Yes, I agree. There are two separate issues - the filter being the most critical. The multiport valve does feel a little sloppy. I guess I can go replace the multiport top and see if that helps. I know they arent cheap but Im getting desparate and the kids are getting antsy about swimming.

I replaced the filter sand in mid 2008 due to cracked lateral. Here are some shots:

I put a sock over the outlet jet and in just a few minutes collected a noticable amount of large particles (including a 1cm worm)... I inspected the filter yesterday and didnt see anything. Im wondering if maybe some amount inlet side water is bypassing the filter.

Why would skimmer socks filter particle that the sand filter isnt?? Isnt that the point of the filter? Is there possibly something wrong with my filter and a test I can perform to make sure its filtering properly?

I have been running tests on tap water to see how much consitency I get. I was reading 130/140, but when I wiped the tip i go 90. After reading some more, I think I have not been testing properly. I was not holding the droppers completely vertical.

The foam cleared up after about 2 days. I have been trying to keep FC>20ppm and the water has cleared up a bit, still a bit cloudy with a tinge of green. (I can finally make out the bottom drain in the deep end). I vacuumed, brushed, and backwashed today.

I believe the previous owners may have used algicide but we pretty much drained the pool at the beginning of last season and never saw any foam. I did not put algicide in this season or last (although the same pool company recommended i do so now). I only hired them to help out on the manual...
