I was wanting to do the same thing and I wish I still had my over the wall skimmer that came with pool because it had the barb fitting that attaches to the hose of the skimmer that I would of used but unfortunately I gave it way to my brother in law for his pool.

It might actually be nice to have the original inlet too. I know sometimes when I am backwashing my filter I loose suction if I do it very much because of my water level getting to low in skimmer.

Your Chlorine is depleting so fast probably because of your CYA level being to low. I was adding a gallon of bleach pretty much daily to keep any chlorine in mine until I got my CYA level up there it is kinda like a sun block for your chlorine.

Yes I am talking about the one in the skimmer. It does have a weir/door that moves back and forth but it does not seal just a hard flapper that can move from inside the bskimmer to outside into the pool.
