Solar heating worth it - in NJ?

I have a decent sized (18x36) inground pool. My backyard gets direct sun from 800am to 600pm in the summer. But right now although the pool is up and 'running' it's unusable given the temperature. (Currently in the mid 60s ) I do have an existing gas line out there for a heater that was...

    Pre-pool opening questions

Just found the Vitamin C buried in the back of the medicine cabinet from last pool season. Confirmed metal staining. I HATE THIS POOL! *deep breaths*

    Pre-pool opening questions

Good morning everyone - So the other night, on Tuesday night we finally got the pool filled up and chlorinated. I added a 5 gallon container from my pool guy that was not labeled as mentioned earlier. An hour later (with an expectation of FC of around 16 based on gallonage and the pool calc...

    Pre-pool opening questions

Ok - with my SLAM target of a 16 for FC, 5 gallons of 10% are going in now. Per pool calculator it needs 549 ounces, so i'm overshooting a little bit on the ounces but figured better safe than sorry. 640 ounces going in now. Will also brush and check the filter to ensure it doesn't need to be...

    Pre-pool opening questions

Ok finally got it filled up and vacuumed out. First batch of readings for this season are FC - 0 CC - 0 pH - 7.2 CYA - 40 TA - 60 I feel like these numbers look good, but before I dump anything in can someone confirm? I can use pool calc to determine the amounts if someone can tell me the...

    Pre-pool opening questions

Tim, will do. I will add the FC but want to do it myself after I've done readings when the filter goes on. (I don't want to guess the percentage of the strength if he takes the bucket with him. :) )

    Pre-pool opening questions

Thanks all. Pool guy is here, water is going in now. I've instructed not to add chlorine at this point and I will handle. Once the filter is on and running per Tim's comment, I'll come back with results. Fingers crossed. (Water is green with some algae at first glance.)

    Pre-pool opening questions

Happy spring from NJ! Pool guy is coming sometime this week to open up my pool for me. I want to be sure I'm at the ready to tell him to back away with his chemicals and I will handle it. I know that the almighty dictator of next steps is pool water test results which I will have once the...

Post ascorbic acid treatment - confirming the next steps

Is it common that after doing the AA treatment the test from the Taylor kit still shows no iron in the water? Even though I just watched it lift off the liner like magic? I know it's not okay to shock the pool (and nor do I have a hankering for adding bleach to it anymore), but given my pool...

Post ascorbic acid treatment - confirming the next steps

Thanks Jason! One more question, is there a safe to swim FC chart somewhere? IE without the FC, but with the algaecide in it, is the pool still safe for us to use? Or should the FC be at a certain level prior to doing so? And outside of safe to use, would there be any other side effects to...

Post ascorbic acid treatment - confirming the next steps

Hi all - I finally now not only have a crystal clear pool but it's so blue it stings my eyes! It's beautiful and the ascorbic acid process worked like a charm!!! (Not that I expected differently from this place, but felt it was worth declaring.) Now that the pool is sparkly blue (seriously...

Added Jack's Blue Stuff for Vinyl Liners with minmal change

Thanks for clarifying, Jason. I agree it seems a little odd that it worked previously, but we have previously tacked it when it first started. Since this started prior to the SLAM process, and the SLAM process went on for a while, maybe it's just 'baked in' for now. Now to find the Poly 60 in...

Added Jack's Blue Stuff for Vinyl Liners with minmal change

Thanks Jason! I have one more bottle of the Vinly Liner Blue Stuff, two bottles of the Jack's Magenta and four bottles of the HtH Metal Control. Any chance any of these have a chance of helping with the staining? I also have a Metal Free from Natural Chemistry - the Metal Free says it is an...

Added Jack's Blue Stuff for Vinyl Liners with minmal change

Hi all - I have what are known metal stains on my vinyl liner. I made sure to drop the pH to 7.2 as recommended by Jack's. My FC was still at a 9.5 when I did this last night. I only added one of the two bottles I have on hand. Typically when I add it, the results are remarkable and it's...

    Treating metal staining post SLAM

Hi all - After what seems like weeks of SLAMing the pool, I'm finally through it! Now I get to treat the metal stains :) I do know that they are metal stains as they are not removable by brushing, only with a Vitamin C tablet. My FC is still too high to do anything, but I wanted to...

    Greenish cloudy water

So close - yet so far away. Yesterday we saw a better improvement in our OCLT test. Not 100% to pass it but enough to tell us we were closer. Last night, Mother Nature dumped two inches of rain - and there went that. First test just now at 930AM ET (delayed by torrential downpours for...

    Greenish cloudy water

Although this is much more basic then the one posted yesterday which I'm trying to work with, I have a quick cheat sheet of the last 24 hours. Testing results in red and bleach added in green for readability. Date Time Level Bleach Added Comments 6-Jun 6:30 AM 15 363 6-Jun 9:00...

    Greenish cloudy water

Went to bed at a 24 and woke up to a 19. (With some sun mind you as I only got up at 6am.) So I'm closer again then I was a few days ago. So to wake up early tomorrow and see if I pass this thing. At one point do I need to be concerned about long term damage to the equipment? I read in...

    Greenish cloudy water

Thanks Casey - I haven't put the ladders in yet and there are no lights so the only thing I have are the two return jets and the one skimmer. I just need an OCLT and naturally I didnt pass it. Today, I woke up to a 15 FC which is worse than it's been the last two days. My last test last...

    Greenish cloudy water

I'm attempting the OCLT again. I've been keeping the pool at the mustard algae SLAM level of 24 since two nights ago. The pool has been brushed and vacuumed multiple times a day since then. Water is crystal clear. I'm officially praying for my sanity :brickwall:

    Greenish cloudy water

Not even close this morning - from a 22 to a 23 last night (couldnt test because of the storm) to a 15 this morning. Still raining so hopefully that has a lot to do with it. Once this band passes, I'll have 363 oz more of the good stuff in there.

    Greenish cloudy water

Thanks Jesse. They should be here any day now, but I think I'll just run the test on FC this evening to see where I am before bedtime SLAM level adjustments to make sure that I dont go over. That will stretch me into tomorrow sometime. Thanks again!

    Greenish cloudy water

PoolMath said to add 311 oz of chlorine to the pool to bring it up to a 24. I added 363 oz (three containers of Clorox). Can someone let me know if there is an acceptable ratio to go over by? If this is mustard algae, I'm trying to use the FC level of 24 for my CYA of 40. Since I'm running...
