Have you actually seen a pump with a union screwed into it? Maybe I should post a photo. The union O-ring is working just fine. That's not where the leak was.

The solution was simple. Remove the filter from the system entirely, turn it on its side, seat an O-ring, turn it over, and seat the other O-ring. Then reinstall the filter. It turns out the rings will stay in place without grease.

I will see if I can do that. It's very hard to get any room to work because I did the pipes first.
