Cedar on top of my durock

The last thing I needed to do was protect this from the elements, as needed. Since it is not covered, I do get quite a bit of rain, and eventually snow, on this. I also found that no matter how much I hope, there are still gaps around the grill where water can pentrate the cabinets underneath...

Outdoor Island - coming along well.

How did I not know about pop-up outlets? And that stone is gorgeous. At least 2" thick, it seems.

    almost ready!

I like the frame, but am I the only one who doesn't see how that frame became that skinned island? Are these 2 separate projects? Either way, both are much neater and cleaner than my build.

Valley BBQ Build - Start to Finish

That's the way you do it, for sure. Great write up, nice photos, and I am jealous of your tile work. Amazing all the way around.

Outdoor Island - coming along well.

Re: Outdoor Island - what am I missing? The smoker is next on my list. What kind do you have? What do you like about it?

Cedar on top of my durock

OK, stone and rock, done. Gas hooked up and leak checked. Burgers have been grilled. I am going to call this one done. Thanks for all the hints and tips and pointers. Here's hoping I can offer up similar advice to others.

Cedar on top of my durock

OK, I ended up with 1 four foot black pipe coming out of the stub at the house to near the grill, and then a couple of fittings to get the flexible stainless steel appliance hose to connect the final 2 feet from there to the grill. Pipe dope all around. I have it hooked up to the point of...

Cedar on top of my durock

OK, I already have the black pipe outside, and the shutoff valve is on there. This black pipe from the house runs right in to the island, as shown: From there to the inlet on the grill is maybe 4 feet. Do I run black pipe from there to near the grill and use one of the flex hoses you...

Cedar on top of my durock

Thanks, Mongo. That does help. I am not sure what the code is in Ohio, but somehow I would think that flex line would be against code. But if it s not against code, that is exactly what I need, and 3 feet is about dead on for the distance. I actually got a couple of those brass fittings...

Cedar on top of my durock

Once I cut them out, I just glued and screwed two cedar planks across the back of the cut-out pieces at the top and bottom If they were any bigger, I would have done a third diagonal piece as well, but it wasn't needed. Each door is 4 planks wide.

    Intro and Construction Questions

Yes, the self tapping screws work great. You get in to a groove after a while. By the time my 1000th screw was in, it was second nature. :)

Cedar on top of my durock

I have broken down in my updates on the project, but today the granite was installed on top, so I am now left with backspash (which includes the area under the grill as well as under the bartop), and connecting the grill to the NG blackpipe (which is turning out to be the most frustrating part...

    BBQ Grill Island build

What kind of stone are you having installed? I am a couple steps behind you, and seem to hear differing opinions if I need to paper, lathe, and scratch coat for a putting stone veneer on to cement board. I am leaning to the "better safe than sorry" camp and putting it all on. I love your...

    Installing Electric to the Island

Yeah, it might be due to the fact that I am a control freak and I don't trust anybody. I want to know that what he is telling me is what I need to have done, and not what he needs to charge me to do. Having a license doesn't make you honest, necessarily.

    Installing Electric to the Island

It looks that since the island is just outlets (a couple light strings, blender, rotisserie, radio, etc), and everything is in such close proximity, that I can use a GFCI breaker in the box instead, and then just run normal receptacles, with weather covers of course. When I bring in the...

    Installing Electric to the Island

I will be having a guy come to run the line from the breaker to the box (a whopping 6 feet from the basement box, through the wall to the island). But I assume I will be installing and wiring the outlets myself. 3 questions: 1. Do I need to run the line through some conduit inside the...

Cedar on top of my durock

Finished the framing today. The bar overhang will give me a very usable 12" bar top. Next up, getting electric run and outlets in place. And then it's on to skinning the whole thing in 1/2" Durock. Also, I have a patio storage box I built to try and learn how to work with the studs and...

    My Outdoor Kitchen build

How far apart did you put the studs with the l brackets that make up the bar overhang? Seems a lot closer than the other 18" on center.

Cedar on top of my durock

Getting closer. About 1/3 framed. I will be using the corner brackets that I have seen others here use to built the bar overhang. That's the part of this project that worries me the the most, but I am sure it will be fine.

Cedar on top of my durock

That's not a bad idea. I could do a border with the same tile mosaic I will use for the counter top. In the words of the Dude "it really brings the room together."

Cedar on top of my durock

Thanks for 100 ideas on what to do and not do. I am in the process of steel framing, and then skinning with 1/2" durock all around. On top of that, I was hoping to do a combo of stone and cedar. Stone on the outside face, and cedar on the inside. I know I want non-combustible materials for...
