    Pool as life-saving shelter ...

I live in Santa Rosa, and just returned from a mandatory evacuation of my neighborhood. I feel very lucky that the fire never got to my neighborhood, it was about 2.5 miles away. Many others I know were not so lucky :-(

is clorox performance bleach the same as clorox regular?

"We do not recommend you use the performance bleach in the pool." Sheesh, I thought this was cleared up a few months ago. I can report that I have used a few jugs of the Performance Bleach, and I cannot detect any difference from Regular Bleach.

Starite/Pentair VS pump priming not right-just an annoyance I can't cure

I think I have the same VS pump as the OP. It behaves exactly the same way. I messed with the settings a little to no effect. I decided not to bother about it, every day when the pump comes on, it spends a few seconds at 1800, then ramps up to the max RPM for priming (for no reason since the...

    Pool filter replacement

Yes, I have a variable speed pump. I run it at 1200 RPM for normal filtering. When priming, the pump goes to its max speed, which I think is 3450 RPM. What I should have said is that when running the pump at full speed, which is 3450 RPM, I get 16 PSI. The gauge reading is not meaningful...

    Pool filter replacement

I have a system 3; when my pump is at normal filtration speed, the gauge barely moves. When the pump is at its max speed for priming, I get about 16 psi when the filter is clean. It depends on the rest of your system, pipes, etc. My only complaint with the system 3 is that it takes me a long...

is clorox performance bleach the same as clorox regular?

Yes, that is amusing. Perhaps since Costco has a high turnover of bleach, they can claim that extra 0.05%, since as we here all know, bleach degrades with time.

is clorox performance bleach the same as clorox regular?

Just got this from Clorox: "Thank you for remaining in contact with our team. We truly apologize for the delay in our response time. After reaching out to our team members, we would like to confirm that Clorox Performance bleach is the exact same formula as our Clorox Regular Concentrated Bleach."

is clorox performance bleach the same as clorox regular?

I bought some of this Performance Bleach today at Costco -- I'm used to getting my bleach there and I did not notice at the time that it was not labelled "Regular". I'm looking here at bottles of the old "Regular" and the new "Performance". The only difference I see on the labels is that...

Auto-cover/Safety Cover Longevity, esp. UV Protection

Re: Auto-cover Longevity, esp. UV Protection I asked the technicians who installed mine (an aquamatic) what they recommend. For cleaning, they said to mix some dish soap in a 5 gallon bucket, throw that on the cover, and mop it around with a towel wrapped around a regular pool brush. Then...

Longest streak for keeping pool water in balance

I've never had to SLAM (pool was built in 2011). I've done TFPC since the start. I don't close the pool for the winter, and I try to use rain water to keep the CH under control (the California drought is making this a bit difficult). Thanks TFP for showing me how to do it!

Solar Panel Leak -- Call Contractor, or DIY?

The Heliocol website has a dealer locator you can use. I have used my local dealer for a repair, and I found them to be quite reasonable. My opinion is, if you don't feel comfortable getting up on the roof for a repair, then hire the job out to a pro. But, I'm sure that you could do it safely...

    Submersible Pool Cover Pump

Understood. I'm on my second Rule pump, the first one having died after about 3 years. I'll be watching this thread, because I'm sure I'll need something in a year or two, and the Rule may not be available then.

Sta rite system 3 using 3 filters?

Elaborating on that a bit, the main complaints about the Sta-Rite System 3 cartridge filters seem to be: 1. Lot's of fussing around with 7 or 8 knobs to get the top tank on and off. 2. Heavy big cartridge. 3. Hard to clean inside of small cartridge. 4. Expensive to replace cartridges. My...

Sta rite system 3 using 3 filters?

Filter leaks a tiny amount at high RPM [SOLVED]

I cleaned and lubed the o-ring with Magic Lube ii. It seems to have fixed the problem - no drips even when the pump goes to its highest RPM. I'll check tomorrow, I put some cups underneath to catch any drips, but I think I got it. Thanks for the help.

