Winterizing – need to lower water level?

The returns are a good 2+ feet below the tile line and in 37 years we've never dropped the water level that low for winterization. I was just curious why Sylvan said lower the level 8" below the tile line but I was never told why that amount. I had assumed it was to prevent water in the lines...

Winterizing – need to lower water level?

We're in east PA and get ice strong enough to walk on.

Winterizing – need to lower water level?

We’ll be winterizing the pool soon and I was told years ago to lower the water level 8” below the tile line. I’ve been hearing conflicting information about this and want to know if it lowering the water is necessary. We get freezing temperatures.

    I used the original gasket.

    Peeing in the pool poll.

They need to invent a chemical additive that will produce a giant green cloud around the pee-er as it neutralizes and breaks down the urine.

    Sylvan pool light fell out...

The light has finally been repaired. After many unsuccessful attempts to putty, epoxy, etc. the light underwater with mask and fins we finally decided to drain the pool down enough to get at the niche dry. Being within a month or less of winterizing this was a tough decision but anyway we took...

    Sylvan pool light fell out...

I researched the plumbers putty and it starts to deteriorate after 7 years so I’m leaning towards a “tack weld” using a small dab of A+B Epoxy Putty. Later if the lights need replacing it should easily pry loose.

Deep end floor drain cover missing

It’s from a Sylvan pool, a plastic hubcap / frisbee shaped disk 7 1/8” in diameter, the two screw holes are 5” apart, writing on the front says “Sylvan Pools Engineered For Care Free Swimming”. No part numbers or anything else and the old screws are rusted in place minus the heads. The Hayward...

Deep end floor drain cover missing

I was thinking of epoxying a heavy weight underneath the bottom part of the cover to weight it down and in place but the Hayward Pool vac might pull at it. If the weight were heavy enough it wouldn't matter. Just thinking out loud.

Deep end floor drain cover missing

We actually have the cover except somebody had screwed it in with non-waterproof screws and after the screws rusted the cover came loose. Is there any way to secure the drain cover in place without using screws?

    Sylvan pool light fell out...

Plumbers Putty sounds like it will be the quickest and easiest solution. Will the plumbers putty have enough "stick" to be applied underwater? I'm assuming a bead of about 2"-3" at the top part of the light will be enough to do the trick. I'm envisioning an RTV like sticky substance that can be...

    Sylvan pool light fell out...

There’s a notch on the light assembly at the very top and this may have been where a screw went and this would make sense. Looking at a picture of the niche from another thread there is a place at 12 o’clock where a screw would go. I did find a couple of small sheet metal Phillips head screws...

    Sylvan pool light fell out...

The Sylvan pool light I just spent an inordinate amount of time replacing the two halogen bulbs suddenly and unexpectedly fell out of its niche this morning. The length of supplied electric cable is just long enough for it to rest comfortably on the deepend pool floor without dangling by the...

    Leaking pool light suspected

It’s been over 3 weeks since I last added water to the pool and I can say now with certainty that the leak has been repaired. We’ve lost almost as much water in the span of over 3 weeks that we used to lose every 4 days.

Please Help! Frogs in the Pool!

Not really a solution but I’ve noticed the frogs, about 6 or so, immediately vacate the water whenever I go in for a swim. During the day they tend to be scarce and hiding in nearby shrubbery and then at night they “take over” the pool like VC infiltrators. Took a swim tonight and they got out...

Pool light for old sylvan pool

Found 2 replacement bulbs :goodjob: , Bulbrite XP Standard Base E26, 250W, UV Stop, Clear at $9.00 each. Part number on box “Q250CL/EDT”. Installed the bulbs, got my mask and fins on and did a Lloyd Bridges operation to reinstall the assembly back in the niche and it just popped right back in...

Pool light for old sylvan pool

I’ll have to check the diameter measurement but the depth looks like an easy fit. If we can’t find any bulbs we may have go the replace the entire light route but that is a last resort and we may just button up the non working light “as is” minus the bulbs and do without. We’re still looking...

Pool light for old sylvan pool

Any ideas where I could pick up a couple 250W bulbs? So far no luck with Lowes or Home Depot and the Leslie website description sounds close but doesn’t have measurements or a photo. The bulbs can’t be longer then 5 ½” or they’ll be too big to screw in.

Pool light for old sylvan pool

The rubber gasket is okay. Just need the screws and 2 bulbs. Leslie website claims they have the bulbs but we need to check the length to make sure they will fit. The screws should be pretty standard but you never know.

    Leaking pool light suspected

After 48 hours we’ve only lost about 3/8” of water and I’m attributing this to normal evaporation combined with wind and swimming the past few days. Next task is to replace the 2 pool light bulbs.

Pool light for old sylvan pool

I plugged the hole where the main electrical cable goes through and after 48 hours the water level has dropped ~ 3/8” and I attribute that to normal evaporation. Before we would lose almost an inch overnight. Doing this in the water was no easy task. The fixture had some water in it and...

    Leaking pool light suspected

Back in the water again and discovered that by wiggling the light with two fingers it just pops right out. No tools needed. It looks exactly like the Sylvan light in the pictures in this thread pool-light-for-old-sylvan-pool-t45374.html . I used a big wad of epoxy putty to seal the gap around...

    Leaking pool light suspected

The light itself doesn’t turn on and trips the GFI which happens to be the switch we use for on/off. I’m suspecting some type of wiring corrosion assuming a blown light bulb itself isn’t enough to trip the GFI. The bulb has never been changed and we’ve never removed the light from the niche so...

Pool light for old sylvan pool

How did you remove the light from the niche? I have a similar Sylvan pool light that has a vertical notch at 12 o’clock just like the light in your picture, do you just pry with a flat blade screwdriver? I’m assuming that the light will just snap back into place in the niche. We’ve never removed...

Staying on topic regarding disposing of old pool chemicals what is the recommended way to get rid of old chlor-tabs? I also have a half bucket of powdered dry chlorine now caked and all of it unusable.

    Leaking pool light suspected

Our Sylvan in ground pool leaks about an inch of water per day and after fixing and ruling out several other possibilities we believe the leak to be in the recessed Sylvan light fixture. I saw some pictures of the Sylvan light in another thread and was wondering if the leak is determined to be...

Please Help! Frogs in the Pool!

We have frogs too. After opening the pool, which had been closed for 6 years (another story), I thought that they wouldn’t like the fresh water and chlorine either but they don’t seem to mind. I shock the pool once a week with powdered chlorine and that doesn’t seem to faze them. They are...
