Running pH 7.8-8.0 vs chasing the acid dragon.

I would say to start with some good photos showing the area of concern. Thanks for the acknowledgment, it's good to know I'm not entirely off base here. :) Sometimes just a fresh set of eyes, a clear head that has had the opportunity to decompress and reset, and fresh new ideas can make all...

Running pH 7.8-8.0 vs chasing the acid dragon.

My gears are turning here, wondering why the op is getting such a persistent pH rise with no SWCG and long since cured plaster. Could it possibly be somewhere in the plumbing that there occurs a high rate of turbulent water due to a minor constriction, or a wacky elbow setup, or tee, or even a...

Will this kit get me going?

Who slaves over a sink with pool tests? ;) I do it pool side and just let it spill out onto the grass. Wham, bang, done. SWEET! :D Much prettier outside too. Best purchase I forced myself to make. Keeps my sanity. HEHE The syringe is a good idea though. In fact, why not just use a syringe...

TA over 300, should I worry?

Dktexas, BTW, welcome to TFP! What sort of test kit do you have, and have you been reading pool school here? I'd say that fine white cloud you had before the drain and fill, was algae. Algae will generally pass through a filter while still alive. You should definitely work to get...

    Ph Preference

JohnN, Yes, good idea. I was going to suggest you start a thread, as maybe the minds here can come up with a reason as to your odd downward drift. As for this thread, I just keep my pH in range, 7.2-7.8, which requires ZERO work on my part. It just slooowwwly drifts up and then finds a happy...

    Pool Sizes

If that were the case, then why would OnBalance not have stated that in his original thread? As I didn't glean that from his post. He uses the word "precisely", and even states a different weight for different pool volume ranges. He doesn't say, pick an amount desired to raise your TA. I would...

    Ph Preference

Bahaha, right?? :sly::what::D Just about! I think ma is somewhere around 1.5-1.9 pH. Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk 2 It's definitely your well water. Solar cover isn't going to lower pH, but keep it more stable than anything. Although I'm not sure, aside from outgassing as the main...

Video showing how clear your pool can be!

Aren't those Intex cartridge filters a blast? Try adding d.e. alternative cellulose powder, prepare for many cycles. Also 2 pairs of nylons over the cartridge. Lastly, don't clean it as much, or as well each time... filters better. :D Sand filter up and running soon, and GOOD RIDDANCE! to this...

Pride is such a viciously hungry god, isn't it? So so very very sad. :/ I'll pray for your friend. :) jblizzle, I can't afford to contribute money at this stage in my life, so instead, I try to help out as much as I can, giving back with the knowledge I have so gratefully learned here from...

Video showing how clear your pool can be!

Augie56, I would say you're losing about 1.5-2ppm FC per day, and Kris77 is losing about 2.5ppm per day. The OP either has a lower cya, as you're higher than most here, but well within recommended levels, or has more bather load, like you suspected. I'd say you're both doing REALLY GOOD on...

CYA going up way too fast on puck pools

I should point out that your minimum FC level at 60ppm cya, is 5ppm, not the 2-4ppm FC that you said you are maintaining in your original post. You're asking for an algae bloom, especially if you have no reserve FC for bather load, UV consumption, etc.. Sounds like a classic case of a...

Got pool dialed in, but going on vacation

I agree with crimsondr, bring it to shock levels, cover it with an opaque cover, and call it a day... week+. This is exactly what I have done while on vacation. Works great! I understand it's difficult to cover your pool, could you maybe post pictures and we can possibly come up with some...

    Sand filter questions

That makes perfect sense gtemkin, thanks a million!! I love this place! :D :D :D  As for the lateral, I wasn't aware of the whole "one sided" lateral design possibility. I can tell you that the mold flaws, causing blockage of the slits in the lats, were all the way around, and more...

    Pool Sizes

Hilton, I know the test method for volume calculation using TA, says to add PRECISELY 10lbs of sodium bi-carb for pools over 30k gal. You state you added 5 kilos, which converts to just over 11 lbs (11.0231131), not "precisely 10 lbs". Is this number and measurement of your chemical addition...

pH Test More Yellow Than Red

Re: Ph Preference I'm assuming it's more yellow than 7.2/7.0 on the color comparator? Are you using the R-0014/R-0004 phenol red pH reagent, and not OTO? Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk 2

Bigger pump on Intex sand filter

I would check those silly plastic grates they molded into the inlet and return fittings on the pool wall. They restrict flow, and when they get clogged, they cause air leaks to occur at the hose couplings due to the increased suction pressure of the restriction. Honestly, I Dremel'd mine...

    Sand filter questions

I took apart the lateral assembly on my Pentair Meteor to clean all the stuck sand in the laterals... STUPID! Zeo Sand, with a dental pick. They were all but completely clogged with tiny sand bits embedded in the lats. I'm now reassembling the laterals into their threaded base. Q: Do I need...

Advice needed - Is this aglae? Pics & #'s included

BTW, to save yourself reagent when SLAMing that high, use a 5ml sample where one drop equals 1ppm FC. Also, you should be able to successfully test with one BIG HEAPING scoop. This should be enough, even at your FC. At least try and see. Worst case, a healthy heaping scoop, plus a tiny nible of...

Advice needed - Is this aglae? Pics & #'s included

That totally looks like the fine dirt that the Intex filter WILL NOT clear. :/ I know this 1st hand. You should look into a Pool Blaster vac. I don't personally use one, but I'd say they seem to be the best of all the handheld vacs I researched before I got my Pool Rover Jr. Salt is no...

All is well, but a little cloudy

It's totally a filtration issue, what, without knowing precise numbers for lack of the FAS-DPD test. Without that kit, technically you should be keeping it at shock levels till the water is clear, but honestly that gets pretty stupid expensive with an Intex filter, as I have seek it take a week...

Unexplained FC Consumption - SOLVED - although the Mystery Remains

Re: Unexplained FC Consumption (updated title) Chemgeek's post #198 in that thread indicates that low borates, below 30ppm, can be food for algae, somewhat like phosphates. But is irrelevant in a properly chlorinated pool. So they do not directly result in algae growth. At and above around...
