Converted to SWG with CYA reading 0ppm

I did consider experimenting, but with a trial and error style experiment I would only know the sweet spot after I went past it. And I wasn't too excited about needing to lower CYA back to the sweet spot.

Converted to SWG with CYA reading 0ppm

Thanks everyone. I was simply using the strips b/c I had a lesser Taylor liquid kit that did not have a CYA test. This is the 1st time I've ever used a strip in 20 years of pool ownership. I was fully expecting the backlash of comments. I understand that low CYA will burn through FC quicker...

Converted to SWG with CYA reading 0ppm

The strips I used are brand new Taylor strips. I can probably double-check and have a local pool store analyze the water more quickly and easily than getting the regular Taylor kit with CYA test.

Converted to SWG with CYA reading 0ppm

I finally pulled the trigger on converting to SWG this past week. With my wife being the primary shopper, she was tired of buying so much bleach. For 12 years, I've been doing great with bleach + borax and the occasional powder shock. About 3 years ago, my liner was replaced. I refilled...

    Pool is half empty overnight!

No, I don't know what the water table is like, but I would almost venture to say that there really isn't one to speak of. I am within a few feet of the highest point in the vicinity. The hill behind my neighbor's house drops hundreds of feet to a major river. The other directions are more...

    Pool is half empty overnight!

I pushed some of the leaves around in the deep end to see if they would be sucked toward the drain when they settled. Certainly some landed at the drain, but I can't say that I saw clear evidence that they were pulled toward it. I thought about putting some dye down there by holding a PVC pipe...

    Pool is half empty overnight!

Pool level is below the shallow end depth now. Deep end has only about 3 feet of water remaining. I brushed the leaves away in the deep end and still see no visible hole in the liner. The deep end has sloped walls, so there are no more 90 degree transitions between wall and floor remaining...

    Pool is half empty overnight!

I am leaning toward this conclusion as well. Maybe I didn't see it before the leaves got in there b/c I simply wasn't looking for that problem. American Leak Detection won't get in an outdoor pool again until April around here. Then again, I shouldn't need them with a hole big enough to lose...

    Pool is half empty overnight!

Today's update: Pool water level is now below both light fixtures. That means it is at the bottom edge of the steps and only about 6 inches remain in the shallow end. No signs that it has stopped losing water. I inspected the liner visually from the pool deck and see no signs of holes, though...

    Pool is half empty overnight!

Here are some pictures. Overnight the water lowered further to midway down on the lights. Still not clear whether the water has stopped receding or not. One light has been missing for years and it certainly appears that the metal canister that contained the light has rusted. That may have...

    Pool is half empty overnight!

Cleaned the pool. Lost the water. Blew out the return lines and skimmers since they were now above water line. Did not blow out the main drain yet. Closed all suction and return valves. Set multi-port valve to Closed. Drained equipment. Removed filter. Still losing water but at a clearly...

    Pool is half empty overnight!

I can get pictures tomorrow. It makes sense that it shouldn't keep pulling from the main drain after going below the skimmers, but when I saw it running with the water below the skimmers and return jets, I could see and hear that it was blasting spurts of some water and mostly air back into the...

    Pool is half empty overnight!

Given the big difference in water loss with the pump running vs. not running, I was also assuming that this was a pump driven problem, not a simple gravity problem like a liner hole or a leaking light fixture. I can't think of anything to do at this moment but to wait until it stops receding...

    Pool is half empty overnight!

The equipment pad is clearly above the pool level. I had the multi-port valve on filter during the day as I was cleaning it. I had backwashed the day before but it had been running for 24-36 hours in filter mode without a problem before it lost water overnight the next night. I removed the...

    Pool is half empty overnight!

Hi All, I could use some advice on next steps for my pool losing water. I was intending to close the pool yesterday for the winter. I had the pump running for the last 2 days. On Saturday, I cleaned it thoroughly, but didn't get time to blow out the lines and put the cover on. On Sunday, I...

    Great Value Bleach ?

Just went to my local WalMart yesterday to get my monthly supply of bleach. I couldn't find the generic Great Value bleach anywhere. They only had Clorox. I asked the clerk and he said he hasn't seen it recently either. I double-checked the ends of the aisle and found nothing. I checked...
