    Motor Problem Again!

Ya, thanks. Another $240 fix. Between that and the bulkhead needing replacing, it's been a pricey pool month.

    Motor Problem Again!

Just an update. Pool guy came out today. Said the motor was making the classic sound of one that had taken a lot of water. A few months ago, the mechanical seal went, and I didn't realize it for quite a while. I only say this because by the time I noticed the leak, water was pouring out of...

    Motor Problem Again!

The new one I bought is the same power (50), but isn't the same size in length and girth. The old one I had was shorter and fatter. They don't make them that size anymore, just longer and thinner. So, it doesn't fit the same in the grooves, or with the arm that locks it into place.

    Motor Problem Again!

Gosh, I have absolutely no idea. I've never made a point to even notice the switch. What does it look like?

    Motor Problem Again!

Thank you! I put the gel just on the threads of the bolt, then screwed it back in. Hopefully I didn't touch any part of the impeller or diffuser while doing so...

    Motor Problem Again!

Hmmm...that could be. I just checked the motor, and it will turn on (after a second delay like it's juicing), but it's not spinning fast enough to move the water. What would cause the switch problem? Could heavy rain, or an odd size cap do it? Sorry if it's a dumb question. When I replaced...

    Motor Problem Again!

OK, thanks, I'll look into that. I don't have a voltage meter, so I'll have the pool guy out for that. He said weeks ago that when the caps start going, it means something else is tweaking. I thought it was from the bolt coming loose. Maybe not.

    Motor Problem Again!

OK, this is the third week in a row I've had problems with the motor. First week, it threw the impeller bolt, causing the cap to fry. Replaced cap, rescrewed bolt. Good for a week. Second week, repeat of above, though this time, I used Loctite on the screw. Today, three weeks to the day...

    Impeller Bolt Keeps Coming Off

Well, I kind of agree, as the screw doesn't seem to serve a purpose. The impeller is so tight anyhow. So, maybe I will just take it off. It's affecting the cap, because when the screw comes off, it as it then jumps around loose, and then causes the motor to seize and stop spinning. The...

    Impeller Bolt Keeps Coming Off

Yes, I mean the reverse threaded impeller screw. No, the impeller is not coming off. Just the screw pops off, which then toasts the cap. Can I find a replacement screw at the hardware store? Or, does it need to be a particular motor replacement part? What do you think about using the...

    Impeller Bolt Keeps Coming Off

I posted last week about the problem I had with the cap going out. And here I am, a week later, SAME problem. It appears that the impeller bolt keeps coming off, which then causes the motor to seize, and the cap to fry. I can't be replacing the cap weekly. My pool guy said I should use red...

    Motor Fried? Or Something Else?

Thank you!! I was owed one, as the lower bulkhead was leaking on the filter last week, and that wasn't something I was going to attempt. Was pricey, so I was annoyed I couldn't figure this out, and would have to shell out again. So glad I kept at it. :)

    Motor Fried? Or Something Else?

FIXED!! :) There was a rock stuck in a groove in the impeller, and some debris stuck in the seal. Cleaned both out, replaced the cap, and viola. Power. I *think* the rock caused the impeller to stop, and then the cap fried from taking all that power, and not being able to flip the motor on...

    Motor Fried? Or Something Else?

LOL. No, no smell at all. I've seen, smelled and heard the motor die before. This is why I thought a clogged impeller is what was causing the motor to not run, since there were no other signs of failure. I just had to spend $200 to have the bulkhead replaced on the filter, so I'm crossing...

    Motor Fried? Or Something Else?

Yes, the shaft moves just fine. I've never seen the impeller bolt come loose before. Makes me wonder if it caused something else to break internally. While I can, and have, taken the motor apart, I don't have the time today, but it's quite possible something is broken. I'll know more when...

    Motor Fried? Or Something Else?

