Thinking about replacing my pump to a VS pump

Thanks for your response! Yes I do have an Intermatic timer. I also have a spa booster pump. Hypothetically speaking if used together with MaxFlo VS would that help the spa?

Thinking about replacing my pump to a VS pump

Hi everyone, I am thinking about the idea of replacing my current single speed Pentair Whisperflo 1HP to a variable speed pump in order to cut down electricity bill, since the utility company has an $200 incentive for a VS pump. I currently have my eye on Hayward MaxFlo VS for its low price...

Algae; not sure what to do

May I please ask a related question here? Does it mean it is not safe to put your face in the water when FC is greater than shock level? I did that multiple times while shocking my pool. I yet to clean my lights. Shall I let FC come down and then do that? Thank you!

    newbie struggle with mustard algae

Swampwoman, thank you so much for following my process and giving me many thoughtful suggestions. I will keep shocking and be more careful not to let FC drop below 17. Last time, I ended the shock process too soon and returned to normal FC level. That's when the algae came back. This time I am...

    newbie struggle with mustard algae

OK. I got into the water and tried trichlor pucks at different spots, each for more than 1 minute. I have to say it did not work. Shall I stop shocking at this point?

I did this again but the result is still not obvious to me. It seems to be lightened a bit, but not much. I will get into the water later today and try to observe more closely.

    newbie struggle with mustard algae

Here is some new information which I think might be relevant. I have a spa that got similar yellow stains. The stains in the spa behaved the same as the ones in the pool: up till today, three days of shocking and brushing, only lightened but did not go away completely. This morning, I...

I did last time. It seemed to be lightened but did not go away. Let me do it again though. How long am I supposed to hold it? I held it for a minute last time.

    newbie struggle with mustard algae

We bought Vitamine C tablets today and did the test suggested by swampwoman. The VC tablet did not change the stain. Also, the stains did not get worse with high FC, on the contrary, it got worse when FC was lower, say, below 4. And we use municiple water, not well water. I tend to rule iron...

    newbie struggle with mustard algae

8/24 dusk. fc is 5.5?cc?0.5?ph is 7.6, cya is 40. We added 2 gallons of 10% liquid chlorine and 1 gallon of 14.5% muratic acid . Brushed walls and floor (some yellow dusts came off. ) Turned the pump on. Tested again at 10:30pm ? fc is 17. 8/25 around 9am, FC=17 and CC<0.5. The water itself is...

    newbie struggle with mustard algae

We do not have Vitamin C tablet. We tried using lemon slices, compared the result to chlorine tablet. The result is inconclusive. Both seemed to lighten the stain but neither made it disappear. From my reading, only acid wash would get rid of the iron stain. Our plaster is quite old and might...

We tested pH before we shocked. The original FC level was 5.5. This morning (8/25) around 9am, FC=17 and CC<0.5. The water itself is clear, but the yellow stains on walls and floor remained. Does it mean we passed the overnight chlorine loss test and the CC criterion, but not the 3rd...

    newbie struggle with mustard algae

Thanks for your reply. The cya is 40. We added the acid because pool school says to keep ph at the lower side (7.2-7.4) while shocking and we have high ch, high TA, and scaling.

    newbie struggle with mustard algae

My pool has a recurring mustard algae problem. I have done an 80% drain and fill to lower the cya. I shocked after the fill. My pool looked much better afterwards. But the algae keeps coming back. I know I need to be more thorough. So I am starting again. I really want to do it right this time...

    newbie struggle with mustard algae

Re: Before and During Pics I might be able to access a microscope. How to tell the difference? I doubt it would be pollen though. We do not seem to have yellow pollen around this area. It is probably algae. I did shock at mustard algae level last time (FC=24). The "dust" were gone before I...

    newbie struggle with mustard algae

Re: Before and During Pics I did go through the algae shock process after the refill. Please see this thread. I can do it again and I think I should. But the thing is, I can't seem to be able to make the stain disappear even at algae shock chlorine level and diligent wire brushing. I tried spot...

    Skimlite pole stuck

I recently bought this skimlite pole. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008ESZVXG/ It is recommended here but it's not working well for me. The parts would become loose or stuck now and then. Today it's stuck again and I just couldn't unlock it to adjust the length. I simply twist the pole at...

Remaining problems As you can see, the yellow scaling has faded significantly, but still there. I will try the low pH, low TA, plus frequent wire brushing treatment. More to learn.
