    New DIY Pool (questions)

The pump port size 1-1/2" just means you'll need a 1-1/2" --> 2" adapter to use it with 2" pipe. The pump connection size can usually be considered the minimum pipe size for that pump, but bigger (within reason) usually isn't a problem.

Chlorinator percentage mystery: 5% change drops FC rapidly

Re: Chlorinator percentage mystery: 5% change drops FC rapid That's interesting because I have the same setup with similar experience. I was running fine at 60% during the summer, 4-8ppm chlorine at 80+ degrees and lots of usage. Recently when it got colder and pool wasn't used I dropped it to...

    switching pump and filter maybe

There's no reason you couldn't use the 1HP pump with your current cartridge filter if you wanted to keep it. Sand or cartridge is more of a preference than one-is-better thing. If the equipment is in good condition then $150 sounds reasonable.

    Help! Pool turned green overnight

What is the pH? Chlorine can't prevent algae if the pH is out of range.

Attn: East Coasters in Irene's path

I live about 40 miles from the coast. Thankfully, I did the sensible thing and covered the pool. It has a carpet of leaves on the cover. The wind finally stopped a few hours ago. Cover comes off tomorrow!

    Vinyl Inground Estimate-SE Pennsylvania

It's possible that it COULD be done in 2 weeks, but I would strongly doubt it. It took us longer than that just to get the permit approval from the town. My advice would be take your time and get it done right, not fast. You'll have years to enjoy it. You might want a couple more returns, one...

    New pool leaking

The bucket test isn't accurate to laboratory standards. If there's a wind, the sides of the bucket will protect the water inside it, meaning less water evaporates. Water in the bucket might also cool faster than the pool since the pool has a constant supply of warmer water rising from the...

    Backfill question

That stuff looks to have a void ratio of 30-40%. Are you going to use a polyester landscape fabric to prevent soil migration? What about water issues with your steel wall pool?

    Backfill question

Is the road base product primarily crushed concrete? That's what I ended up using to backfill. It was $9.75/ton for 50 tons, which was about half the cost of anything else. It consists of a mix of particles from about 1" down to fine grains. It's very heavy and dense, making it almost perfect...

I would say, simply, stay out of the pool stores. No good will come of it. :goodjob:

Replacing pump, but not enough PVC plumbing!

You'll never get a solvent welded PVC joint apart. The best you can do is cut it and get a fitting that goes inside the piece of 2" pipe still inside the valve. I forget what they're called but someone here will know.

Still Evaluating PB Proposals; Have Questions

    1. Probably means the returns are looped to provide even flow from all. Nice but not essential. 2. 1.5hp is probably way too much for a 12k gal pool unless it's a 2-speed. PB#1 is offering more value in equipment. 3. ColorLogic is newer LED tech, 100W 12V light is weak. PB#1 wins again. 4. If...

    Pool leak please help!!!

Look at the pipe (or hose) where the dirty water comes out when you put the filter in Backwash to clean it. Is there any water there when pumping normally? If there is, even a trickle, then the gasket inside the filter is leaking and causing your water loss.

    Question during the planning stage

If you really wanted to convert to tile, you'd have to excavate the poolcrete bottom then physically tie the new concrete floor into the walls, probably by drilling in rebar every 8-12" at the bottom of the existing wall. The fiberglass steps would have to go and anything else added would have...

    Clear cement for Electrical Conduit?

Thanks for the replies. It does appear that clear cement is common and no wonder they would use it since much of the electrical work is exposed, on the sides of houses, etc. I just looked at one of the pieces I cut out and the joint with clear cement is solid as can be. Now I'm thinking he just...

    Clear cement for Electrical Conduit?

Is there a clear cement that's for use on gray pvc electrical conduit? I've only ever used the gray cement. My electrician used a clear cement and now I'm a little (lot) worried about leaks. I checked the conduits for leaks after the pool was filled but never pressure tested them. I didn't think...

local pool places testing is useless.

I was in the pool store on Saturday to get a junction box for my lights. While I waited for the parts guy I watched as the girl there was helping all the weekend customers getting their water tested. She dipped a test strip in their bottle of water then gave out advice for what they needed to...

    Big spillway

I was a little worried about a 2 HP pump handling the 8 deck jets I was installing. I did the calculations and knew it should work fine but still had doubts. When I first turned them on I was shocked to see all 8 shoot over 20' in the air at once when given the full flow of the pump. It moves a...

    Is My Liner Installed Right

I just built my pool and I know my measurements are perfect, yet one wall seam in the shallow end lies slightly above the floor and then on the other side the seam is slightly on the floor. The seams were perfectly in the joints while the vacuum was on while the pool was filling. It was only...

How long to wait before pavers?

Better safe than sorry, as they say. I'd agree you're on the right track for 3 months for slab or else Spring. A few months wait is better than years of maybe living with something you'll kick yourself over time and again. I backfilled with RCA and still giving it a month to settle before...

Need fence advice for keeping trespassers out

I would have a few motion sensors and a few lights wired together so that any movement lights up the entire backyard. Actually, I don't need that since I have an Alaskan Shepherd that lights up when any movement is detected :)

I don't want to be under construction but...

The skimmer on my old AG was almost that bad. I used an entire industrial size JB Weld (comes in the box, not the blister pack) and ended up resurfacing almost the entire inside. It held that way for a year and a half and was still holding when I ripped out the pool. Looks like you need a new...

Backfill for Radiant Metric GT Pool

The collar gives the pool a foundation. When the ground goes through freeze/thaw cycles, it will push on different parts of the pool in different ways depending on water content of the soil, shade/sun exposure, etc. Over time that movement will cause the walls to become uneven. The collar ties...

Backfill for Radiant Metric GT Pool

Michigan gets a few freezes I bet? I would do the collar. 2.5 yards of concrete delivered should be maybe $500. Get a wet mix, chute it to one spot and it'll almost flow itself around the pool. Just have one person helping it along on each side with a shovel. Under an hour's work and $500 for...

DIY pool kit question - opinions welcomed

I'm just finishing up my DIY build. I did everything except the electric, and that would have been easy in comparison to the rest. No, it isn't all that complicated. It is a massive undertaking in the amount of work involved, though. Yes, you can get a larger pool with the incremental amount of...

    Excavation question

If you haven't ordered the liner yet, then you can do whatever you want then order the liner to fit. If your liner came with your kit then you'll have to stick to the dig sheet that came with the kit. The dig sheet shows the finished dimensions, which are the dimensions of the liner. For...

    Excavation question

Panel shelf and the bottom of the shallow area are excavated at the same depth. Concrete/whatever gets put in on top of that so your walls are covered on the inside to the depth of the floor.
