After checking with him I did put in the sequestrant. Thanks for the advice. He also said the green water is because the water isn't circulating and it should clear after the filter system is on for a couple of hours and the chemistry gets balanced.

I will double check the estimated volume using the usual dimensional formula. With pool empty I did discover it's 8 ft deep instead of 9 that I was told by previous owner.

I decided to test the water coming from the softening system and got these results... pH - 7.2 TA - 150 CH - 0 (adding 11L at step 3 turned the water blue, not red) So the results reported above must be accurate from the softener bypass.

The same PB said they use Startup Tech. This product appears to have the same goals as the bicarb startup. The PB said they see almost no plaster dust. Maybe this would be a good alternative.
