    Rust spot on plaster floor

Thanks again. Tough to get a photo since it’s about as far from the edge as you can get, but here it is. This is after a layer of pool putty a week ago.

    Rust spot on plaster floor

Thanks! It’s the “ready” part I’m unclear about — is this a “wait-until-I’m-ready” situation or is this an “immediate action required to avoid thousands of dollars more over time” situation? And if the latter, what does “over time” mean? Months? Years? Decades?

    Rust spot on plaster floor

Hey Forum, Last year I posted about a hairline crack with rust on my deep-end bench. I ended up mushing some pool putty over that spot and it has 'resolved' (hidden?) the rust. This year, another bubbling rust spot about the size of a quarter showed up smack in the middle of the shallow end...

Heating a pool in late spring -- economics and comfort

Thanks for the links and tips, all. I've spent some time trying to calculate it out and it's proving pretty challenging -- too many variables (I have a kidney pool, so surface area is not easily measured, type of solar cover, etc). However, I think the guidance here gives me a pretty good ballpark.

Where'd all my salt and calcium go??

Thanks all -- My salt came up to 2200 after brushing, but that's only a drop of reagent so effectively no change. I guess I underestimated the amount of rain we received this winter!

Heating a pool in late spring -- economics and comfort

I've got a propane heater and a solar blanket on my 33kgal pool in the Philly area. I've always shied away from bringing the water up to temp until the peak summer months (like sustained highs around 85) for fear of the heating cost, but I'm wondering if it would actually be as bad as I'm...

Where'd all my salt and calcium go??

Hey TFP -- at pool closing in the fall, I had CH of 450 and salt around 3400. This year at opening, my CH is reading 350 and the salt is down to 2000 -- is this plausible?? I have a 33k gallon pool and we didn't get a ton of rain this winter; I have a hard time believing a third of the water...

Expansion joint - bad caulk job or bad customer?

@JoyfulNoise yeah they used backing material and sand fill as far as I was aware, though I didn't micromanage the job while it was in progress so I don't know if they missed some spots. Thanks everyone -- good to hear this to be expected with a new caulk job.

Expansion joint - bad caulk job or bad customer?

I just had my expansion joint professionally re-caulked with gray sikaflex and a sand coating on top. There was one spot with a sink-hole and the crew came back to patch it. The first patch was horribly sloppy and the crew came out to re-do it. It's a bit better than it was, but it sticks out...

Makes sense, thanks for your patience to help me understand the mechanics of what’s going on!

    Deck recaulking -- how hard?

I'm looking into getting the caulk between my concrete decking and the coping redone. It doesn't *sound* like a particularly challenging/technical DIY sort of project, but I'm having a hard time getting a pulse on just how labor intensive it is (especially removal of the old stuff). Can anyone...

Crack/rust on deep end bench edge

Yeah, makes sense. I don't think a pool refinish is (comfortably) in the cards for me for at least 3-5 years. I'm hoping to do the bare minimum to prevent substantial structural damage to the pool surface in the mean time. I know @JoyfulNoise was crystal clear in his advice above but I just...

Crack/rust on deep end bench edge

I'm sorry -- one more follow up. I did actually manage to connect with a local pool renovation company who talked through the problem with me at length. The guy I spoke with quoted $300-$500ish to do the repairs suggested above (chip out, strip down to the gunite, move the rebar, hydraulic...

Makes sense. Thank you (both of you) again for the advice!

Crack/rust on deep end bench edge

I appreciate the thoughts 1poolman1. What would you suggest as a path forward then if I can't find anyway? Attempt a manual repair (I'd be moderately comfortable) do nothing for a while, or plan to shell out for a replaster this season?

Crack/rust on deep end bench edge

How about relative urgency -- I'm having a hard time finding a company who's even willing to quote it right now (busy with openings). Is this the sort of thing that can wait 'til later in the year without risking huge complications?

Crack/rust on deep end bench edge

Thanks for the quick, detailed reply! I know better than to try to cut corners, but just to be clear: patching the plaster directly (without dealing with the gunite, etc -- in an attempt to keep water/oxygen away from the rebar) is not a sufficient (albeit temporary) solution?

Crack/rust on deep end bench edge

While opening up the pool this season, I discovered a rust stain which appears to be coming from a hairline crack along the front edge of a bench/shelf in my deep end: From what I can tell online, I either need some $10 magic underwater goo, or I need to sign the deed of my house over to the...
