    dumb question

To get optimal control of your pool you will need to invest in a decent test kit. Once you have that it is fairly simple to take a reading and use Pool Math to calculate how much of each chemical to add. The bleach will not affect you liner any more than any other source of chlorine, just...

New Pool Owner Needs Help deciding between automatic and robotic pool cleaner

Your range of choices will depend on what type of pool you have (size and shape), what type of matter it has to remove (dust, dirt, leaves, branches, acorns etc.) and how much you have to run your pump to keep the pool chemically in control. If you can provide some details they you may receive...

    cant get it clean

You need to clean it as thoroughly as possible. Anything that is left behind in the pool is going to use up chlorine, and/or clog your filters. Once you have cleaned the pool as much as you can, then follow the SLAM process (see Pool School).

Why is my filter pressure so high?

I respectfully disagree. As an example consider a waste water outlet at the pump output. Opening the valve to the outlet will cause a drop in pressure.

Why is my filter pressure so high?

High pressure can be caused by anything after the pump, not just the filters. It could be as simple as a return valve which has been bumped into a low flow position, or a return jet swiveled into a poor flow position.

Let's Beat the Dead Horse Some More---Pool Cleaner vs MX8 Advice Wanted

Just thought I should add that yesterday evening I had a chance to experiment with the floats which clip to the hose and by removing one of the floats the Pool Cleaner now climbs the walls much more effectively. I should be able to optimize it even more by moving the float up/down the hose.

Device removes 1 unit of old water, replaces it with 1 equal unit of fresh water

4,000 gallons in 8 hours = 500 gallons per hour. That may be more than the garden hose can provide. If your aim is to remove CYA then you will want a spreaders both where the water comes in and goes out to minimize mixing effects. Check supply and pool water temperatures and use the...

    Test Kit for new owner

Any of the kits listed on the pool school page are good. The TF-100 has more chemicals so you can do more tests, I went with the K-2006 as I found the pH test easier to read (the pH readings are in steps of 0.2 and the test tube is wider so the colors are much more obvious). Having just...

Let's Beat the Dead Horse Some More---Pool Cleaner vs MX8 Advice Wanted

My initial impressions of "The Pool Cleaner". Installation as per instructions was simple and easy. Total time from lets get the parts out from the box to set-up and doing a first test run was no more than 20 minutes. In my case I added a leaf canister to the suction line. The floats which...

freshwater silver ion system vs. other santizer system

I think it should be possible to maintain a clean and sanitary pool using the system you describe. My main concern would be with the silver. I see 2 issues. The first is that silver can cause stains, these should be removable on a non-porous surface, but some surfaces can be almost impossible...

pool cleaners - do you remove when you shock or when people swim?

Chlorine is a very corrosive substance, so I would remove the cleaner if you need to shock or SLAM. I would think the recommendation for removing the cleaner when people are swimming is a safety issue as it is all too easy for someone to get tangled in the hose, especially if the cleaner is...

Just getting started getting mixed answers to questions

You may notice that many of the signatures on the forum have all the pool details (size, equipment etc.). This helps people answer your questions and also means you don't have to keep listing your pool details each time you ask a question.

Let's Beat the Dead Horse Some More---Pool Cleaner vs MX8 Advice Wanted

I will be happy to report. It will be the weekend before I set it up as I want to be able to monitor it for a while to be sure no other adjustments are required.

Let's Beat the Dead Horse Some More---Pool Cleaner vs MX8 Advice Wanted

I bought The Pool Cleaner. According to FedEx it is sitting by my front door waiting for me (just delivered this morning!). My investigations suggested that the MX-8 requires a bit more maintenance and is a little more finicky. The 2 wheel Pool Cleaner seemed to just cover my pool so I went...

Hayward Navigator - Repair or Replace?

When we bpught this house a few months ago, the pool came with a Hayward Navigator. I think this is quite old as the plastic of the body has the feel of plastic which has had a lot of UV exposure (a sort of "powder coated" sensation, some yellowing of the plastic and the hose connectors are...

    High Chlorine Consumption from blossoms?

Thank you for the replies. It looks like the blossoms were the cause. Wednesday night was still and few blossoms fell in the pool => no chlorine consumption (actually the FC reading increased, which I guess is due to temperature effects, warm evening vs. cold morning). Last night we had rain...

    High Chlorine Consumption from blossoms?

I am having some high chlorine consumption, about 3ppm per day. I have been doing a SLAM for 3 days now, and the consumption is not going down. I am beginning to think it may be consumption for other reasons. To provide some background: 1) I had the pool reverse osmosis treated last week...

    Preparing for RO.

We have been in this house less than 2 months. The previous owner had the pool maintained by a "pool guy" so I guess the high CYA is due to heavy use of tablets (there is an auto chlorinator on the pool). I have been using liquid chlorine and plan to continue doing so.

    Preparing for RO.

When I spoke with the RO company they did not request any preparation. Their biggest concern is getting the CYA down, as their machine uses TDS to determine when the water is "clean". They mainly deal with high CH issues in our area so are not completely sure how CYA acts on TDS. I was not...

    Preparing for RO.

I have arranged for RO treatment of my pool due to CYA=300 and CH=950. I was wondering what things I should do before the RO and to prepare for the process. I was thinking of cleaning the calcium deposits on the spa overflow and water feature. Anything else people can suggest? Thank you.

    Best place to buy bleach?

$18ish for 6 gallons of 5.25% is $0.446 per oz of chlorine. That's expensive. I am getting $0.266 at my local pool store.

First accurate tests - high CYA and CH

Finally received my K-2006 test kit. The first test reasults are: FC: 2.5 ppm CC: 0 pH: 7.5 TA: 200 ppm CH: 950 ppm CYA: not sure about 1/3 of the way from the bottom of the tube to the 100 ppm mark (I was careful with judging the black dot, and repeated the reading) So my understanding...

New member and question on removing mineral cartridge

Just to wrap things up I thought I should list the solution I used. This is for the Nature 2 express mineral cartridge which is the type which screws into a holder and the domed cartridge top forms the top of the unit. 1) Stop the pump. 2) Remove the cartridge (unscrews at the outer rim) 3)...

The cartridge is a Zodiac Nature 2. Looking at the old cartridge it screws down into a holder and the cartridge itself is the top.

New member and question on removing mineral cartridge

I just recently moved into a house with a pool, never owned a pool before and after getting some very poor info from local pool stores I managed to stumble onto this site. Finally a place which may give me some clear information. I just ordered a Taylor K-2006 kit so I am sure I will have more...
