Thanks for the additional info - I wouldn't have known that. I'll keep this in the back pocket for now and start with going back to the Dichlor method for several days. Cheers.

Thanks for the advice. 1) If I were to pick up something like this: Aquarius Pool Water Stabilizer Using the PM app, I'm guessing our current CYA is around 20, target at 40, it's recommending 24g. Does that sound right? Just add, check again in 24 hours? 2) If going the Dichlor route, just...

Am I correct in my understanding that liquid chlorine will not raise the CYA (does not contain cyanuric acid) and as such, the only way to increase the CYA is to go back to the Dichlor? Respectfully, I'm not sure what you mean by ".... I don't like waiting for one because of something else."

New Hot Tub Owner - Taylor Test Kit

Hey all - Hope everyone is doing well. I've been diligently testing for FC daily and adding as per the app. We're at a point where the CYA is reading less than 30 (could be 20 but that's a guess). We've kept the FC in the target range. As a side note, I'll have to add about 10 gallons of water...

Hi @Mdragger88 We're heading off for a 1 week vacation tomorrow. My plan is to turn the tub down to 80 tonight and hit it with the shock target with liquid chlorine. I'm going to add another shock dose to a jar for my neighbour to toss in on Wednesday. Do you think this would be adequate? TIA.

@Mdragger88 Thanks for this. Interesting about the Saltron - never heard of it but have looked it up on Amazon. Definitely worth considering. To clarify, with a slam level of 12 for my CYA of 30, am I just setting my FC target to 12 in the app and dosing accordingly (for when we leave for the...

New Hot Tub Owner - Taylor Test Kit

Hey gents - Hope everyone is doing well. I've been adding liquid chlorine every day (apart from yesterday) and keeping track of drops in FC both in the app log and a spreadsheet (see below). The drop in FC varies as you can see. There can be a drop in say 1.5 from no use and a range of .5 to 3...

Perfect. Just tested at 5.5, added 88mL. We'll soak in an hour and re-test tomorrow to record the shift. I have a spreadsheet going now.

Understood. Well put - thank you. Perfect. I added the first dose of liquid chlorine (68 mL) on Sunday based on a target of 10 We didn't use the tub that day and this evening it was at 5.5ppm FC. Shooting for 10, the app is recommending 88mL of LC. I'll dose about an hour before we go in. I'll...

I did use it the evening, prior. Excellent. So check / adjust pH only when FC is below 10? Good to know. The spa place told us that once you add CH after a fill, it shouldn't ever need to be added as it won't burn off / deteriorate. Would you agree with that? Thanks for the info.

New Hot Tub Owner - Taylor Test Kit

Update (I promise not to do this forever): Now I'm trying to get a sense of degradation over time (using the tub / not using the tub). Yesterday I measured the FC at 19 drops (9.5 ppm) and today after not using the tub for ~24 hours, it came in at 13 drops (6.5ppm). I've yet to add a first dose...

Sounds good. As long as I have my visual in mind as a 'baseline' for 30. The guide says to add 10 to that, do I have that part right? So we'd be at 40 ppm for CYA? Cheers.

OK - new test this morning after adding 16 g of DiChlor last night. FC: 9.5 ppm CC: .5ppm CYA: tested outside, back to the sun and at waist level, TT filled to the top (30), I could still just see the black dot when glancing at the TT. I'm guessing it would have disappeared at 25 if the TT went...

Thanks. I'll have to wait until tomorrow. Dark here now. The guide mentions strong artificial light. Would 'Bright White' LED pot lights suffice?

I dumped the water sample. Okay to do the CYA test using the water with the fresh dose of Dichlor?

OK - I just added another 6g. In total, since last Sunday I've put in 65.2g of Dichlor.

New Hot Tub Owner - Taylor Test Kit

Tested again this evening and it's at 2.5 ppm (still on DiChlor). I didn't bother testing for CYA. As per your recommendation, I added 10g Dichlor (recommendation was 9.7 in the app). I'll test again around the same time tomorrow.

New Hot Tub Owner - Taylor Test Kit

Thanks. So if I can keep it at 6ppm FC (middle of target range), I'm golden? I'm still not clear on what slam level is. In the app, if I set Current Free Chlorine to 6, Current CYA to 30 (guessing this is where I'll get to) and the 'Target Level' for FC to 6, and hit the 'slam' radio button, it...

P.S. the water actually smells / feels good. The chlorine smell before draining was super strong and our skin was dried out.

UPDATE: OK - feeling positive for the first time as I geek out with my chemistry set, here. To recap, I added 7.5g Dichlor last night as per the app. Today, FC measured at 5ppm. Combined took 1 drop so .5ppm (using the 10mL water sample). The buzz is seeing the CYA come up. I filled the TT up...

Thank you. And to clarify, CYA naturally increases as FC increases. There’s nothing else to separately add. We continue adding the DiChlor until we get to 6ppm FC and in the realm of 30-40 CYA.

New Hot Tub Owner - Taylor Test Kit

Hey gents - I want to make sure I'm on the right track before dumping more chemicals in the tub. The CYA reagent came from Amazon today so I took another water sample. CYA test: I could still see the black dot when the test-tube was filled to the 30 mark. FC - it only took 5 drops today (2.5...
