    Skimmer not flowing, bad valve?

Well, it turns out that it was a very minor issue and I share it to hopefully keep someone from making the same simple mistake. As I mentioned, I was doing this for a neighbor and I just today discovered that the bottom base of their skimmer bowl has 2 pipes. One goes to the pump, and one...

    Skimmer not flowing, bad valve?

Yesterday, before I started adding DE, I put in a new pressure gauge. Not sure what pressure was before then, but system worked fine before these changes. If I turn the seemingly dead skimmer valve off and on then the pressure changes, and seems to add more bubbles to the system. When I added...

    Skimmer not flowing, bad valve?

They are the cheap valves. I have backwashed multiple times. Filter runs at 9 or 10 psi after backwash.

    Skimmer not flowing, bad valve?

I have been working on a neighbor's pool for the last 9 days SLAMming the algae problem. My trouble now is that the skimmer basket is no longer moving water, and there is air in the pump basket and through the exit jets. Both suction side valves are old and I have used the skimmer valve several...

    Floating a Puck or 2

If he can add some during the week you should be in good shape. If he could prime and run the pump for a day that would be even better. Maybe you could walk him through it by phone. All of that is good motivation to get it running correctly. I hope it goes well for you.

High CYA AND SLAM Target 45

6:00 am day 2 and the water definitely looks better. It was hard to see change yesterday but it is lighter now. FC 40, added 249 oz CC .5

High CYA AND SLAM Target 45

Thanks. I had hoped to replace more. The pump quit sending water to waste. I was in my driveway and heard it sucking air through the skimmer valve even though I had closed it. My guess is that in the future we will need to replace water again to work on lowering CYA long term. But, they will...

High CYA AND SLAM Target 45

Helping an elderly neighbor couple with their pool. Their pool guy was just fired because he couldn't get the pool clear after about 3 months of problems. He had been using chlorine pucks for years so the CYA is very high. He also added a bunch of stuff, copper algaecide, as a final attempt to...

If I had it to do again I'd grout if it matched up pretty well.

Inground Total Redo - Going For Broke!

Sometimes the idiots you hire can only handle so much yelling at them. We were glad things weren't worse. I think somewhere on here I said if you're having this much done to your pool then you need to be available to watch nearly everything they are doing. If I had paid 30% higher then MAYBE it...

Inground Total Redo - Going For Broke!

We used polymeric sand everywhere. I really like it but I don't think it was properly applied. The guys didn't water and cure it according to the instructions. When it rained it would run off into the pool. So, we grouted the outside vertical edges of the coping and a little under the overhang...

Hayward Vari-flo filter valve cover cracked

I did find a replacement for $20. Leisure time pools in OK has some on their website. Shipping was fair too.

    Pumping to solar panels

All good. No more bubbles. I disconnected the in and out of the pump and aligned the whole thing a little better. The o ring seals tightened down well and it took care of the problem. I hadn't permanently mounted the pump so it was easy. Once those are done correctly there isn't much reason to...

    Pumping to solar panels

Great idea. Sort of like the soapy water test for natural gas connections, etc. The switch does work correctly now. It was a simple fix. I'm surprised the manual doesn't say anything about it. The only thing it points out is grounding and bonding.

    Pumping to solar panels

I put a small amount of lube on the lid gasket. Maybe more would help. I did tighten the plugs a quarter turn. I'll let it run longer in the morning and see.

Hayward Vari-flo filter valve cover cracked

Just under the decal that indicates where the handle is set I have a small hairline crack. I searched online but can only find the "key cover and handle assembly." I was hoping to find just the cover. I don't need the handle, spring, base plate, etc. The one I have now is black, SP-710X62...

    Pumping to solar panels

Awesome. Actually just went out and opened it up and pulled on the black wire. It was tucked into the housing but it came right out and has a cap on it. I'll join the two together. I ran it a little bit earlier and it seemed to send out quite a significant amount of air bubbles through the...

    Pumping to solar panels

The back of the switch has 3 spade terminals that are all taken up. I'm pretty sure there are three. I can pull the black wire but I don't know where to put it. Thanks for your patience.

    Pumping to solar panels

I went ahead and purchased the Pentair Superflo 1.5hp 2 speed. It arrived yesterday and I installed it today. Seemed easy enough but for some reason the switch for changing the speed does not change the speed. I read through some other articles and found this prior post which looked very...

    Pumping to solar panels

I like the idea of 2 speed. In the winter, with less debris and no solar, I can see myself using it a lot. Our rates are pretty reasonable here. I have seen many question the economy of variable speed pumps as they are pretty expensive. The one I'm looking at isn't too much more than what it...

    Pumping to solar panels

I spent some time researching my options online and by phone. The RS 1000 is basically the Hayward Super II, named RS1000 by Leslie's, where I bought it. Calling around to find a replacement motor from online sellers and saying I have an RS1000 was sort of a pain. The next call I just said I...

    Pumping to solar panels

I would probably do as jblizzle - use the lower speed when not running solar. Honestly, I'm not overly concerned with the lower pressure of the return water after it has gone through the panels. It is less than when it doesn't go through the panels, but that seems understandable. I'm glad to...

    Pumping to solar panels

Thanks for checking back. No, I didn't install drain valves. We don't get too many freezing temp days and when we do I run the pump and solar to keep things moving. With solar on, the flow in the pool is ok, just not great. Since I'm replacing, then I'd like for both to be great. It's an old...

    Pumping to solar panels

My Hayward RS1000 1.5HP pump started leaking from the seal and then the noise grew to a constant high pitch. I pulled the motor with the plan to replace the bearings and seals and couldn't get it totally apart. One small screw that holds the plate covering the front bearing is rusted and would...

Inground Total Redo - Going For Broke!

The last couple of weeks have been pretty crazy finishing things up. This has been a lot of work no doubt. A good bit was my own fault as I wanted to do some of the projects myself. First, I put tons of time into testing the new water and brushing the plaster. Brushed 2x a day for the first...
