Mesh safety cover won't allow people to fall through and keep will keep debris out, but water will still go in. You'll still need to vacuum and clean opening.

Is it a small drip? I'd leave it if it is. Looks like there's not enough pipe left over once you cut the joints out. You'll end up removing whole sections. You should have at least 3/4 inch or pipe in the connector.

It could be the filter clogging up, hence the question about the pool pressure. We need to know the pressure to give a more accurate answer. Higher pressure lower flow, all things considered.

Bearing replacement or motor replacement, also a new shaft seal. Easy fix relatively. A couple hundred dollars only. No need to replace the whole pump.
