Hey ! Willi is glad to be here !!

Thanks for the input jbizzle...first problem, I did the testing indoors and did not pour back and forth, I will do that from now on. I think that is the cause of my inconsistent CYA reading. I have started brushing and vac-to-waste so alot of the water will be replaced that way. I usually...

Hey ! Willi is glad to be here !!

Opening the pool this Friday and am way too excited to start with the new test kit and see better results. I spent some time reading TFP pool school since I joined, I feel pretty confident but I am sure I will have questions until I feel comfortable with understanding the chemistry. Purchased...

    Pool opening problem

Notice tooth marks on the "nut", really only want to hand tighten fittings. The times you do need to tighten (half to 3/4 turn at most) use a rubber strap wrench, looks like you possibly over-tightened and it broke? Metal tools love to break PVC and plastic. We have used Gorilla glue in the...

    What am I forgetting?

I need the same, I am light skinned and burn quick. When I had an above ground pool I purchased a cheap patio umbrella, drilled a couple holes in the pool then screwed it to the handrail so it shaded about a 4 foot area, that was my little spot and everyone knew it :) We have a pool house on...

cement deck or stamped concrete deck around IG pool ???

Found this: http://www.concretenetwork.com/slip-resistant-coatings/gritty-sealers.html "Several manufacturers sell a grit that can be added to the final sealer coat to increase the coefficient of friction. Chris Sullivan, National Sales Manager for QC Construction Products and one of the...

Using more unions when plumbing pool equipment.

Moose, same here with the box of mass O-rings...comes in handy. I have never seen or even heard of the self-aligning. As Moose says, if its a hair off there is always enough play that it will go together. So I would venture to guess that all unions are self aligning if you can get the nut started.

Using more unions when plumbing pool equipment.

Side note..when you start your project keep the unions together as long as possible before you glue...as I can bet about every person in this forum has glued a union and forgot to put on the #%&$ nut. It is the worst feeling when you realize what you have done lol Also dont over-tighten the...

Using more unions when plumbing pool equipment.

To be quite honest I have never used the self-aligning and not sure if my supply house even carries them. Give them a try and let us know how you like them. Yes, silicone or teflon, stay away from petroleum based like Vaseline. Most pool or plumbing supply shops carry it.

    Pump Problems

Sounds like impeller issues. Disconnect the power, shut your valves and take the front cover off the pump housing to inspect and clean the impeller. Hopefully the hub and impeller are intact.

Using more unions when plumbing pool equipment.

Regular PVC is the norm and would be fine. I have never had a bad experience with any manufacturer nor any union. I have had old ones leak but cleaning and lubing the O-ring usually takes care of the leak. The self-aligning and swivel could be used in special applications. I take care of...

Has anyone installed their own natural gas heater?

Not to be rude but if you dont know how hard it would be I would guess that it would beyond what you want to tackle especially dealing with natural gas and electricity. You could purchase and set but do yourself a favor and hire the other parts out to certified professionals.

    help with pool light wiring/GFCI

The pump should have a means of disconnect at or close by but not closer than 5 feet to the pool. Means of disconnect is either by a twist lock plug or in your case being hardwired you would need to have a certified electrician install a breaker or switch that is GFCI protected. GFCI outlets...

    help with pool light wiring/GFCI

Could there possibly be a GFCI circuit breaker in the main electrical panel? If none, I would have a GFCI breaker installed in the house panel to protect the entire circuit. If it trips the electric will be interrupted at the panel and not in the junction box out by the pool.

I concur, cant imagine having to cut and replace pipe and fitting every time you need to do maintenance or repair.

Unions should be installed to every piece of equipment can be removed without cutting pipe...pump, filter, heater etc.

I wondering now if mine is Silicone based because my gaskets are not sticky and dont gum up. It looks and feels like Vaseline.

    O ring seal lubrication

Dont use Vaseline or any petroleum based lube as it will deteriorate the rubber. Its best to use Teflon based lubes like Magic Lube. My supply house carries it and I would imagine most would carry some kind of Teflon based. http://www.pondparts.com/Accessories/Magic-Lube-O-Ring-Lube-p-256.html
