    PH and cya woes

You've just described my pool exactly. From what I've gathered here, these things are perfectly normal. High TA from my fill water leads to rising pH and weekly additions of about a gallon of MA. CYA does slowly break down over time; I seem to need about 1 puck per week (~5ppm/mo) to keep up...

Vermiculite cracking/settling along the bottom edge

So the interesting thing is those aren't divots... they're actually raised. In other words, they're the only areas that /didn't/ settle or compress about 3/4" lower over time... You can kind of see the dark line between the groups of raised patches, which is actually the vertical edge of the...

    Advice on testing device

These two points, combined with my own experience (Pool store says CYA=115, reality is CYA=30 to 40), suggest the more likely scenario is that your CYA is actually much lower. In that case, you're flying blind right now without knowing your true FC target until that test kit arrives. I can't...

    Advice on testing device

Also, if you start dosing the pool like it's CYA 150 and it's actually 40, you might end up doing some real damage, especially if you attempt a SLAM. You really need to know, which means you really need to find out for yourself. It's insurance if nothing else.

    Advice on testing device

Happy to. I just recently had to clean up the mess Leslie's left me with after sinking hundreds of dollars into their worth-than-worthless-because-they're-actually-detrimental solutions to non-existent problems. I'm an engineer by trade, so inclined to follow the data and make fact-based...

Vermiculite cracking/settling along the bottom edge

Ok, here we go. The crack runs the entire length of the back wall (as well as up the "right" slope), although it's mostly straight vertical except for a couple irregular spots where the crack wasn't perfectly in the "seam" and you can see some lumpy parts that push out a couple inches into the...

Buying different house for pool - Things to check for

If you do end up with a house with a septic system, be aware that there are also minimum distance requirements between the pool and the septic equipment/field.

Buying different house for pool - Things to check for

Definitely don't underestimate HOA restrictions. My HOA bans above ground pools, as well as fences. In ground pools are allowed, and since the village requires fences around them, the HOA has to submit, but since they have no guidelines other than "fences are not allowed" it becomes a headache...

Vermiculite cracking/settling along the bottom edge

Hello all! Thank you in advance for even more free advice. I intend to pay it forward soon. Regarding vermiculite settling, I apologize for asking what I'm sure has been asked before but I can't find the right thread. My pool was installed at end of October 2020 in Chicagoland and closed...

TFP Expert Discussion - SaltWater Chlorine Generators

The light bulb turns on! Thank you! I knew that the salt level will build slowly even in a liquid-chlorinated pool, but didn't realize that's the /only/ place the chlorine ultimately goes (simplistically ignoring the various other aqueous molecules it's forming like hypochlorous acids...

TFP Expert Discussion - SaltWater Chlorine Generators

Thank you for the reply! Hmm, but what is the process that causes my liquid-chlorinated pool to lose chlorine? Does UV oxidize chloride ions, causing them to combine into chlorine gas and fly away? Whatever the mechanism, wouldn't the same thing happen to the chlorine in the exposed basin of...

Looking for SLAM insights - getting stumped - no cc's, clear water, trouble with OCLT + burning through chlorine

I love it when I see someone remember the reference! There's at least one other person out there that's messed up for the same reasons that I am! Good times indeed! I knew the song long before Tiny Tunes picked it up, but I still appreciate their cultured hijinks as well. Btw, there's...

    Tips and Tricks

I've seen folks lament every now and then that there isn't a better way to keep the vacuum hose from being wound up in the water, twisting and fighting the vacuum or even kinking up. Here's what I do: 1) Before putting the hose in the water, lay the empty coil on the ground next to the pool. 2)...

Thanks for doing the SWCG talk! I caught it after the fact on YouTube. I greatly appreciate the expertise on this site. Sorry to be a downer and bring the conversation back to business, but something you guys said on the chat really confused me. (Just when I thought I was starting to...

Looking for SLAM insights - getting stumped - no cc's, clear water, trouble with OCLT + burning through chlorine

I'll preface this with: I'm not one of the experts here, just a fellow traveler that went through a SLAM recently with some of the same concerns. It took me weeks to clear the SLAM, and I was very discouraged by the high amount of chlorine I was losing every day, combined with failing OCLTs, in...

Better way to attach solar blanket to reel for Roman.

I have a double-roman-end pool as well, and have wondered the same thing. I'm new to the game, so I've stayed very conservative right now and just left the solar cover rectangular. I've been too gun-shy to cut it to match the shape of the pool until I see what works for fear of over-trimming...

Mysterious chlorine loss... SLAM even though not failing entrance criteria?

Checking in: 1 week later and the pool is still crystal clear! Been following FC/CYA recommendations and testing daily. I also removed the Nature2 Express mineralizer. I needed to take my water in to the PB to get checked monthly to maintain my warranty, so just for fun, here are their test...

Skimmer baskets! Have you ever been frustrated by bugs and debris that collect in the skimmer baskets and just won't come out, so you end up banging it on the ground, swiping the nastiness with your hand, or resorting to a hose to try to clean the basket to get it out? There is a better way...

That the Weir door is easy to disassemble for cleaning! During SLAMs, the experts always remind folks to clean the wet niche behind lights (no really, bite the bullet and just do this! You'll be surprised both at how easy it is to actually do, and how much algae has collected back there!) as...
