I cleaned it out and its start up pressure is now 2-3 psi lower at start up than its ever been since we bought this house. The return that was low pressure is working perfect. Its suction is fantastic. I'm so glad I did this and didn't buy 200 lbs of sand and labor through that. Thanks...

So I opened my pool filter on top of the sand was this nasty gray silt residue and a ton of bugs. I haven't rinsed it out yet but want to make sure that that is normal. And that I don't need to replace anything. Thanks!

I backwash about 3 minutes. I really do it just until the glass is clear. Usually between 2-4 minutes. Then rinse for 30 sec.

Immediately after backwashing, I get decent suction on my vacuum and the returns which are pointing up are very vigorous except one return which occasional blows and doesn't blow as hard as the other two. After about 2 minutes of vaccuming which has the occasional leaf and some green gritty...

Re: Good Grief...ANOTHER LEAK?????? This time the pump itsel I've had the pool open for several weeks. How do I check/fix that? The leak gets worse everytime. I stop running it for a few days to let the wood dry out but then the pool gets nasty so I have to start all over again.

Ok, So...the plug was tightened into the pump and it doesn't feel wet anymore. BUT, water is still oozing out from beneath the pump. That is besides the leaky pvc pipe which needs to be fixed. So do I need to replace the pump???? And what in the world would cause sooo many leaks?

I was wrong, sort of...leak elsewhere Ok...I replaced the O-rings on the pvc and they are fine. But there is moisture around the elbow joints, with maybe the occasional drip. But the real problem is the plug on the hair strainer that goes to the pump. There were 2 plugs and I put them both...

Ok changed the O-rings and it didn't leak there. But there are two spots right by it that are leaking at the joints that are cemented. You can see the purple cement by it. So some sort of epoxy is out of the question? Can I just recement it?

I think they are a little out of alignment...what do I do to fix that?

Do I need to shut off valves or anything before opening them?

Re: Hayward sand filter making hissing and whistling noise! Wellllll....u guys were right. It was third valve on the right. Nothing was coming out of the return jets. I went to the pool place and he recommended putting it on recirculates so the water bypasses the filter so I don't have to worry...