Last night went out to check the equipment, and the infloor motor wasn't running, but was exceptionally hot. This morning I took it apart, hoping it was a clogged impeller. Though there was a small amount of debris, the impeller bolt was entirely loose. Strange. I thought that could have...

Does it matter if my TA is high?

OK, well that's positive. I'm not going to make myself nuts over the TA then. I just had to replace the cell housing (all that weekly hammering to get the cell out doesn't help much!), so the lady was telling me that I needed to lower my TA, so I wouldn't have all that weekly buildup on the...

Does it matter if my TA is high?

My TA is 180. My PH also runs high, usually 7.8 - 8. We have very hard water here in AZ, so in the summer, I am dumping a lot of acid in the pool. Probably a gallon or more a week, and that will get me down in the 7.6 range, but it bumps back up pretty quickly. I can control the PH with...

    Think My SWG is Dying

Is the cell 3 years old? It could have just died. You can tell when the cell is creating chlorine. When the system is on, and the cell is clean, you will see what looks like clouds or water vapor in the cell housing. If you're not seeing that, I'd replace the cell to start.

    Thoughts on layout...

I like the layout in the first elevation the best. A spa is something you will use primarily at night, and for relaxation. So, you want the most dramatic and peaceful views. This generally means not abutting the house. A firepit is where you will entertain, so being close to the house for...

New pool quartzscape pool finish problems

Very cool. :) Definitely keep us posted - I want to hear how things develop. FWIW, I love the shape of your pool, the decking, the backyard...really looks awesome. :)

New pool quartzscape pool finish problems

It's hard to tell from your photos, but it's always a possibility that your builder didn't mix or spray the plaster properly to begin with. If it were me, I'd have another builder (whom you trust from recommendations, etc.) come out to give you a second opinion. If it turns out your builder...

    sand filter question for newbie

Why won't you drain and do a fresh fill? Your water issues sound so extreme. And yes, your filter is working double time, but I suspect that has less to do with your new sand, and more to do with what's in the water (ie. "chunks").

New pool quartzscape pool finish problems

I replastered with a sparkle quartz finish three years ago (not a pebble-tec fan, and this seemed a little jazzier than straight plaster). I do remember as soon as the the water was filling, being disappointed in the finish. It was VERY mottled and blotchy for the first few weeks, and I was...

    sand filter question for newbie

I would have drained my pool if there were ever chunks floating in it. I can't imagine the time and headache to clear and balance that water. I wouldn't backwash so much. I've lived in my house for 9 years, and I've never changed the sand. I couldn't even speculate when ir if it was changed...

Replaced shaft seal, band clamp now leaking

I fixed it. :) Just needed a new o-ring. It seems that any time I have had to open the pump, I end up having to replace the o-ring. It just does not like to be disturbed at all. Anyway, just wanted to update, as sometimes our solution is the easiest one. :)

Replaced shaft seal, band clamp now leaking

I needed to replace the shaft seal on my infloor pump (water was leaking from the motor - yikes!). After I did, the pump worked fine, and after 2 hours, I noticed a tiny, but steady, leak from the band clamp. I retightened the clamp (and yes, I do bang around the band while I do this). Worse...

    Weir door too low

I *think* it should work fine, so long as I do something to prop the door open when there are significant waves in the pool that cause the door to crash hard against the stop. Krazy glue goes only so far... ;) My stop has a lot of ridges in the back (facing the skimmer), so it wouldn't be...

    Weir door too low

OK, since I'm getting ready to go out of town for a while, and didn't have time to start drilling and do the full fix, I took one of those small, round, rubber disks that you put under piano legs, and super-glued it directly to the door. So far, so good. The disk also adds just enough weight...

    Weir door too low

I totally get what you mean. I'm sure I can find something at HD. I'm thinking like the rubber feet I have under the piano... Thank you so much, Mesa. It's an excellent idea, and I can't wait to install it. Meanwhile, I think I might prop the weir open with a broken chop stick just to...
