Thanks to both of you. I'll be picking up some DE later today. My local Leslie's store has a $25 box for $25 which beats the price I can get at our local Lowes and our Home Depot doesn't have it in stock.

I'm in the process of a SLAM and making progress. Where does one buy DE to help the sand filter get rid of the cloudiness? Is this something a local pool store will sell?

I wonder if you could get some 2" PVC pipe and end caps and put a bit of cement in the bottom of the cap, then when inverted and used as a cover, the weight of the cement would keep them from blowing off.

Sounds like the contractor is just trying to make more money. Would take a long time to offset the $7,000 to modify the pool now as opposed to the cost of chemicals and heating associated with the existing pool.

You can purchase a straight pipe that goes in place of the cell. On Hayward's site they call it pipe-Straight Placeholder,Turb ITEM # GLX-CELL-PIPE and I see it listed on a poolpartsonline for around $32.

The plywood will degrade with time and exposure - are you ready to tear it down and start over when that happens?

Try putting on a pair of leather gloves and give it another try - I find that helps get a better grip and ability to loosen that type of fitting.

Be sure to also check the hardness. My well water terrible and at some point soon I plan to dump and start over with water from our city line.
