3 week vacation - can I use a puck or will it be a disaster?

Been doing BBB for several years, zero problems, no SLAM since the first one when we bought the house. Never used a puck. CYA is a little below 30 right now. Family member comes over to check the pool when we go on vacation. We're going on a longer vacation than usual (3 weeks) and I'd like to...

    Clueless! New to forum

Just to follow up on what Richard320 said here - during my SLAM I was getting a weird result: I seemed to be mostly done with the SLAM but I just couldn't get my FC to stay steady overnight - it would lose a few points no matter what. It turns out that without the diverter valve in, the line...

Can't keep pH down, losing a lot of FC, bubbles from the return, so confused!

Summary: new (to me) pool, then did a drain, refill, SLAM (with success), here's where we are now: 7/21 @ 19:56, ambient: 98°f; water: 86°f: pH: 7.5 (after adding ~32oz 14.5% MA an hour ago) FC: 4 CC: 0 TA: 120 CH: 275 CYA: 35 (!) My CYA has been holding at 50, I am shocked to see 35. I can't...

Did a drain/refill, now doing a SLAM, sanity check requested

So the SLAM went wonderfully once I realized my pool was missing a skimmer/main drain diverter and the algae was illegally squatting in the drain pipe! Once I got a diverter and got the main drain working it all cleared out almost instantly. Yay! The pool looks far more clear and crisp than I've...

Did a drain/refill, now doing a SLAM, sanity check requested

Thanks for the sanity check, guys! I will stay the course and see what happens with the OCLT tonight. I didn't even think that swimming in it during the SLAM was an option so I'll shoot for 24 tomorrow during the day and let it settle down to 16 for overnight.

I've continued this thread over here now that I've done the drain and refill.

Did a drain/refill, now doing a SLAM, sanity check requested

I posted a while ago when I was just getting started. I just performed a drain and refill, tweaked things a bit (added acid to lower pH, added CYA to get to an appropriate level) and here's where we were after that: 6/7 14:32 105°f FC 2 CC 0 PH 7.2 TA 130 CH 300 CYA 35 I started the SLAM...

Starting from scratch, need some advice

Thank you all so much for responding and helping to demystify this pool situation. I can't tell you how comforting it is to have experts on the job. :) I agree, quite well-written. Thank you for this, this situation is so much easier to comprehend with a narrative versus some perplexing test...

Starting from scratch, need some advice

Yes it was. I'm pretty sure I did the test right but I'll probably do it again in a few days to ensure I did. Yeah. I have no idea how it got so high. Perhaps the prior owner added a bunch before moving out? I'm new to all this so I don't know exactly what I'm doing in regards to backwashing...

Starting from scratch, need some advice

To me the water looks pretty good, apart from the accumulation on the bottom (the left side is where I've swept with the brush, the right side shows the accumulation which I assume to be algae). Very clear water and it looks pretty blue to me. I could not get a reading because it clouded up...

Starting from scratch, need some advice

Purchased a home in Phoenix constructed in 1985. This is my first pool and I don't know much about pools in general or the one at this house - math using the kurtzwater.com volume calculator and a tape measure has me thinking it's about 14,000 gallons. It's appears to have a Hayward Pro-Grid...
