Heater died, should I replace the whole thing or just the heating element?

Per post, went out one morning last week and the circuit breaker on my spa had tripped. A quick experiment of unplugging the major components revealed the heating element as the culprit. I haven't tried pulling it yet but it looks like an easy job. I was just going to replace the whole thing...

    Questions about filters

So I have filter questions. Attached is a pic of my filters, Clarathon from Spa Depot. I use an SWG to chlorinate my spa (not sure if that matters re/filters). The filters in the pic are new as of a couple of months ago. One on the right was just rinsed out, one on the left not yet...

Brown scum at water line after purge

Thanks, lots of good stuff there! I have been cleaning it out as it forms and it's decreasing a lot so that's a good sign. I also clean out the foam as it forms ... kind of a pain but seems worth doing to get the gunk out of the water. Sadly I can't do a half-fill and flush ... until the jets...

Brown scum at water line after purge

I've had my spa for 2.5 years now, on my 5th fill. Each fill seems to bring some new mystery. The first fill was kind of a mess, I found TFP and cleaned it w/ahh-some, and switched to an SWG. Have had relatively few issues since then. A couple of weeks ago it was time to purge and refill...

TA rising ... what's going on?

I didn't measure the replacement water ... never really occurred to me! And when testing, I go til the color stops changing, but didn't know you are supposed to subtract the last drop. That's not mentioned in the TF-100 instructions. Regardless, since I use the same method when I test, my TA...

TA rising ... what's going on?

I am just testing weekly. Tempted to add a little acid and see if that brings the TA and pH back down. But also feel like I'm not that far out of the desired pH range so wondering if I should let it drift a bit higher before worrying about it.

Ahh-Some Green ring after multiple purges!

I had issues w/my spa on the first fill and tried ahh-some. First go round there was a ton of gunk. Second much less. Third time almost none. I'm thinking your tub was just really nasty ... at some point the amount of gunk should start decreasing, to nothing.

Filter - clean or replace, and how often?

Right. Never been clear what is considered heavy bather load ... I use my spa almost every day, anywhere from 15 to 30 minute soak. Occasionally I'm joined by a friend or one of my kids. Is that heavy?

TA rising ... what's going on?

Don't use soap at all, even when doing a refill ... just a mild bleach solution to wipe down the shell. I've used a lot of pH decreaser on previous fills and it doesn't seem to last at all .. w/in a day the pH is right back up. Based on what I've read it sounds like I should lower TA instead, no?

TA rising ... what's going on?

I've had my spa for two years now and have consistently struggled w/keeping the pH in the recommended range ... with a new fill it will be around 7.6, but over time it drifts up and stabilizes around 8-8.2. This is actually perfectly comfortable to soak in, but as I understand it not great for...

Filter - clean or replace, and how often?

Thanks guys, good info ... seems I tossed my filters too soon then as they were not fuzzy at all, just discolored. Definitely hadn't noticed any difference in the water flow thru them. Oh well. Good to know re/cleaning ... monthly seemed excessive. I am on a 6-month schedule w/my refills as...

Filter - clean or replace, and how often?

Nearly three years into spa ownership now, curious what kind of cleaning/replacing schedule other people have for their filters. My neighbor swears by Eco Soak filter cleaner but I'm not impressed ... the filters don't look visibly cleaner after a treatment so I'm not convinced it's doing much...

Water balance ... recommended levels here vs. from SmarterSpa

This is a Vita Spa. No idea what it's made of but I don't think it's fiberglass. How would I find out? Oh, wait, I see in the brochure it says acrylic ... so that would be plastic right?

Water balance ... recommended levels here vs. from SmarterSpa

I did notice the date and was wondering about that ... but I'm also wondering about the recommendations from TFP since they are for pools. I'm going to stick w/200 CH for now ... that's what I've been doing and it seems to be working. Maybe I'll go for a lower TA since I have a lot of trouble...

Water balance ... recommended levels here vs. from SmarterSpa

Now I'm more confused ... the post that is pinned to the top of this section of the forum recommends CH of 150! Looking at the recommendations for my spa, the booklet lists "dissolved solids" at 100-200ppm. I assume that is CH since all the other recommendations are identifiable as something...

Water balance ... recommended levels here vs. from SmarterSpa

So I just did a dump-and-refill of my spa (used ahh-some to clean it out - love that stuff!) and now I'm rebalancing the water. I have followed the recommendations for a chlorine spa posted here, but I actually use the SWG system from Control-o-matic, SmarterSpa. Their recommendations are...

    Alkalinity and pH issues

So I am following your advice and working on getting the pH down ... it does seem to be dropping, it's holding under 8 (from 7.6-7.8) but does still want to creep up. Is the 7.6-7.8 range good enough, or should I try to get it to be stable at 7.6?

    Alkalinity and pH issues

I don't have a circ pump so the spa uses one set of jets to circulate the water. The aerators on that are always off when I get out. The manual actually suggested leaving the aerator on the other set on. This set is run automatically, periodically, to keep the pumps primed or something. I...

    Alkalinity and pH issues

For some reason I stopped getting notifications of replies so I missed this. Yes, this makes total sense. Thanks for the explanation! I have been frustrated trying to lower my pH because it has been so stubbornly high. Do I just need to keep banging away at it - will it eventually come down...

    Alkalinity and pH issues

Argh. So many different recommendations. The how to at the top of the spa forum suggests a TA of 50. The folks at SmarterSpa suggest 100. Now you are saying it doesn't matter. How is a person supposed to know what to do?

    Alkalinity and pH issues

My tap water has a TA of 30-40. It would make sense to me that as the H2O evaporate is would leave the solids behind and then as I add more tap water the TA would rise. Yes or no? Re just managing pH, I've struggled w/this as it has been stubbornly high (8 and higher) and I didn't want to add...

    Alkalinity and pH issues

Just tried again but didn't realize about the not squeezing .... did wipe the tip each time and the drops looked bigger than before. Got a reading of a solid 90. I feel like my numbers are pretty good now - added 2 tbsp of pH decreaser yesterday (1 at a time, giving it multiple hours to...

Re/the test, I confess I haven't followed the direction of wiping the dropper. I will try the test again doing this. And no, I haven't added any stabilizer.

    Alkalinity and pH issues

I do add water, about once a month ... the tub seems to loose about an inch a month. I hadn't thought of that but that would change the chemistry over time wouldn't it? I have tried adding a little bit of pH down but not much ... it didn't seem to have a lasting effect, and since I thought the...

    Alkalinity and pH issues

Back at the beginning of November 2019 I filled my spa and tested the TA at 40 so I didn't mess w/it. I brought the hardness up to 175 and I have an SWG for chlorine generation so I didn't do anything for FC. I have had ongoing issues w/high pH - started at 8 and has been creeping up to where...
