    To our Aussie friends

Many thanks for your kind words and thoughts. While we have not been affected directly in the Sydney region the mood over here is quite somber as the extent of the losses in Victoria continues to grow. Toll is now 130 and rising... We also have fires around NSW at the moment, but the threat...

please help, very green pool with billion of critters

Bexter, I'm from the Sydney region as well. Great to find a local here! I would also recommend the TF100 test kit. I bought the kit mid last year. Shipping cost was around $40USD. Contact them via email to order. Compared to the $$ that I wasted on chemicals due to bad advice from local pool...

    our AGP nearing completion

Looking good! It will soon be worth the wait, and just in time for summer! Good to see another Aussie on the forum. (I thought the pictures looked very much like an Australian landscape!)

    Algae Wars

Yes, I have been observing CYA going down as well. The Rolachem dosing system is dosing 12.5% liquid chlorine (same stuff I'm shocking with), so no possible CYA source. The unit has been fairly reliable and I have tested at various times of the day. I am quite confident that the FC has remained...

    Algae Wars

Guys, Thanks for all the responses. I value your opinions and advice! Dave, I'll go with your advice and assume we are dealing with MA. I'll go with 5ppm minimum and aim for around 6ppm from now on. (I too want to have one of the thousands of pools in the world that have no algae permanently...

    Algae Wars

Further to my last post, I have now shocked to about 19, and brushed everywhere. Lots of green plumes behind the brush as it moves along the surface. Can still see a lot of dark staining. From past experience these stains mostly go away after a couple of days at shock level. But, as mentioned...

    Algae Wars

I'm not convinced it's black algae... It just comes back too quickly and most of it brushes off fairly easily, generating small green plumes behind the brush.. By the way, the water feature runs with the pool filter. So, while shocking, the water feature runs 24x7. I would have thought that the...

    Algae Wars

Another update... 6 weeks on... The algae wars continue. Over the last 6 weeks, I have had to shock 3 times. FC levels have been 4.0 minimum at all times, and I have been shocking up to 13/14 with pool filter running continuously. Typical test results over the last 6 weeks: FC 4.0 (Minimum) CC...

    PH Testing & Chlorine Neutralizer

I have the TF100 test kit and have been using it now for about 6 weeks. Here's my current readings.. FC: 10 CC: 0 TC: 10 TA: 60 CH: 260 CYA: 45 PH: 7.3 (using the Taylor K-1000 blue kit that comes with the TF100) I also have a PH probe on my Rolachem, currently reading 7.5. I would like to...

    Question about pool brushes....

I think Waste is right. I used to leave my nylon brush out in the sun and it only lasted a few months. The bristles became very brittle and would quickly break off shedding bristles all over the pool.. I now keep my new one out of the sun and it hardly sheds anything...

Any new pools for the slideshow?

Here's our pool. Completed January 2007. Photo taken August 2008. Bit cold at the moment, as it is still winter over here. So, it's more of a backyard water feature than a pool at the moment...

    Algae Wars

Thanks for the tip. My pool lights have colored covers that attach over the top of them. I took them off and found that one of the lights had a heap of algae growing over it. Cleaned it out and hopefully there are no more sources. Only time will tell. Thanks again.

    Algae Wars

I think I was too quick with my verdict... Today I noticed that the green stains were starting to spread at an alarming rate. I tried brushing some of it and there were once again clouds of green coming off the walls! Algae! Water was clear. Immediately got my TF100 and...

    Algae Wars

Thanks for the replies. I forgot to mention in my previous post that I followed the advice on this forum... TF100, shock, brushing etc... I've done so much reading here lately. To those of you that are new around here, read, read, read and follow advice. I'm now looking forward to a (hopefully)...

    Algae Wars

Six weeks since my first post, pool has been crystal clear for about 4 weeks now. My CYA levels are now around 40-50 and the algae is staying away! This is a BIG win for me after months of frustration! Thanks all for you help. I still have some green stains on the walls in places. There are...

    Can't keep FC up

Maybe your CYA test reagent is bad? Just an idea... Try dissolving a small amount of granular CYA in a bucket of water then test the water in the bucket. It's turbidity should be very high, and should read very high CYA (100+) I would think...

    Hello from Sweden

Welcome to TFP! I know you'll find this forum very informative and helpful. I'm from Australia, and I can't say heating is a major problem over here... So do the polar bears go for a swim in your pool? I'm always having trouble with the kangaroos wanting to go for a dip

want off the pool store merry-go-round

Welcome to TFP! Just got off the merry-go-round myself and much happier with my pool after just a few weeks. My wife was commenting recently about how much better the pool looks now.

How to measure high FC level

Birch, Unfortunately you'll need a better test kit that can test for much higher levels. The one recommended around here is the TF100 kit. Check out http://www.troublefreepool.com/category/pool-school/pool_test_kit_comparison for more information. Hope this helps.

Black dots (algae) on the bottom of the pool

May I ask why you do this? Something to do with the type of surface on your pool or something like that?

I am a stranger at the pool store

I'm fairly new around here, and new to pool ownership and maintenance as well. This forum has helped me finally solve problems that no pool shop could help with. Consider the following: If I'm sick, I go to a doctor and I normally get better. If my pet cat is sick, I take him to the vet and he...

    CYA Levels for ORP Controllers

Great information on this website! I've been reading as much as I can to educate myself... I refer to the following URL: http://www.poolcalculator.com/chemistry.html#CYA Quote: "If you are using an ORP controller, keep CYA below 50" I have an ORP based chlorine dosing system. Why should I...

FC Levels - Pool Calculator vs Chlorine / CYA chart

I think some of you may have read my original post wrongly.. Sorry about the ambiguity. I was actually after some direction on the correct FC levels to use. Say I have a CYA level of 50. if I use the pool calculator, the target FC is 8, and the shock FC is 16. However, if I use the Chlorine /...

    What's your current pool temp?

Do you have solar heating by any chance? Here in the warmer parts of Australia some people run the solar heating pump at night to cool the pool water. The pump sends the pool water up onto the cool roof of your house cooling the water rather than heating it!

FC Levels - Pool Calculator vs Chlorine / CYA chart

I just noticed that the pool calculator and chlorine/CYA charts give different target and shock FC levels for various CYA levels. Which once should I go with?
