Cold front coming = Frozen chemicals

They must be older units. More recently, they put such little refrigerant in them, that if the temperature drops below 53F, the compressor just dry-cycles, as the small amount of liquid refrigerant in the system is all pooled in the condenser. It's a serious problem, for anyone who keeps newer...

Thanks for posting that. I just finished watching the entire video, which was very interesting. Took a bit of a dark turn just before the 12:00 mark, but that's reality.

Cold front coming = Frozen chemicals

I'm pretty friendly with a guy from Fairbanks AK, and actually one of my son's three piano teachers is temporarily stationed there (military), as well. It's so cold that car batteries and transmission fluid freeze solid, so you need to either park your vehicles in heated buildings, or set...

Cold front coming = Frozen chemicals

Well, I got out to the chemical cabinet before sunset, which thankfully is getting a little later each day now. There was no chlorine, I remember now I dumped the last two gallons on-hand into the pool before closing. There was one gallon of RV antifreeze, one gallon of 31% muriatic, and...

Cold front coming = Frozen chemicals

Back before I heated my garage, I found that the temperature was highly dependent on how often we drove the vehicles stored in each garage. The vehicles themselves come back from each trip with a cold body and chassis, which initially makes the garage feel cold when standing near the vehicle...

Cold front coming = Frozen chemicals

Main concern would be rupturing the bottle and having a mess, likely not much more. And I just came in from 90 minutes of clearing snow, and realized I forgot to dig out and check the chemical cupboard. Oops... not going back out now, it's quarter 'till midnight and I have an early meeting.

Cold front coming = Frozen chemicals

Well, either way, I'd better make sure there's none left outside. My little storage bin probably stays a few degrees warmer than the overnight low, but not much. We were showing several mornings of 3 - 4 F in this morning's forecast, but now they've updated that to 6 - 8 F. Of course, the...

Cold front coming = Frozen chemicals

I heat my garages to 55F, due to refrigerators and freezers malfunctioning much below that, so no issue in there. I’m wondering why Google returned 17F as the freezing point at 10% chlorine, the 7F number makes more sense, otherwise I’d have had more trouble in past years. This will be the...

Cold front coming = Frozen chemicals

I see the local forecast for this week is for a bunch of 3F - 4F mornings, and at least a few days with highs in the teens. So a reminder to those in the northeast... check your chemical storage! I know 31% Muriatic won't freeze above -80F, but I think 10% Chlorine is only good down to +19F...

    1st year closing with SWG

Pool was closed on Saturday. We had 29F this morning, so it was time. Water was holding 60F in the several days prior to closing. I decided to take all of the SWG components and plumbing and put it into a patio storage chest that's used for the pool cover in summer. It's dry and out of the...

I cannot find a single recommendation for dosing amount of PQ60 at closing. It’s not on the bottle, and Google just says follow bottle. How many oz per gallon?

    1st year closing with SWG

I guess I don't follow the logic that if PQ60 lowers FC, you should only do it when FC is already lower. If it knocks FC down by a greater amount when FC is high, seems like FC will just converge closer to the same value, either way. We have been at 35F - 36F the last several mornings, so I do...

    1st year closing with SWG

I followed this, without really second-guessing it. But my current drop of 0.2 ppm per day, we'll be singing Christmas carols before my FC drops to anywhere near half-SLAM. Totally my fault, not blaming Mdragger. We are already seeing pretty consistent daily lows in the mid-30's, so I guess...

    1st year closing with SWG

I find it difficult to look at, my eyes just don't adjust so well to light anymore. But I think the bigger problem for me was consistency, daylight for one test and then the speedstir light for the next. Whichever you prefer, I think you need to just stick to the same conditions everytime...

I took a measurement a little after sunset last night, for OCLT, and got 7.0 ppm. I actually went the extra mile and used the 25 mL (±0.2 ppm) test, whereas I normally just use the 10 mL (±0.5 ppm) test. I did find using the light on the speedstir a little challenging, very hard on eyes...

    1st year closing with SWG

Wind is zero this morning, so I quick threw the vacuum into the pool. If wind is still zero when that's done, I'm going to move forward with covering the thing today. Despite the pool being semi-in-ground, the cover is the bead lock type that sits on the surface of the water, like an above...

    1st year closing with SWG

Thanks! I have a bottle of polyquat 60 arriving Monday, and water has been hovering in mid-60's the last few days, with overnight lows in the upper 30's here this week. So, we should be ready to close one day next week. Good thing, leaf load is getting troublesome. I'm emptying...

I've never had to SLAM my pool, I just keep chlorine in the recommended range from Pool Math. You can see my logs, if interested. So, what's "half SLAM" really mean, if adding polyquat 60? If my recommended range is 3.0 - 9.0, and the SLAM toggle in Pool Math suggests 22, should I go to 11ppm...

    Leaves

I like it! That might be a good option for keeping the pool open during leaf or pollen fall (maybe good for spring use). However, I've been convinced to just get the cover on the pool this week, and leave the pumps and chlorinator running under the cover until it's cool enough to shut down...

Yes, I have a solid cover, and I like the sound of your procedure. I was envisioning trying to get the Dang cover off at Halloween, when it's full of leaves and water, and thinking that sounded pretty miserable. But if you never actually take the cover off, that's even better. We usually...

    1st year closing with SWG

Wow... busy weekend. Sorry for the slow reply. I'm going to wait until water temp is below 65F to close. I'm looking for some better solutions to deal with the massive leaf fall we see this time of year, as keeping up with the skimmer basket is becoming somewhat a full-time job, lest it get...

    Leaves

Looks like that design just reject the leaves, so they eventually sink to the bottom? Maybe a good option for going out of town, but otherwise the opposite of what I think most would want. We want to capture the leaves while they're on the surface, to avoid having to scrape the off the bottom.

    Leaves

My skimmer gets totally jammed up with leaves this time of year, and it’s just not possible to keep up with it on windy days. I can empty it several times per day, but it will still jam up overnight. I've had the standard basket get sucked down inside the skimmer housing a few times. Broke a...

    1st year closing with SWG

Did a conversion to TFP method and SWG this year, and wondering two things: 1. Has anyone posted a closing procedure, with regard to TFP methods and SWG? I'm assuming that loading up with 90-day algea blocker and stain and scale remover, as my pool company recommended in years past, is not...

    aeration vs. "pH Up"

Definitely. Heck, between this SWCG and my automatic irrigation system, I just about don't know what to do with myself all day, anymore. :D
