    Weather-sealed power connectors for pumps

They're totally exposed, but if it's moisture that's causing them to lock up I suspect that will happen even if they're covered, since I assume it's more likely to be from condensation as they lag temperature changes than from water getting into the coil section from precipitation (which, if it...

    Weather-sealed power connectors for pumps

Is there something like a water-proof Amphenol-style connector for 12/2 wires to a pump? Presently my pumps are hardwired through grey flex conduit. Every spring they're locked up and I have to remove the motors to get them started. I would like to put a tail with a weather-proof plug on each...

Caulk clarification for joint above tiles

This thread says to use Dow 290 silicone caulk. This thread says to use Sikaflex 1A polyurethane caulk. Which is more correct? Or what are the characteristics that one wants in a sealant that's going to be applied right above the waterline of a salt pool? In my case, I want to seal a gap...

    Rocky's Roller hack

I have a kidney-shaped pool, so I start with a 24x40 16mil cover and cut some of it away. (I have to fold one of the lobes at the far end, which is part of why I needed extra height on the reel.) Even though it drags over some concrete, when unrolling the cover the locked wheels hold the reel...

    Rocky's Roller hack

I had a Rocky's Eazy Roller 3A solar cover reel for a few years and found its screw-in anchors to be tedious, and its height above my deck to be lower than ideal. I found a convenient and inexpensive solution to both problems: $60 got four 5" total-locking polyolefin swivel casters with 2 3/4"...

Pump worth buying for Polaris 280?

For the record: The Pentair LA01N is definitely the one to get. I just installed one today and it is so much quieter than the PB4-60 was when new I don't understand how the latter is still on the market!

In-line filter for skimmer hose vacuuming

When I open my pool, and when my automated cleaners break, I fall back on vacuuming using a 1.5" hose through a skimmer port. Which quickly clogs my pump's little prefilter. Is there a hand-vacuuming filter, roughly as coarse as the one my pump, I can put between the vacuum hose and the...

Pump worth buying for Polaris 280?

Note that at least on Amazon the Pentair LA01N is highly recommended as a replacement for the Polaris PB4-60.

Pump worth buying for Polaris 280?

When I bought a Polaris 280 five years ago it came with a Polaris Halcyon Pump. When that wouldn't start last year I replaced it with a PB4-60 pump, which was very noisy out of the box. Putting it on bushings must have allowed it to last until this year, but last week it vibrated one of the...

OK to use Fernco on pump outlet?

Is it a permanent deformation of the PVC, or is it just a loosening that requires application of thread lube and retightening?

OK to use Fernco on pump outlet?

+1 for Griffiths' find. I'm going to look for a proper union. I just got the leaking MIP-threaded PVC out of there and it turns out it's 1.5" thread with a 2" hub. And what I can't understand is why it started leaking: There are no visible cracks on either side, and the threads are still...

OK to use Fernco on pump outlet?

The 2" threaded joint leaving my Hayward SuperPump is leaking badly (suddenly, after 4 years). All PVC is glued from there to filter. The only way I can see to fix it is to cut the PVC, so I can take out the threaded fitting, check for cracks, clean, lube, and reseat. Is it acceptable to use...

How does PhosFree and other phosphate removers work?

Interested in the actual chemistry, especially because at least PhosFree claims it "is formulated from lanthanum compounds."

What if everything checks out but SWG doesn't generate chlorine?

Water temp is 80F. SWG controller is reporting 25.7V and 6.3A through the cell.

What if everything checks out but SWG doesn't generate chlorine?

This was a good idea: I always test water taken from the far end of the pool (near skimmers, away from returns). When did the OTO test on a sample straight from the return I got 5ppm! Follow-up question: if I'm losing chlorine at this rate should I add algaecide? (Note also I have had a solar...

What if everything checks out but SWG doesn't generate chlorine?

I have a Hayward Aqua-Rite with a T-15 cell in a 25,000 gallon pool. It has worked great for 3 years. This year I opened it up and it was giving me the CIL-failure, but after replacing the part the controller is indicating everything in order. The cell is perfectly clean and clear and I've...

How can too much salt affect SWGs?

I can understand how too little salt could be a problem, but how can too much salt interfere with the operation of a SWG? I have a Hayward Aqua-Rite and its manual seems very emphatic that it not be run with "high salt."

    Broken skimmer weir tab

Well I did find that Pentair sells replacement plastic tabs for this style skimmer (part #85017500). The weird thing is that nobody in their company has any idea how these should be attached to the skimmer inlet body after an original one breaks off. This tab does fit the weir, but it looks...

    Broken skimmer weir tab

There must be standards for metals to be used in saltwater pools. I've seen other weirs with exposed metal pins. I only have to buy one pin, so I can pay up for whatever alloy or metal won't need constant replacement (which run-of-the-mill stainless certainly will!).

    Broken skimmer weir tab

One complication: This is a salt-water pool. What are the specifications for metal components to stand up to that water and chemistry?

    Broken skimmer weir tab

No, the weir is fine and easy to replace (Admiral 8" #850015). The problem is the attachment point between the weir and the skimmer box: The weir hinge has holes that engage pins on the skimmer box. Apparently the pins are plastic and can just snap off and disappear. I'm realizing now I can...

Just opened my pool and discovered one of the skimmer tabs that the weir snaps onto is gone. How can I repair this?

Water level on in-ground plaster pool with mesh cover

Until this year I always pumped my in-ground down 1.5' below the tiles, put on a mesh cover, and left it until opening, at which point the winter thaw and spring rain typically have it full. This spring I replastered with SunStone and the contractor says I shouldn't leave any plaster above...

    Winterizing chemicals?

SE Pennsylvania, 25kgal in-ground salt pool with mesh cover: I'm starting to get the catalogs with winterizing chemical specials. Most of them don't even say what is in the kits. Others say they include non-chlorine shock and "other chemicals to prevent algae, and control stain and scale." I...

    Solar cover

We've had a few weeks of heavy rain, blown debris, and humidity that have kept our solar cover both on the pool and puddled with rainwater. Of course the top has grown plenty of green algae, but our SWG pool has so far kept whatever leaks in from taking hold. But even after spraying off the...

Pop Tile repair - best practices?

So isn't there a more "permanent" way to fix it? I.e., one that should last as long as the rest of the original tiles?
