    DE flowing back into pump

Interesting, I hadn’t heard that. I inherited my system with the DE filter already installed. Is there a recommendation for a check valve that works well with a VSP? A quick search brought me to this one, but it says it require 5psi for water to flow. My VSP running at 1500rpm shows around 4psi...

    DE flowing back into pump

I have noticed a new gurgling sound around the MPV after installing my new VSP. I attributed it to lower water levels running at lower speed. Is that normal? It’s possible the noise was there before but I didn’t notice because the old single speed pump was so loud.

    DE flowing back into pump

I don't notice any hissing. I think I replaced the relief vale + o-rings last year.

    DE flowing back into pump

You're right, it only happens when the pump is not running. I mistakenly tried that to get the water to drain more, to test the priming. But when I open the air relief valve while the pump is running, I do get milky (DE) water shooting out the valve. That seems like a new symptom - the first...

    DE flowing back into pump

I never noticed this my first 3 years of pool ownership, but starting near the end of last season I noticed that under certain conditions, DE would flow back into the pump, or if I had to the Polaris cleaner valve open, it would flow back into the pool. I'm not sure of all of the circumstances...

    Nidec NPTT165 Questions

Yeah, I have a feeling I'm going to need to do some plumbing work. In that case, it may make sense to get an entirely new pump, since the idea of an easy motor swap out job is less likely. Any comparable VSP in that price range? I found references to a cheap CaliMar in this forum, but could not...

    Nidec NPTT165 Questions

I am also looking at this motor for the same reason (at @1poolman1 suggestion). The manual mentions a built-in relay sounds like an interesting option for switching on my SWCG - does anyone know if the flow threshold is configurable? From the manual: "The Auxiliary Load Relay automatically...

Pump makes new noise, and stops after seconds

I tested the capacitor today and it was a little low - it is rated for 30uF +- 6%, which means 28.2 on the low end. It measured at 27.98. The capacitor is dated 2015. But my symptoms now are that as soon as I turn the power on, it trips the breaker. Would a bad capacitor cause that? I actually...

Pump makes new noise, and stops after seconds

Rained on for 10 years, definitely. Spray from filter relief value, yes. Totally submerged, unlikely. Ok I put the multimeter on both lines (terminals 1 & 3) and read 240V. However, this time when I turned the switch on, I heard a muted pop, and the pump didn't come on at all, and the breaker...

Pump makes new noise, and stops after seconds

I've seen other mentions of capacitors on pool pumps, but don't see something that is obviously a capacitor. Do you see something in that photo? Do I have to disassemble further?

Pump makes new noise, and stops after seconds

I turned on my pump the other day and a few sparks shot out so I turned it off. It had been raining recently and was wet in the area. That has never been an issue before, but wanted to mention it. Left it alone for a couple days and tried it again today. First I opened the strainer and verified...

How much is too much scale build up

I'm just about to start my second season with my new SWCG. I have never cleaned it, and have read a lot of advice in this forum suggesting not to clean it too often. But I want to get a better idea of how much scale is too much before I have to do something. I'm assuming there will always be...

    SWCG Buildup

Plaster. Not sure why my signature is T showing up. Thanks for the tips. Sounds like that scaling isn’t a concern - it just looked different from when I installed.

    SWCG Buildup

I've read enough here to know that calcium can build up on a SWCG, but I'm surprised to see it already - I installed mine about 5 weeks ago. I keep my levels (mostly) within the Pool Math ideal ranges - TA is a little high (90), and pH seems to be constantly rising, so may be reaching 8 for a...

Add SWCG wiring to Intermatic timer enclosure

Built an enclosure with some scrap plywood and a 2x4. Its just resting on the back - as suggested in that other thread - the whole thing can lift right off. Because the location, it really doesn't get much straight sunlight, mostly on that left side and the top, so this should work.

    PVC rework for SWCG

Confirmed the bubbles are from the chlorine generation by powering it off. The funny thing is, I read a ton of posts on here about SWCG in preparation, and saw this same info about the bubbles posted many times. Yet as soon as I saw them, I assumed I screwed something up 😳

    PVC rework for SWCG

The flow switch is the piece that looks like a coupling on the left/up side of the upside-down U where the cell is mounted. The wire comes out on the side facing the filter, so you can't see it from this angle (you can see the wire from it along the intake pipe).

    PVC rework for SWCG

Just posting a follow up - went for a slight variation on the suggestions - up and over the intake pipe to give me enough vertical drop for the cell. Thanks for all the help! Hardest part was dealing with the piece at the ground, which was below pool water level. Didn't learn about Rain or...

Thanks all! Knocked out just like you said, and got it all wired up this weekend with a 90 degree liquid tight.

Add SWCG wiring to Intermatic timer enclosure

Great, thanks! Looks like I can get a right angle connector from Home Depot. I’m guessing the cell cord doesn’t need to be in conduit the whole way, just for the connection to the box. can I just hang it out of that connector? Or do I need some kind of stopper on the bottom where the cord goes in?
