Understanding Borates - Do I add them? Benefits?

joyfulnoise Thank you. I think between the two replies I understand the borates better and why/when you would use them. Also I agree on pool consistency...I can assure you that the issue is not happening when I am around. It happened when we traveled or I travelled. One time when we relied on...

Understanding Borates - Do I add them? Benefits?

Thank you chiefwej. I didn't associate using borates to specifically stabilize the pH. I can see in a SWG where that would make more sense. No water feature. I guess I was getting a little ahead of myself reading all of the articles online and thought it could be a benefit long term to help keep...

Understanding Borates - Do I add them? Benefits?

I am still fairly new to maintaining my own pool. I was just reading about Borates in the "Borates - Why and How" sticky post. There seems to be a benefit for adding them. Here are my pool stats: FC = 3.8 ph = 7.2 TA = 100 CYA = 25 water temp =78 I occasionally have some algae issues which...

Does a pool cover change target values?

I love our solar cover. I loose little to no chlorine when it is covered. I do have a smaller pool and add chlorine every 2-4 days to bring it up 1ppm when covered. It's wonderful, low maintenance and costs very little (thank you TPP!). I have averaged between 30-40 on my CYA this year. I just...

    Algae? SLAM?? - Advice please

Hi Chemicals are balanced. Chemicals have stayed balanced the last two weeks despite some things and I am not adding more chlorine than normal. Today: Water is slightly cloudy today. Noticed green/brown stuff on bottom which I vacuumed, backwashed and rinsed. Green/brown stuff throughout the...

Rotted Bottom Track --- NEW POOL?

Thank you all for your comments. We are moving forward to restore the pool. The pool is empty. All the walls are in excellent condition. The tracking was only effected two pieces. We believe the leak that sprung recently in the liner contributed to the issue --- it was probably a pin hole and...

Rotted Bottom Track --- NEW POOL?

Just realized there were 3 responses. So thank you again. And the plan is to drain to look behind the liner and determine parts. I don't think that was clear. Sorry for the double post...using my phone makes it challenging to see, type and post. Love this website! Always great advise.

Rotted Bottom Track --- NEW POOL?

Thank you both for your comments. I spoke to the referral the original guy said to call. He said from what I described we should probably drain the pool and look behind the liner to see what parts might be needed. He needs to stop by and see the pool and structure, and let us know how far to...

Rotted Bottom Track --- NEW POOL?

Photos: top showing gap. It was closer gap last yr. Underneath. Then the bad wall which shows the wall separated from the track completely and the track rotted in a section. The other wall I took a picture of but it wasn't great...that wall is not as bad because the wall is in the track but...

Rotted Bottom Track --- NEW POOL?

When I look up pools online they don't seem so expensive. What am I missing? What would be the cost for a AG 18x32 pool. 54 inches. Descent but not top of line. Including the liner. We are handy people. We could take the pool down. We could even prep and level things. We could modify the decking...

Rotted Bottom Track --- NEW POOL?

We have been home owners for 2 years. Pool was put in 1998. Pool was inspected prior to move in. Pool is surrounded by a huge and wonderful decking system. We noticed this year that two walls have moved and are out of plum. The top is starting to go towards the water slightly on two sections of...

pH has been increasing - why?

Sorry for the confusion. I changed the signature. 3"pucks are used. New bucket of pucks that husband wants to use. We compromised on if the CYA got to 50, we switch to liquid chlorine. We use about 1.5 pucks weekly. I use liquid bleach for the out of norm things (drop in FC below our range or...

pH has been increasing - why?

FC= 4.5 CC=0 pH = 7.8 Alkalinity = 100 Calcium hardness = 160 CYA = 40 My numbers are all good, and water is clear. My husband thinks I over analyze the pool numbers but I can't help but wonder why? I have noticed that the last few weeks my ph has been on the rise. Started at 7.2 then 7.4...

    Pool Water Temperature?

I am in CT and we find 78 or above to be comfy. I am sure it is personal preference. The kids complain that it is cold at 76 and will not go in! We use a solar cover almost all the time which helps with water evaporation, chlorine levels (I seem to use less), holding the temp especially at night...

No Free Chlorine...even after adding liquid 12% chlorine

Thank you for walking me thru my first SLAM and answering my questions. Passed OCLT and had a little bit of R-0871 to spare. Thankfully that all worked out! I will be smarter and wiser in the future. Certainly will be on top of my chlorine numbers!

No Free Chlorine...even after adding liquid 12% chlorine

scott.MI YES! I am doing the OCLT tonite and in the morning with 10ml for accuracy. It's after that because I am running low. Crossing my fingers and hope I loose less then 1ppm tonite and then I am done and new reagent is on the way!

No Free Chlorine...even after adding liquid 12% chlorine

Rick thanks again! Yes I am using the 10ml which requires 40 drops to get to 20ppm each time. I could do the 5ml instead as you stated. I am looking to order from TFTestkits.net now as recommended in another forum here and hoping to get quick shipping. I agree with you on the pool store...

No Free Chlorine...even after adding liquid 12% chlorine

Thanks Rick. I only turned on the chlorinator this morning because I was going to work and wanted to keep the levels high. I will shut it now. Current readings were good. FC=20ppm and all others are holding. I have kept the pool covered so the sunlight will not have as much of an effect. I...

No Free Chlorine...even after adding liquid 12% chlorine

For working folks. I checked the pool at 6am and lost 3ppm's last night so I failed the OCLT on that criteria. Everything else looks good. Clear water, no CC. All other readings are same as yesterday so that is good. I added chlorine this morning at 6am and also added an excess to hopefully...

No Free Chlorine...even after adding liquid 12% chlorine

Thanks Smykowski...I didn't know the percentage. I did note the number after backwashing in May and it was 19. Curr't back currently the pool is at 20psi. I won't backwash until 24. Got my chlorine. Waiting for the last of the sun to make it's way off the pool and SLAMing will begin.

No Free Chlorine...even after adding liquid 12% chlorine

Thank you! I have been reading more and understand the terms a bit better and it is beginning to make more sense. I am going to run out and purchase more liquid chlorine plenty to spare. I will SLAM the pool and follow the guideline until I pass the OCLT (which I now know what that means!)...

No Free Chlorine...even after adding liquid 12% chlorine

I am a new pool owner (just moved) and learning a lot! I am a bit confused at what has happened with our pool and need advise before proceeding. Details: Above ground pool, vinyl liner, 15,000 gal, sand filter, chorinator. We used the tabs at the end of last summer without an issue and have...
