    Purple

This morning, my husband opened our Aquabot Turbo, removed the filter, and noticed a dark purple liquid pooling in the bottom of the unit. It wasn't viscous, and washed away easily. He cleaned everything and put it away. Our concrete pool tends to run basic, so after checking the pH, he added...

    Charlotte/Gastonia/Matthews NC recommendation please

I have a 11,000 gallon, gunnite inground pool, and need a new pump installed. Possibly a bit of easy replumbing as well. Can anyone recommend a good pool service and repair company in the Charlotte/Gastonia/Matthews area? I don't care if it's a one man team, or a large company. I need a service...

    Pump recommendations

Our repair guy is suggesting that we replace the entire pump because ours is discontinued and replacement parts are at a premium. This sounds logical, but we have been jerked around by various pool service people over the past few years. So, I'm a bit cautious.

Thank you. Our repair person should be coming by this week, and I will reinforce that.

Thanks very much to both of you - I honestly never considered just replacing the motor. And a two speed would certainly serve our pool's needs very well.

I should mention - we haven't used the spa in years, and keeping our electricity bill down is more important these days. Also, keeping the cost of the pump down is important as well. Sorry, I should have put that in the original post.

I posted a similar question at the Pool Forum, but I'm not sure if there's significant traffic there at this time. So, I'd like to ask here as well. We may need to replace our old 2 hp pump. We have an 11,000 gallon gunnite pool, with a raised spa/waterfall. Our filter is a Purex Triton FNSP...

    Pool problems and worms...

Dave, I'm sure you're correct about the worms. And, thanks for the heads up about the check valve. Thankfully, the one we have now (installed by Mr.Worm) is more amenable to cleaning. Caroline

    Pool problems and worms...

I'll be glad to post a picture, probably tomorrow. Regarding the worms - that's still a mystery. I did ask our new repairman if he noticed any when he started the pump up for the first time. He said he did notice a couple in the pump basket, but certainly nothing more than that. We did talk...

    Pool problems and worms...

Thanks, Dave. I agree - knowledge is power. I've always been my "own woman" as far as water chemistry goes, and now the plumbing doesn't intimidate me, either. I found that with my new pool guy, I am now able to ask relevant and intelligent questions that gave him input, and allowed me to...

    Pool problems and worms...

To give you guys an update: I am very happy with the new person who has been working on our pool. I took your advice and along with replacing the faulty plumbing, replacing the shaft seal, handling any air leaks going into the pump basket - he fixed the leaking filter as well. Do you know...

    Pool problems and worms...

I think you guys are correct. As much as I would like to get the previous repair guy to fix his mistakes, it seems like a bad idea! As if I could even get him back out here in the first place...  Now that we are hitting a cold spell, I just want to be able to use my spa again...

    Pool problems and worms...

When the impeller was replaced, the gaskets and shaft seal were not. We did have a person from the national company who built our pool over yesterday. He also happens to handle repair issues on the side, and he inspected our system. He spent a lot of time, and handled most if not all the stuff...

    Pool problems and worms...

No, I wish! Now, we are lucky if we can manage to prime it manually by adding water to the pump basket. I was just recalling past behavior of our system that, in retrospect, would indicate a worsening issue of an air leak on the suction side.

    Pool problems and worms...

Well, I do know that our repair guy opened up and cleaned out the DE filter about a month ago, but that still leaves interesting possibilities that I had not considered!

    Pool problems and worms...

No, it was me! My husband caught a bad case of pneumonia in October, and landed in the hospital for 10 days. I am the one who handles most of the pool upkeep, and needless to say, the pool was the very last thing on my list of priorities at that point. We happen to have many...

    Pool problems and worms...

I guess my line of reasoning about running the bucket test was to rule out the possibility of an underground leak - mainly because our pool repair guy is stressing the "worm factor" and underground pipe break so strongly to us. He was here today and is leaving the problem in our hands, as he is...

    Pool problems and worms...

I just checked the bucket test I set up yesterday, and I noticed a very slight difference between the two water levels - possibly a 1/16 on an inch or so. However, due to the way the pool is, the water level in the bucket was a good 6 - 8 inches from the top ( I matched the water levels inside...

    Pool problems and worms...

New2Me, thank you for the fantastic post. That is great information, and i will be sharing it with my husband tonight. The round thing with the ring around it and clear top - I think you are referring to the Nature 2 mineral disinfectant thing (it's grey) that used to hold cartridges. We don't...

    Pool problems and worms...

Greg, it doesn't make sense to me, either. They are quite large, and it would have to be a sizable hole for them to get into. Making a mental note to check the skimmer area, as I recall we have a loose spot of slate coping there. I agree that the worms aren't just appearing out of thin air. And...

    Pool problems and worms...

To be fair, the pump discharge was done by a plumber friend of my husband's - not our pool repair person. Here is the new plumbing that the repair guy put in yesterday: I just set up a 5 gallon bucket in the pool to check for water loss, and I'll have an answer from that in about 24 hours...

    Pool problems and worms...

Husband just got home, started up the pump, and again, the pump basket is half empty and the pump won't prime. So much for the redone plumbing this afternoon. I'm going to try the bucket test tomorrow, and also reread this thread to see suggestions I probably have missed. :|

    Pool problems and worms...

Dave, you are correct - there is no dirt in the system. What you say about the check valve makes sense. And, we have had many problems with the previous check valve due to leaves and such. I'm starting to wonder if our pool repair company can handle this issue. Now that it's stopped raining, I...

    Pool problems and worms...

According to my husband, there's always been a check valve in that position, and our pool guy replaced it with one that is easy to clean if need be. It's there to keep the water from flowing back into the pool, considering that our equipment is higher than the water level of the pool. As for the...

    Pool problems and worms...

Another excellent question that needs to be addressed. I'm thinking that the repair guy did not check this, so I will add it to the list after the sealant dries on the plumbing. Thanks, Caroline

    Pool problems and worms...

Hi Dave, The repair guy just got the pump running, and no, there is no noticeable leaking. However, if you look in the second photo I posted, the top right hand arrow points to a section that was loose, and he thought it may be letting air into the system after the pump was shut off. He...

    Pool problems and worms...

To be fair, the pool repair guy has spent several hours trying to diagnose the problem. As I mentioned, he did end up replacing a good amount of plumbing, all on the suction side. He will be over today to replace one more piece that is loose and may be letting in air - but it is between the pump...

    Pool problems and worms...

Our pool repair person is coming by this afternoon, so I will be able to get some additional answers. I do not know the type of pipe installed underground, as we did not build the pool. I've never noticed any worms anywhere in the pool (including when the problem first started), so I am not sure...
