I'm looking to replace my sand filter with a cartridge filter

I have to go by memory here because my pool is still covered until about Memorial Day. I do remember shocking the pool last season and even doing an overnight test. However, I suppose that the bacteria may still have been suspended and needed time to settle out of the water. This sediment...

I'm looking to replace my sand filter with a cartridge filter

Thanks for the thoughts Newdude. I started using a filter sock last year and I think that it would help you with your floating particles. I am not troubled with trees but, in the spring, my pool does seem to catch a lot of pollen. A real lot. But I use it all summer though. The brand I use is...

I'm looking to replace my sand filter with a cartridge filter

Possibly off topic but hopefully helpful...I notice that you are running a 1.5hp single speed pump. Please consider a 2 speed or a variable speed pump. That 1 1/2 hp is expensive to operate! I have a two speed and I only use the 1 1/2 setting when I vacuum otherwise I run it on 0.19 hp. You may...

I'm looking to replace my sand filter with a cartridge filter

My pool is near 19,000 gallons and I currently have a 2 speed Pentair 347992 Optiflo pump. It's 1 1/2 HP on high and 0.19 on low. My pool is above ground. In the fall, I remove the sand from the filter to remove the stand pipe. I do this because once, despite draining the sand filter, the sand...

    What is SLAM?

The video is helpful in that it tells you to adjust your PH to 7.2 and then it tells you to use your test kit to maintain shock levels but the video doesn't tell you what level that is. I guess it gets fine tuned against the CYA levels but still. (Just an FYI). Thanks for all you do.

Should I replace my 1 1/2 HP pump?

Should I replace my 1 1/2 HP pump?

mas985, thank you for telling me about some models that can be a good option for me. It sounds like either one is an improvement. The pump I have now is probably better known by another brand to those who know but I only know it as a Doughboy XP-1. Although I would economically prefer the lower...

mas985, do you have a pump in mind for me?

Should I replace my 1 1/2 HP pump?

This is more challenging than I expected. According to Hayward..."Circulating 7,000 gallons with a PowerFlo Matrix model # SP15932S would take about 113 minutes at high speed and about 9-3/4 hours at low speed, depending on the filter paired with it. The pump motor is rates at 1.265 kW/h at high...

Should I replace my 1 1/2 HP pump?

I did find these two pumps. A Hayward SP15932TL with 1 1/2 hp, 12 amp and 3 amp. A Pentair 347992 with 1 1/2 hp, 16.4 and 4.4 amps. Running 3 amps would run me $29 per month.

Should I replace my 1 1/2 HP pump?

Oly, good questions. I do have an inexpensive fountain that the kids like ($35). I don't have a pump driven floor cleaner. I have one skimmer. I don't have, or plan to get, any heating system. All good points. I don't understand the no, 1 and no part of your answer though. Thanks.

Should I replace my 1 1/2 HP pump?

Although the dealer hooked me up with a 1 1/2 HP pump do I need to stay with that? Should I get a 1 HP two speed/variable speed?

Should I replace my 1 1/2 HP pump?

Thank you both for your replies. For chlorination I am using liquid chlorine. My cyanuric acid level and hard water pretty much prevent me from using any tablets that I have found but if I could I would, I just seem to get better results with them.

Should I replace my 1 1/2 HP pump?

Hello! I have a Doughboy 18' x 33' swimming pool with a deep end holding about 17,000 gallons, I guess, and I have a 20" sand filter with...you guessed it a 1 1/2 HP single stage motor. I also have replaced the flexible tubing with pvc and have installed a second return port on the opposite end...

    pH and Alkalinity ??

How to chlorinate your pool reads "Eventually the CYA level will build up to a point that renders your chlorine ineffective." I am frequently adding HTH Stabilizer (CYA), since my Taylor test kit is telling me my CYA is low. So, is it okay to continue using Trichlor? I thought I was taking care...

    pH and Alkalinity ??

Thank you for your answer. What do you recommend for daily chlorine maintenance? Do you recommend Sodium Bicarbonate for raising alkalinity? Do you recommend Sodium Carbonate for raising PH?

    pH and Alkalinity ??

Moved from here. I hope I'm on topic here...My question does pertain to Alkalinity and PH for a swimming pool. Is it best to adjust low PH first since the sodium carbonate also raises the alkalinity? Then test the alkalinity and if needed raise it using sodium bicarbonate since that has very...

Sand vs sand and gravel in sand filter

Since you are probably not reading my other thread I too had a cracked stand pipe and I used J-B Weld Water Weld and it worked well so far. It's been on there about a week. They also make a Marine Weld which I can't comment on. Good luck.

Sand vs sand and gravel in sand filter

Since also have sand in the bottom of my pool I am posing the question, how are you going to get it out? I'm concerned that the "pump to waste" setting on my valve head would still move the sand through my pump which, I would think, would be bad for it. Thanks!

    sand filter problem?

Thank you so much Kieth, I do have algae. Are slamming and shocking the same thing? What do you think about the pressure gauge going from 18 psi to 21 and the flow of the filtered water stopping? Do you think this 3 lb range is possible? Maybe the pressure gauge is off?

    sand filter problem?

Okay, I have a one year old Doughboy pool it measures 18' x 34' and has a deep end. I guess it is near 17,000 gallons. Last year it had flexible 1 1/4" pipe and the 20" sand filter holding 150 pounds of sand ran at 12 psi after backwashing. At 18 psi I backwashed it for a couple of minutes until...

Sizing a Sand Filter for my Pool

Hi Dave. I have looked at the pump, in the manual for the pump and online. I have found nothing that references the pumps service factor, only that it's hp is 1.5. Sorry about that.

Sizing a Sand Filter for my Pool

Hi. I'm trying to size a sand filter for my 18x34 oval pool with a deep end holding about 19,000 gallons. I thought cycling the water every 8 hours would be enough although I am new. I get the first part of your equation, for me, 19,000 gallons divide by 8 divide by 60 equals 39.5 gallons per...