Filter leaks a tiny amount at high RPM [SOLVED]

Re: Filter leaks a tiny amount at high RPM System 3's have either 7 or 8 knobs; mine has 7. It is a pain because it takes a long time to operate all those 7 knobs when servicing. I personally don't mind how heavy the big cartridge is, I can handle it easy enough. I would prefer cheaper...

Filter leaks a tiny amount at high RPM [SOLVED]

See my sig for equipment. The filter is a Sta-Rite System 3. I cleaned my cartridges 2 weeks ago, and thought all was fine, but I just noticed that at high RPM, I get about 3 drips. When my system turns on, for some reason my variable speed pump always senses that it needs to prime itself (it...

    Auto Cover Lid Options?

My pool builder made our lids out of concrete that matches the deck. It looks very good. I can tell you that these things are heavy, and that somewhat discourages me from cleaning out the cover vault as often as I should, since I hate lifting those things. But, I still think I prefer this...

do i need a new set of cartridge filters?

I also have a Sta-Rite System 3 cartridge filter, and I have looked around a bit for aftermarket replacement cartridges. I don't think there are any, you have to bite the bullet and get the OEM cartridges ($$$). If you google "Sta-Rite System 3 retrofit", you will see that someone makes a...

    Water sample: Weight vs. Volume

Yes, if you want to up your game a notch, I don't see why you wouldn't do that. You have demonstrated that your scale is more accurate than your vial, so use your scale to calibrate the vial.....

    Water sample: Weight vs. Volume

I have two vials in my test kit, and I filled them to the 10 mL mark (bottom of meniscus) and weighed them on an electronic scale like you did. One came out to 9.9 grams, the other came out to 10.9 grams. My guess is that +/-10% accuracy is realistic for this sort of thing, and adequate for...

    muriatic acid prices ?

There's a local hardware store in my area where you can get 2 gallons of the full strength (31%) for $10, outside by the plants. In the same store in the paint section, you can get a single gallon for $7.25. I actually buy the latter, because I don't use much MA these days, maybe a gallon...

    Adding MA safely

I noticed your pool was about the same volume as mine, yet I know it takes less than half that amount to lower my pH by 0.1; I was very perplexed, messing around with PoolMath, then aha! You must have borates in your pool. Anyway, I'm one of those who just "eyeballs" it and pours directly from...

Talk me off the ledge, or push me: filter edition

I did notice one other thread where someone had a mislabeled Sta-Rite. Maybe it's a common problem? I'm pretty sure the top of a System 3 would have no chance of connecting to a System 2 bottom. Anyway, good luck selecting a new filter. I hope you will keep us updated how it works out for...

Talk me off the ledge, or push me: filter edition

Your signature says you have a Sta-Rite PLM-150, which I think is a System 2 not System 3? The System 3 parts begin with "SM" not "PLM". I guess it doesn't matter, since you are replacing it. For the record, I have a 3 year old System 3 which has not given me any trouble to speak of, although...

    Sta-Rite System 3 issues.

In my System 3 cartridge system, there are o-rings where the cartridges seat against the output ports (if that's the right way to say it). Once, one of those o-rings got mangled, very easy to replace. That's a potential spot for debris to bypass the cartridges.

Added VRV to solar, now hear some water hammer

My controller does set the RPM higher when the solar comes on. I think that "bang" you mention may be what I'm hearing. With a couple "echos" perhaps, that make the flapper do a couple flaps. I think this does only happen when the solar goes on and off a couple times in a relatively short...

Added VRV to solar, now hear some water hammer

How about when the solar shuts off but the pump is still on? My pumps runs faster with the solar on, but it still runs at a lower RPM when the solar turns off. That's when I see the flapper open. Anyway, thanks for your answers. It sounds like everything is okay, I just get a little...
