    Freeze/thaw proof waterline tile sources?

I've seen problems with tiles popping off. I started at TPF since I own a pool in Los Angeles, but right now I'm designing pools in Nashville as part of an apartment building. Here in LA I've seen tiles popping off not due to freezing but, as a GC told me, due to the fabric mesh...

    Freeze/thaw proof waterline tile sources?

Hi, we're looking for sources for freeze/thaw proof waterline tile for an apartment complex pool in Nashville that is under construction. We've been told that Oceanside Glass (Carlsbad, CA) and Classic Pool Tile (Atlanta, GA) work in Nashville. Any other sources we might look at the can...

Stains from dirt getting in pool

Quick update and request for advice here... I used the stainless steel brush with no luck. The stain is just too stubborn. Someone recommended putting down a layer of chlorine granules on the effected areas and letting it sit for a while to remove the stain. I did notice that wherever I had put...

Stains from dirt getting in pool

Thank you. That's exactly what I need. That will take the stain off in a jiffy. I woke up this morning and thought, "aluminum". Glad to know they do them in stainless. I appreciate your help.

Stains from dirt getting in pool

Okay. Will do. Thanks. If elevating the chlorine levels doesn't work (it's pretty stubborn staining), is there any issue with using a hard bristle wood block scrub brush? Something non ferrous.

Stains from dirt getting in pool

Okay... long delay there. I finally got around to buying a tri-chlor puck from Lowe's. It did lighten the stain but only after it was left there overnight. Should I continue to the vitamin C test or is it conclusive with the tri-chlor? Thanks.

Are these pool pipes deep enough??

To the inside edge of coping it is 22'-8" x 12'-0". The coping is 1'-2" on all sides. Pool is average 5 feet deep. It feels just fine in our urban site in Los Angeles. Easy to heat in the summer. Actually, with a grey pool cover, it averages about 78 degrees in the summer with no heating. I...

Are these pool pipes deep enough??

Yes... I wish there was a way to cut the pipe and quickly install a riser pipe so the outlet is above the water level. Or plug the skimmer, returns and the pipe that goes through the salt water cell. That sits up a few feet higher than the water level. I hate to throw away 20% of my water in a...

Are these pool pipes deep enough??

There is only room to put a few inches of compacted dirt and sand/gravel/stepping stones on top. Not a lot of depth for all that. You can see the broken up pavers that were removed in the background of the image. For some reason, they poured the pavers 8" thick right on top of the PVC pipes. The...

Are these pool pipes deep enough??

We put in a new deck and took out some of the concrete pavers that used to surround parts of the pool. After jackhammering the pavers out, we discovered that the pool pipes sit about 10" below the top of coping (the smaller PVC pipes are sprinklers). Thankfully my construction helpers were very...

Stains from dirt getting in pool

Chris B., Thanks so much for the offer. I'd love to take you up on it but I am absolutely slammed at work right now, so Downey is a bit far for me. The $30 for pucks here in Culver City might be cheaper than the gas to Downey. Once I'm done testing, I'll let you know and maybe you could come...

Stains from dirt getting in pool

I'm in Culver City. I don't know any neighbors with a pool or I would ask them.

Stains from dirt getting in pool

Is there a place I can order less than $30 of tri-chlor pucks? My local supply places only have 5 gallon buckets for $30 or 10 gallon for $63. Or am I being too cheap:confused:

Stains from dirt getting in pool

Thanks Dave S. I will try the tri-chlor puck and vitamin C and post back. Thanks again.

Stains from dirt getting in pool

I am assuming it is dirt since the stain pattern matches the pattern of the intrusion of dirty water. I will try the triclor and aspirin to test what the stain is. Thanks. Any other thoughts are appreciated.

Stains from dirt getting in pool

The previous owner planted turf to the edge of the coping, but he planted it too high. Runoff from the sprinklers went into the pool. There are now brownish stains in two corners of the pool floor where dirt-laden water entered. The stains are about 3 feet wide by 6 feet long. I am assuming...

    Reach-in pool skimmer?

I may have resolved this question. A colleague directed me to the "Waterway Front Access Model 510-1500". It is a spa filter but I believe it can be used for a pool. I'll know more when I speak to the manufacturer tomorrow.

    Reach-in pool skimmer?

I hope I have the name right... I am looking for a reach-in pool skimmer that has no visible lid on the coping or deck near the pool. I am working on designing a new pool that is semi-above ground. It is a gunite pool but 30 inches of it are above grade. We want a skimmer that will fit within a...

    Water line tile grout?

Doing some more research in the office I found a spec from a pool consultant... this seems like a pretty good spec. The construction budget for the house is about $8 million (about $125k) for the pool, so money is not a problem. We just want the most bulletproof spec money can buy. Thanks.

    Water line tile grout?

Hello TFP members, I am an architect designing a new single-family residence with a pool in Los Angeles and would like to know what grout people are using for the water line tile. We have had mosaic tile come loose in the past on some projects and are looking for the best water line tile grout...

    "Cadillac" of water sanitization systems?

Thanks for the responses. Beadedbiker: you are describing a system similar to what we use. Almost all Pentair equipment often linked to a Jandy controller. I will research the acid injector - this seems like a good addition to the system. Bama Rambler: why oversize the system by 1 1/2 to 3...

    "Cadillac" of water sanitization systems?

By "anything else" I believe you mean an SWG system, correct? I like the one I have at home and find it to be low maintenance, which I do myself. The house/pool being designed is for folks with a small support staff so they definitely won't be maintaining their water or even ever see the...

    "Cadillac" of water sanitization systems?

Hello TFPers, I am an architect working in Los Angeles on a new single family residence with a 35,000 gallon pool being planned. Our client wants to know what is the current "cadillac" of pool water sanitation systems? I am quite familiar with SWG systems but I am not sure what the most advanced...

    D.E. Filter cleaning question

Just gave it a try and it worked fine. You are right, the duct tape did not work, but the pool equipment room had a section of the sill plate removed and the floor sloped to an area drain just past the wall. I guess it was "designed" to backwash the filter in the room and just have it drain out...

    D.E. Filter cleaning question

Thanks Richard320. It sounds like there is some work to do with a reducer/coupler and some PVC solvent. Wish me luck!

    D.E. Filter cleaning question

Thank you frustratedpoolmom and Richard320 for the responses. The filter was cleaned and the cartridges were replaced by a pool guy about 18 months ago when we moved in, that much I know. I think I will attempt to do a simple backwash and see how that goes. Bought the DE today. Richard320: I...
