Should SWG be off when adding acid?

@pjt I was going to update my signature, but it looked like that's a thing of the past since most of the info now shows up on the left side of the post...

Should SWG be off when adding acid?

Hi guys, My pool was completely remodeled in April and I got an SWG (IC40). I started getting some calcium flakes coming out of my returns once a week for the last couple of weeks. I tested my water and my TA has crept up to 100 and pH is noticeably "pinker" than the 8.2 level on the pH test. I...

Lower CYA for no apparent reason

Thanks for your responses. Since I have no water turnover, CYA must be degrading over time. I'll just throw in a floater with a bunch of chlorine pucks to raise CYA for me. I still have half a bucket of those. I only use them when I need to increase CYA.

Lower CYA for no apparent reason

I use TF-100 test kit. Two months ago my CYA was 60. Today it is down to less than 20. I filled the CYA test tube to the top and the water is cloudy, but I can still see the black dot. I measured a second time with the same result. This is confusing because as far as I know CYA doesn't decrease...

Replacement anti-siphon valve on fill line

Could you please post a link to where I can see and buy one of these backflow valves, like on Amazon or Home Depot? I don't know what to search for, so it would be great if you can give me an example. Thanks.

Replacement anti-siphon valve on fill line

Hi, I need to replace this anti-siphon valve on my pool fill line. This valve leaks out of every possible location when turned on: It looks like a manual sprinkler valve with the handle replaced for easier turning. Is this what I should do - buy a new sprinkler valve and replace the handle...

DE draining back to pool with pump off

Thanks for your response! I was just surprised to see this because I was used to grids being fully covered in the old filter. I wonder if the the bottom 3/4 of DE gets washed off because return plumbing in the new filter is much higher than in the old filter. So when I open the air bleeder on...

DE draining back to pool with pump off

Hi, I just replaced my old 36 sq. ft. DE filter with a new 48 sq. ft. filter. I kept the same 3/4 HP Hayward Max-Flo pump, but replaced all of the plumbing. I've got a couple of questions, but here are the pictures of the old and the new: Question 1: When I used to open the old filter for...

Find electrician or do it myself?

Do you have any recommendation for finding a good pool electrician? I'm in Los Angeles county.

Find electrician or do it myself?

Hi, I replaced my pool equipment "pad" and filter. In the process, I tore out electrical connections because conduits were in really bad shape. I was planning to fix it myself - all I need is the pump, timer, and the pool light. But when I posted on another forum, they noted many problems with...

    Mistery pipe

I have a Kreepy Krauly classic. Do you think it's going to work?

    Mistery pipe

Hi, I'm almost done with installing the new filter and re-plumbing everything. The filter is not completely hooked up yet, but the more difficult part of the plumbing is done. I got rid of the copper piece of the pipe that I originally posted about, and instead connected the PVC portion to...

    Intermatic timer burned out

Well, I have a single speed 3/4 HP Hayward pump. It's probably best for now to just get a direct replacement for the timer and worry about variable speed when this pump breaks down... So this one looks like what I need, right? http://www.homedepot.com/p/Intermatic-4 ... Yg0_rWsh8E

    Intermatic timer burned out

The pop and smoke was definitely in the timer. When I put in the new timer, I'll ground the pump. My main concern was that I was completely misunderstanding how things work and I don't want to damage the new timer. Since I'm disconnecting the heater, my setup is going to even simpler. Plus I'm...

    Intermatic timer burned out

Here's a fuller picture. You can see the pump sitting on the left side of the new concrete slab that I posted about a couple of weeks ago. There is a flexible conduit connected to the back of the pump, and you can see it come up to the bottom of the timer, where the two black wires go into it...

    Intermatic timer burned out

Hi, I'm replacing my old pool filter, which returned water through an old Leslie's Coppertherm heater. I've never used the heater and it was filled with all kinds of dry leaves and dirt. So before plumbing in the new filter, I decided to test if the heater works and either connect it to the...

    Mistery pipe

Thanks for the link, 4knights. Man, that's a lot of pipes in that trench! Regarding the gas line, I was thinking of calling the gas company and telling them that I need to disconnect my pool heater and that the gas line leading to it is rusty (which it is). If they send someone out, I can ask...

    Mistery pipe

@jblizzle I don't think it's feasible to get rid of all copper pipe because some of it is under the slab, but I can definitely replace whatever I can get to. I'm not sure what you mean by water pipes. I don't think I have any water supply lines in that area - it's all pool plumbing, pool...

    Mistery pipe

Thanks! Just "un-squashed" the pipe and stuck a water hose in the vac port. Water came right out of the pipe. Looks clean. When I re-plumb this, do you think I can use schedule 40 PVC or is there a reason they used copper? PVC is just easier to work with for me. Are there any other plumbing...

    Mistery pipe

JohnT, I think you are right on the money. Looks like it goes to a vacuum port (the one in the middle of the picture below). I just bought a Kreepy Krauly within the last 4 weeks and I've used it by attaching to the skimmer using a diverter valve. I currently have no valves anywhere else that...

    Mistery pipe

Hi everyone, I'm replacing my old pool filter. There is this closed (squashed) vertical copper pipe near the return pipe. Nothing was connected to it. It continues for several feet, then connects to a PVC pipe and goes under the slab. Does anyone know what it is? Could it be connected to sewer...
