >4 PH around 7.5, and CYA at 40 all summer. Otherwise, there is something to the process requiring SLAM every summer. or is SLAM required every summer?

Using TF-100 kit and during the hottest part of the summer (July-Aug) getting Green Algae

Added 5 drops of R-0003 to the 10 ml water and R-0870 combination, and the color has a slight yellow tinge to it.

Using TF-100 kit and during the hottest part of the summer (July-Aug) getting Green Algae

I just went out to the pool. I put a heaping spoon full of R-0870 into the 10ml of pool water and it did not turn pink. I then tested the cl with the K-1000 test kit and it is reading >5. The PH just spiked from 7.5 this AM and now 8.2 so will add M acid.

Using TF-100 kit and during the hottest part of the summer (July-Aug) getting Green Algae

I usually do not do the FC test only the K-1000 basic test daily and keep the CL >4. I did the FC test because I knew there was a issue at hand. Additionally just tested the water temperature with a very accurate thermometer... it is 93 F. The chemical I am using for the CYA test is R-0013...

Using TF-100 kit and during the hottest part of the summer (July-Aug) getting Green Algae

I have been using the TF-100 kit and have been checking and maintaining daily the water chemistry. Last week the pool started getting green at the bottom and is steadily getting more green algae. Here is my current water chemistry. pH=7.4 (have kept it between 7.2 and 7.5), TA=100 (have kept...

    Replacing Pump/Filtration system for a 20,000 pool.

Much respect for you guys. Thanks much for your good input. superhsd - ty bud! The electric motor died so I replaced it with a new Pentair 1 HP two speed motor for about $250. It is soooooo much better than the old pump. The high speed is powerful and pulls water better than the old pump...

    Replacing Pump/Filtration system for a 20,000 pool.

The motor is surely not working anymore and will not stay spinning. Used a drill with a common bit to get it started but even when primed with water it will slow to a stop then just hum and start to show some smoke. So, I just ordered a 3/4 HP Pentair Dynamo 2 speed... more to come. Will have...

    Replacing Pump/Filtration system for a 20,000 pool.

Thanks all for your good info. My old pump for some reason is still working... I thought it was burned up. Will keep it working till it dies, and when it does, a 2 speed pump and much larger sand filter are going in. :)

    Replacing Pump/Filtration system for a 20,000 pool.

Intermatic t 104 timer, yes will do. And 1 HP 2speed pentair Superflo. Yus. The pump, i think is using 120 V? It has a green and Black and copper wire attached to it. The breaker is double wide. I will measure it with my volt meter and find out.

    Replacing Pump/Filtration system for a 20,000 pool.

Thanks you guys! Makes since for the 2 speed motor. I don't know much about how they operate. Do they have a clock/timer to turn off/on pump? Also motor is a 3/4 HP 3450 RPM Emmerson and filter is a Sand Tagelus TA40/400 rated at 40 GPM. Here is a picture of it... and the back cover is off...

    Replacing Pump/Filtration system for a 20,000 pool.

Hi and thanks for your good reply mas985. The 35' of head was calculated by summing up the length of the 3 incoming pipes (2 skimmers and 1 main drain) into the pump from the pool and dividing that sum by 3. Your recommendation makes since. Most VS are 3 HP and seem to have too much power on...

My water looks like Lime Green KoolAid

Shocking like that can be expensive. I usually take the slow inexpensive approach using my own test kit and the Pool Math calculator. My approach: You need your own test kit and TF-100 is awesome. Once pool is full of water, keep pumps/filter running, balance the waters Alkalinity, CYA...

New pump - did I overdo it?

Hi Onslow, Tech talk... I have learned that the pump flow rate listed in GPM (Gallons per minute) should be LESS than the rated Flow Rate of your sand filter. You should check. Also the diameter of your piping is important too. For example 1.5 can handle <=~42 GPM, 2 in <= ~75 GPM, 2.5 in...

    Replacing Pump/Filtration system for a 20,000 pool.

My 19 year old pump/filtration system is ready to be replaced. It is a 20k gallon pool, 3/4 HP motor, 1.5 in pipe with 35 average feet of head, and other components shown in the signature below. I have read the filter needs to be rated for more GPM than the pump/motor combo even when the pump...

    20,000 Pool with old system

Yes agreed, the current system looses suction and when autostarting the pump it taxes the pump to regain suction so I have been manually starting stopping it each day. I like your list :) Chlorination needs if using a SWG Mixing of chemicals Keeping the water clear Keeping the surface skimmed...

    20,000 Pool with old system

Thanks for the info. bmoreswim attaching picture. JVTrain, I got 42 GPM from another web site, calculated by assumption to cycle all 20,000 gal of pool water in 8 hours.... 20,000/8 = 2500 GPH, 2500 GPH/60 = 42 GPM. However not sure if this is a true requirement.

    20,000 Pool with old system

I have a 20,000 gal pool and the old single speed 7 year old motor just died. The system uses 1.5 in pipes with 2 skimmers and one main drain. Here are my concerns. 1. The Tagelus sand filter is rated at 40 GPM when my pool should have at least a 42 GPM flow capacity. 2. The filter valve is...

    Trying to make things simple

Thanks Guys! I am using Bleach jugs with 8.25% Sodum Hypochloride and the pool is sucking it in using a lot. Yes, need to get a test kit real bad. jblizzle will be getting a TF-100 Test kit asap. Will the TP-100 test kit work with both BBB and salt? Am considering switching to the SWCG...

    Trying to make things simple

I would like to make my pool maintenance much simpler. Am using BBB and with the SC sunshine and heat, it is a daily chore to keep the pool chlorine leveled and the PH in range. At times I miss a day or 3 for travel and the algae kicks in. With the 20K gallon pool, and sand filter, is there...

    Hello from South Carolina

Hi TFP folks from South Carolina. I have recently found this forum and learning the BBB method. Yes it is much more affordable than the pool store. I am using BBB then take my sample to the pool store for fun to test and they say WOW your water is perfect! LOL. I spent enough with them last...
